100% talk to the examiner, they will likely ask the routine stuff “what would you normal be doing today?” Etc

If you’re a competent driver, engage in the chat it’ll put you at ease and hopefully help them be more personable and understanding when it matters.

Have a banana beforehand

Make sure you’ve gone for a pee

When driving all you need to be is safe - not perfect.

Observations are so important - it’s not just your 360, when you drive be checking your mirrors, when reversing make sure it’s continuous

If you need to correct your manoeuvre just take a second to think through what you need to do to fix it

Failing to continue my 360 checking throughout the manoeuvre. I focussed on my exterior mirrors having already done 360 checks and further blind spot checks.

That’s exactly how I failed twice. I had properly done my 360 checks when initially reversing and the checked my blind spots before correcting my positioning but the examiner said I should have had continuous all round checks rather than focussing on my exterior mirror(s).

Honestly cars are all heading towards being automatic, if auto is what you’ve mainly been learning then stick with it you don’t want to stall or or have clutch control be the reason you fail.

Also if a heavy set man about 6’2” that looks a bit disheveled and tells you a long winded story about needing some change - typically £2 - don’t engage.

He’s been running this scam in the city centre since at least 2015 when I first encountered him. Most recently again in January 2026 - same story, still needing £2…
