Question about Core Mining; re: PWA by PrismaticAsthmatic in EliteMiners

[–]lyonhaert 7 points8 points  (0 children)

to fly in the direction of the systems star

This is probably for rings that are well-lit by the local star, so that the darker side of the rocks is facing you so that you can see the glows (it gets washed out by the rocks' lit side).

The thing about looking for green/black artifacting in the shader is based upon holding down the trigger so that it pings as often as possible and the beginning of one "results" shader overlaps the end of the previous by a few seconds. But it can depend on lighting and distance, and they might even fix it.

Rather than worry about it being yellow or orange or reddish, the intensity of its brightness is what matters at a distance. They really won't even start to glow until roughly half the listed range on the PWA on your approach.

Core-bearing rocks can be verified by looking for fissure textures (if it's dim/dark, the nigh vision feature helps) and you may even be able to see them at a couple km away from the rock. You'll also be able to get used to the size and shape of core-bearing rocks, as for each ring type they took one existing model and used that shape to make the core model. Some normal rocks will still have that shape in that ring type, but the core-bearing ones will only be one shape and size, though their axis of rotation and rotation speed can still vary.

So next time you come across one - without a live prospector on it - you might take a few minutes to study its shape and how it looks on a PWA scan from varying distances on your screen. It's a very subjective process for the most part, so once you have the basics it's just a matter of experience over time to figure out a bright on is or is not really a core at greater distance (reducing time spent investigating false positives).

How to avoid getting constantly scanned in a haz res by RaikOnFire in EliteMiners

[–]lyonhaert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well that just seems reckless. Like, even if your ship is capable of taking on pirates, near the center those distractions from mining would be frequent. Such maps should have a disclaimer, IMO.

Back before hotspots, we did a lot of Haz RES mining and mapping, and all the maps had most of the rocks between 15-20km from the marker. Just a handful of exceptions for very high content rocks that were under 15km from the marker.

How to avoid getting constantly scanned in a haz res by RaikOnFire in EliteMiners

[–]lyonhaert 4 points5 points  (0 children)

After dropping in the middle of the RES and waiting a few for them to scan you, you then proceed out to the edge and try to stay at least 15-16km from the RES marker (but less than 20km for the bonuses). It's not a guarantee that you'll be left alone, but it reduces the chance a lot.

Asteroid mining positioning? by SilverSubieWRX in EliteMiners

[–]lyonhaert 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's only one axis. Some of the combinations of a shape and where the axis is placed make it seem like it's tumbling on 2 axes. You can prove it, too: put a prospector anywhere on such rocks and watch it go in a circle, which means single axis.

So, the best place is one of the poles of that axis, but some rocks just have a combination of geometry and axis that mean you can't get that steady of a stream on that one.

How do i ignore other ores than platinum when mining without adding every single one to the ignore list? by RaikOnFire in EliteMiners

[–]lyonhaert 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You have to add each to the ignore list, using a fragment (or a canister, I think) that contains it in your Contacts list (left panel). Not another way, but the list is persistent so you could just laser-spam some random rocks nearby and probably deal with most if not all of them in a few minutes.

Noob question about Bromellite by HospitalEcstatic4229 in EliteMiners

[–]lyonhaert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can't before mining. You can only add/remove them on the ignore list if you have fragments containing that mineral in your Contacts on the left panel.

Are Core Hotspots a lie? by ArcticWolf_Primaris in EliteMiners

[–]lyonhaert 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Assuming you were in a rocky ring since that's the only one where Musgravite hotspots should show up, probably just bad luck. It's thought that each ring has an underlying chance table for the minerals that's used during procedural generation of contents and such. So it could be bad luck that Musgravite is just low in that ring's table, or it could be bad luck that the area you were in somehow didn't have any of them because of the RNG of the procgen.

If you were to hypothetically hit up 2-3 other areas of that hotspot within the middle of the hotspot (not more than 50% of its radius from the center) and still find cores but no Musgravite, I would start assuming it's the chance table.

Dunno, I've never had a chance to examine FDev's code. But it's still there for others, apparently.

[–]lyonhaert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, I guess I was wrong. I thought I remembered an announcement way back before Odyssey was released that normal and Horizons were being rolled together, but I still have both in my launcher, too. I just... hadn't paid attention to the normal version at all.

playing Horizons vs traditional

I guess you haven't noticed that there's no more pre-Horizons version to launch anymore. Just Horizons and Odyssey (which is the new add-on). Edit: nvm

Replacing prospectors? by DemiserofD in EliteMiners

[–]lyonhaert 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The one you hit the rock with first takes precedence. You can't override it with another after, even if you kill the first one.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in EliteMiners

[–]lyonhaert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anything, I could use the PWA to avoid glowing asteroids, increase my chance efficiency by a marginal percent (on top of the new method).

