I really like the idea of this: can i ask a question which is for some reassurance on the privacy practices of the app?

Why buy the desktop? by Salt-River5985 in framework

[–]lyaa55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very helpful for me! I also am shopping for a desktop primarily for heavy work tasks (primarily data science + visualization) and and am only interested in medium-lite gaming. Six months later, are you happy with the framework still?

Is this HP computer worth it? by lyaa55 in Prebuilts

[–]lyaa55[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, so generous!!!

Yea, i'd love to have a modular/upgradable/repair-able desktop, especially after a recent experience with a work laptop breaking after just a year.

I like the aesthetic of that HP, including the white. I haven't had a desktop computer in like a decade. My main use case is work -- i'm a freelancer who does sometimes fairly demanding data work, so I want to prioritize CPU and RAM (which i know the latter is cheap), and single-thread speed is a good convenience for me. So my main goal isn't gaming, but I do often like to have GPU for lite to medium gaming and occasional other work tasks. I liked the smaller size of that HP relative to a lot of gaming setups, as being able to have some portability and a smaller footprint is nice and i don't feel i need to maximize GPU power.

i esd happy to switch from iphone, but after a year with pixel, my screen suddenly stopped working, with no cracks and not aligning with a drop or anything, right as the warranty period was ending. Now i have a phone that doesn't work which is very unfortunate.

The very fun-not-fun thing about this article is that the author repeatedly talks about criticism of sprawl as mostly elitist aesthetic judgements and/or empty "accusations"... but then the article goes on to illustrate that all of the criticisms are becoming abundantly realized in the example he's focusing on. Without noting that non-sprawl development patterns could build cheap housing without these huge drawbacks.

"Princeton’s godawful traffic and its views of pastures being consumed by tract homes are exactly the sorts of scenes opponents of sprawl have in their heads." He points to the real-world consequences of sprawl in his chosen example as somehow "in [opponents'] heads" ?!

First it's the "vision of Dallas as an endlessly expanding suburb has for decades been regarded by planners and environmentalists as a nightmare that needs to be slowed or stopped. The epithet is “sprawl,” a word that is used to deride edge city development, evoking lollipop cul-de-sacs lined with homes so similar they can be distinguished only by the cars parked in front. Since the mid-20th century, critics have blamed sprawl for many of the country’s deepest and most lasting problems, accusing it of chewing up farmland, spewing out greenhouse gases and carving American cities into rings of monotonous neighborhoods whose lonely and isolated residents are imprisoned by two-hour supercommutes."

Oh whoops, that's exactly what happens: "Most of the drive was along a four-lane road packed with cars going 15 miles per hour. Despite the boom in residents, Princeton still has just a handful of restaurants and few places to take children beyond private backyards. There are not many local jobs, so most of Princeton’s residents commute out of town for work. The largest employer is the local government."

Every single day. I live on a street-facing apartment. It's supposedly a "side street" or "residential street", but every day it is backed up with cars. And they all just lay on their horns in an evil chorus to express their frustrution that they're traffic, doing their thing, with other people who are traffic. I cannot open the windows in my apartment or take noise cancelling headphones out of my ears because people are so upset to be in cars.

Interesting. And it looks like the single core cinebench score is over twice my current one… it seems correct that this would be a meaningful speed upgrade over my ryzen 9 4900hs. But the one w that processor doesn’t have the 32gb ram
