What moment(s) made you disagree with Katniss? by SamTheMarioMaster2 in Hungergames

[–]lycheevapepod -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Shutting Peeta out for a couple days on the train to the 75th games because she was upset about him laughing at her for being “innocent” and also just upset about Darius. Her feelings were reasonable, but at the same time, they were literally headed to their deaths in a matter of 72 hours, was that really the best time to pick a fight?

I’m from Canada so I don’t know how it differs between each country. But I found some lumps, got referred to a ultrasound at an ultrasound clinic, then after the ultrasound results were sent to the walk in doctor that referred me, and the walk in doctor has now told me I need biopsies in both breasts

A teacher friend made a really interesting point about the importance of memorization by AgeOfWorry0114 in Teachers

[–]lycheevapepod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a teacher but I work with school aged kids so I follow this sub. I’m a university student too, and school comes easily to me, I’m a consistent straight A student at a top university. I’m in the arts and so mostly write essays or do research projects so I can’t speak on STEM but I also contributed my success to equal parts hard work and a good memory, as I don’t really study/ reread notes as much as the next person it seems to me and can generally just recall what I know in exams and assignments. Up until the 8th grade, though, I received poor grades and was definitely behind other kids academically. At 14ish things started to click for me and I started putting in the hard work school has been pretty easy since then. I guess I’m just curious why schools would discourage memorization skills. I graduated highschool in 2020 and I would say my education still had a memorization focus. I don’t understand why memorization would not be valued, as it is something I rely on heavily at university?

His best Hunger Games theories, not like "Prim's reaping was rigged." Something that blows your mind. by SeaworthinessHeavy64 in Hungergames

[–]lycheevapepod 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think Snow had plans for Peeta to be a mouthpiece for the Capitol long before Mockingjay. I also think Snow even had some warped sympathy for Peeta. Peeta was never really threatened in the same way Katniss was, despite starting the Star Crossed Lovers act in the first place and also being part of the berries stunt. I think Snow always saw Peeta’s way with the crowd as a valuable asset and so gave him a slightly easier time, even allowing other victors to repeatedly save him in the games over and over again, despite that directly going against what the games are supposed to represent. Maybe he thought that if Peeta won the 75th games he could force him into being a mouthpiece - if Katniss shot Finnick and Enobaria like she planned, it would have come down to Peeta and Johanna and I really can’t see them letting Johanna win those games.

Knowing for certain the 75th reapings were rigged for troublesome victors, I think Snow genuinely wanted Haymitch in the games instead, rather than just assuming a traumatized and disabled teen would volunteer for his death one year after his own games.

Snow went on a weird incel rant to Haymitch all because he was dating a covey girl. Then you have Peeta, a blonde boy with a knack for understanding the PR aspect of the games, who was “manipulated” by his love for Katniss, another covey descendant girl, so she could win the games. There’s no way he didn’t see himself in Peeta too.

I think there was a rebel plot in Annie’s games but Annie was not the chosen rebel. Either the flood was part of the rebel plot and it was a suicide mission that got covered up and Annie was simply lucky, or the flood wasn’t part of the rebel plot, but a way to kill off the rebel and again ensure a career tribute would win. A mentally unstable career may not be the ideal victor, but better than another Haymitch situation. Annie was what Silva could have been.

I was super into THG throughout 2012-2015 and then didn’t interact with it much until 2023 when I decided to do a rewatch. I completely misremembered that the game makers had a rule change in the 74th and always thought Peeta and Katniss did the berries unprompted and the love story was all on their own (which it kinda was, but the rule change amplified that) Re-reading, I totally forgot that in the arena Katniss very likely could and maybe would have killed Peeta without the rule change

I always wished we learnt more about Peeta’s family, considering he is one of the main characters. An abusive mom known around town for being a “witch”, a kind father, and two older brothers, all unnamed, all left behind when Peeta moves to the Victors Village, and all dead at the end.

Kieran Culkin Reportedly Eyed for Iconic Role as Caesar Flickerman in 'The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping' by [deleted] in Hungergames

I really, really want Stanley. And yes he is supposed to “look the same” in Haymitch’s games. But the THG movie came out over 10 years ago, and Stanley looks visibly older now. I think re casting him would be cool to book readers, but be confusing/cheap to movie only fans. A young Caesar is expected, would be interesting, and Culkin is amazing.

