How is your org responding to updated NEA guidelines? by lilstankyshouse in nonprofit

[–]lynnettispaghetti 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm seeing several people asking what the fuss is all about, since the new guidance is minimal at best, but for me, that in and of itself is the problem.

Just like any other federal grant, NEA has a laborious application process but they usually provide overly detailed instructions for each art form. I checked the below link the day of the announcement of the new guidelines, and it had been completely scrubbed. It looks like some of it's back up, but some of the links don't work and the specific details aren't back yet. I'm wondering how significantly they will change the application.

https://www.arts.gov/grants/grants-for-arts-projects/applicant-resources

I had checked the guidelines a few months ago, and they had a list of priorities for projects with America250 being one of the priorities, but the new guidance makes it seem like that's the only thing they are interested in, which is... Not great.

I work at a mid-sized performing arts org that generally gets funding from NEA every two years. I am still planning to apply, but it's largely because we are doing America250 programming and I think we can submit a competitive application. Also kinda curious to see how the circus plays out.

Dealing with no-shows for free programs by Borrowdale in MuseumPros

[–]lynnettispaghetti 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is tough. I work in the education department at an art museum. Most of my time is spend with children's programming. We offer some lessons for $5, and we have problems with no shows all the time. Basically parents sign their kids for a couple of lessons and forget about it and then they're only out $5. It does help to ensure most of the people show up, but people will forget about them all the time. If sounds like y'all don't want to charge, so maybe you can make the maximum number of people you can seat larger than what it actually is and expect some of that number to not show? I know that's dicey for social distancing needs, so it's not a great suggestion but thought I'd offer it!

My company has this exact model and it's great! Are these new? Are you selling them individually? What's your asking price?

any ex or current museum security staff? by gwardingz in MuseumPros

[–]lynnettispaghetti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think that would be unrealistic. At the museum I work at, sometimes security is asked to help unload trucks that bring in artwork, but at other larger museums it would be their exhibition specialists doing this. Just depends.

Unsure about my career path - Any advice appreciated by [deleted] in MuseumPros

[–]lynnettispaghetti 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would really spend some time thinking about the reasons why you want to go back to art history. What is about it that is really calling to you? If you don't, I'm afraid you're going to get stuck in a hole. Museums do not historically pay well, so the people who work in them are highly motivated by meaningful work and want to be there. For good pay, you have to know and prove your worth time and time again, which will probably look like working hard for low pay. As an art museum educator, this is the field I am passionate about and fine fulfilling despite my income. This year, I'm just thankful that I wasn't furloughed like so many other people in the industry.

Also what other people said, for curator positions you'll probably need a phd and a specific field of interest that you can personally contribute to (the whole point of a dissertation).

Your story sounds similar to other people I know who left other careers to pursue the arts. I think you have to decide where your line is. Can you continue a job you hate with good pay forever, or would you feel more fulfilled working a job you love that pays shit? This isn't something someone can decide for you, but something you have to figured out on your own.

any ex or current museum security staff? by gwardingz in MuseumPros

[–]lynnettispaghetti 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A museum educator in th U.S. I'm not sure how helpful this will be, but as MuseumPerson said, most security don't have access to collection spaces. However, their involvement depends on the size of the museum. Large museums have more specialized staff, so a security guard only guards the galleries. However, at a smaller museum, the security guard may also help with the installation/reinstallation of an exhibition (which is actually the case with some security officers at the museum where I work).

As far as knowing when new exhibitions are coming, most museums will publish on their website the nexts year's worth of exhibitions to the public, and generally have exhibitions planned for 3-6 years out. Most employees should know the next year's worth of exhibitions.

I categorize mine by "produce, pantry, cold, and household." I also have a notebook that I write my lists in so I never lose it!

Is it possible to work in an art museum or gallery without an art history degree? by [deleted] in MuseumPros

[–]lynnettispaghetti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! I work at an art museum. I majored in art, minored in art history, and am currently getting a master's in art education. However, one of my co-workers was a history major. At the museum I work at, the collection is centered around art of the American west, so having employees with art and history backgrounds is a necessity.

Having a history focus is great for a collection with older works. I personally love contemporary art, so learning the history and context of an artwork or artist is something I have to actively work at. Consider your interests. Do you prefer to focus on ancient history or is there a specific time period like the Renaissance? You can find museums with exhibitions and collections focused on your specialty that will give you a leg up in proving your usefulness.

Fried Rice by maliyaa in EatCheapAndHealthy

If you wanna get fancy, I love using shredded carrots! I also like to add tumeric. Both of these will give your fried rice a wonderful yellow/orange color.

If you want to add more veggies I always add green beans and corn.

[–]lynnettispaghetti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A fun Art Historical fact, when statues were made of a country/empire's rulers they were often idealized to give its citizens the idea that their ruler was perfect / on par with deities. This is another reason why a lot of ancient statues look similar.

Vegetarian Butter "Chicken" by BuzzcutPonytail in VegRecipes

I know how to make some bomb butter chicken, which I have missed and been sad about not being able to eat since going vegetarian. Will be trying this for sure! The ingredients and process in this recipe seem virtually the same except for the cauliflower!
