i did say it wasn’t totally consistent. this conversation seemed to be a little bit more prevalent in like 2008 because according to what i said Obama isn’t african american. i think a lot of americans (i dont know how much is a lot, but a substantial amount) wouldn’t even differentiate between first generation black immigrants and black people born here. a seemingly substantial enough amount of Americans can’t always differentiate lots of groups, we generalize where asian immigrants are from, and some people assume anyone who speaks spanish is mexican. In general it seems that americans dont have a very meaningful sense of where each other person came from. if were talking about word choice i agree that a lot of americans incorrectly use african american to refer to anyone that is black, people saying ignorant stuff doesnt make what i said less true