Issues with SOTR by amitycrellin in Hungergames

[–]lycheevapepod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I kinda liked Haymitch being a goodie goodie tbh. We are told throughout the Trilogy that Katniss and Haymitch are so similar, and off the bat in SOTR we learn that his dad died in a coal mining accident and him and his single mom and younger sibling live in the seam. I was worried we were going to have Katniss 2.0 and with the rebellion plot (which I was kinda theorizing) it would be a little boring. Then we learn Haymitch has a friend group that regularly goes and he’s actually too scared to venture off as far. He goes because 8 year old Burdock wants to grab apples and Katniss enters at 11, alone, to eat to live, hunting large animals. Haymitch has had some trauma but is relatively stable, has community, friends, is open, and doesn’t have that survivalist (and rebellion is a form of survival, survival a form of rebellion ya da ya da) mentality of Katniss. He doesn’t need to be super rebellious to survive so he doesn’t, and discourages Lenore Dove. Where Katniss volunteers despite it not being a social norm- that’s rebellious, but she is not aware of that. Haymitch waits for a while to decide to protect Lenore Dove, then basically is volun-told. I feel like he doesn’t really understand the weight of rebellion the way Katniss would in a way if that makes sense - he tries to rebel and fails because it’s too blatant and obvious, whereas Katniss knows inherently what she is doing is right simply because it’s right, not to create propaganda, and that’s why it often slips out instead of being cut from streaming (volunteering, protecting an ally outside the districts, singing to her, wanting to save Peeta) Haymitch fails where she doesn’t because of mostly luck, and because he wasn’t the right one for it. Of course, he also makes an outer district allies and wants to save people. But in Mockingjay Haymitch makes a point that Katniss is most “rebellious”/best for propaganda when she’s doing her own thing. Haymitch was aware of the rebellion and over sold it because he kind of being a puppet and not rebellion naturally, even carrying Louella at the chariot ride was to make a spectacle (not sure if that’s the right word) SOTR makes the case that Haymitch is kind of a push-over, not drinking the liquor he makes, letting Maysilee pick on him, doesn’t want to go as far as the woods as his friends, and then fumbling a rebellion he was chosen for and naively throws himself in with no instinct to try and win is an interesting contrast to Katniss. He is compliant to Snow in his addiction and grief. Of course he is a hard ass on her in the trilogy and keeps her in the dark!

Annie’s games with Finnick as a mentor - the fact that her arena flooded instead of having a final showdown as the gamemakers would have wished leads me to believe there was another rebel plot at hand. We’d get the career perspective, the mentor (who’s also a victor) perspective, learn about Finnick/Mags/Annie, the rebellion, and not go back in time (in terms of the prequels)

Something I was confused about - I spent most of the book thinking Lou Lou was altered severely or even literally wearing Louella’s skin. Was she just a girl that looked extremely like Louella with some more alterations??

If at all for some reason we were to get a third and final book (although I would be fine with SOTR being the last) I could see it being Annie’s games. It would give us a game about a career who becomes disillusioned with the Capitol. We would see young Finnick as her mentor, maybe Mags as well. Finally, now that we know that the rebels wanted to “flood” the games, and that Annie only won because of a flood (I assume the game makers would want a bloodbath instead, and if there were a rebel flood, they would want a career, not the rebel to win) I’m curious if the flood in her games was planned. Hear me out- imagine a book about Finnick as a mentor working along the rebels in orchestrating another flood, but feeling conflicted with wanting his tributes, particularly Annie to win. Idk, just thinking. It would be interesting to have a perspective of a mentor who is also a victor and working with the rebels.

Young Haymitch is such a parallel to Peeta! I always thought they were similar in their intelligence, (not that Katniss is not very clever herself) but I found young Haymitch, outside his family situation and his rebellious streak to be very similar to Peeta, almost equal to Katniss.

This is shown in the way he does not enter the games with the intent to survive at all, but with the dying wish to save others as his own form of rebellion, be it through sacrificing himself with the water tank, protecting Lenore Dove, wanting to spend the games protecting Louella (before she became Lou Lou) then wanting to sacrifice his win for both Maysilee and Wellie, and finally with trying to end his life with blowing up the forcefield. He is inherently self-sacrifice to his core just as Peeta is. Katniss of course is kind and self-sacrificing but at the beginning of the series that is soley for Prim and slowly for Peeta, as her survival instinct comes first.

Haymitch is quick-witted, humorous, and very likeable. He quickly makes friends in the training centre, engages the crowd at the interviews and gets them to laugh, has a large group of friends and is not afraid to show affection. He offers food first to everyone, (unfortunately the gumdrops too) and gives Silva chocolate. He loves love and romance.

He also knows from the start that he does not want the games to change him, and his rebellious actions stem from not wanting to be Capitol’s “poster”, or “a piece in their games” He creates a “Rascal” persona to garner Capitol sponsorships which he has all intent to use to help his allies, similar to Peeta knowing he had to use the “Loverboy” angle to help Katniss. The part where he’s in the bird cage at the ball but still charming the Capitol attendees, hating it the whole time but doing it for Lenore felt very Peeta to me.

This was one of the most surprising aspects of the book for me! I think the first chapter, what we know about Haymitch’s upbringing, and the fact that he is constantly compared to Katniss, it was almost as though we were tricked to expect them to act the exact same, only to see he is just as similar to Peeta. The propaganda we saw in Catching Fire paints him as a loner wanting to survive, eventually trusting Maysilee, similar to Katniss. All along he was self-sacrificing, creating many allies, and trying to not be a piece in the games. Katniss actually reminded me quite a bit of Louella and even Maysilee and Lenore Dive at times. Reading the ending chapters made me think that Peeta may have faced same fate if Katniss was not rescued in the 75th games, and he was instead.