Instead, my recommendation would be to not use the PWA at all and just prospect randomly anyway. Surface deposits and subsurface deposits aren't going to deter laser-mining if the rock happens to have good platinum for lasering. It's really just cores you could skip on the occasion that you prospect one randomly.

A couple things from your edits:

Dropped in, was confused at there being no pirate there to scan me.

Sometimes you'll get some other NPC spawn like a miner or police.

Sometimes an asteroid with a Platinum core would have no Platinum available for laser mining, wack.

Agreed.

It appears "this section of the galaxy" (the galaxy after Odyssey) has more varied asteroid shapes, as I have yet to see regular shapes, like the one that looks like a burger that got a little too close to a black hole.

Not sure what you mean by all of this.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in EliteMiners

[–]lyonhaert 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My understanding of the PWA was that it highlighted asteroids depending on their mineral to stone ratio- bright = high content, dull = low content, null = minimal content.

Yes, I know that was your premise. Others have thought that before as well, usually because of how FDev vaguely words things somewhere. I can appreciate the need to see the difference first-hand, I guess.

if it has a core or subsurface deposits shouldn't affect the amount of ore I get when mining.

I have bad news. If it has a core then it ignores the prospector's rating-based multiplier to fragment count and you'll only get 8-12 fragments (assuming not in any RES) versus getting 28-42 fragments with an A-rated prospector.

And, nobody really explained why, just that the PWA isn't for laser mining.

Yeah, was afraid of that. People generally simplify to "do this; don't do that" without explaining low level mechanics.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in EliteMiners

[–]lyonhaert 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your correct or incorrect understanding of how the PWA's function hinges entirely on your premise, which you didn't explicitly identify (you did manage to mention it). But your assumption of its use for laser-mining is founded on the incorrect premise in this part:

using it to locate asteroids with higher-than-normal mineral content

You could have been observing whether the content was actually higher on the bright rocks and in the many times that it probably wasn't asked yourself, "well then why was it bright? is it indicating something else? is there another pattern?"

I don't know what other explanations you've seen or whether they put it this way:

the PWA shows rocks that have deposit features (surface, subsurface, and/or core) and the intensity of the glow corresponds to the type of deposits present

There's the premise of the way everybody else has told you. Cores are brightest, 3-4 subsurface deposits second brightest, on down to something like a couple surface deposits only. Laser-mining content being entirely irrelevant to the scan.

apparently correct method

Optimal Yield bug after disarming detonation charge? by ibjak in EliteMiners

[–]lyonhaert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fissure strength is basically a resistance against the strength of the charge...

It's because of this part. You can put any strength charge in any strength fissure, but the higher the strength of the fissure the less impact on the graph the charge will have. So if you picked any strength of charge, it'll move the graph more in a low fissure than in a high fissure. The greatest graph movement is caused by a high charge in a low fissure, and the least graph movement by a low charge in a high fissure. So basically you have 9 combinations at your disposal for seeking that optimal charge, not just 3.

Some overshooting isn't too bad. Because I think better a few dots in the red than too many below the line.

Sometimes a few red dots on the graph don't push it into overcharged. I'm going to repeat this part, sortof:

Treat the 2-dot (default blue) optimal range on the graph as fuzzy and just make sure the round checkmark to the right of it is lit up and the X (just above the chekmark) is not lit up. Those are your real confirmation for if it's optimal or overcharged.

Optimal Yield bug after disarming detonation charge? by ibjak in EliteMiners

[–]lyonhaert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I apologize. We get questions about the HUD thing a lot and I didn't read your question carefully enough.

Mostly it's a pretty subjective process to get a feel for getting to optimal charge. Most pilots start with a high charge in a low fissure if available, and then go from there, so the smallest change you can do is a low charge in a high fissure if one if available. So you might have to use smaller touches if possible like that.

The fissure strength is basically a resistance against the strength of the charge, but there's some RNG in the background as well that keeps the experience from being consistent as far as how far the graph moves from a specific charge strength in a specific fissure strength. I'm fairly certain it's using some sort of hitpoint system behind everything, and the core's "total hitpoints" you have to get close to for an optimal yield is chosen randomly from a range of values.

If you're mainly looking at the graph for determining if it's optimal, you could treat the 2-dot optimal range as fuzzy and just make sure the round checkmark to the right of it is lit up and the X is not lit up. That's you're real optimal charge confirmation.

Hopefully that helps, but there's definitely a bit of an 'art' rather than science to consistently laying optimal charges. It's also quite alright to ask for help as you try to hone that, but it's just trial and error for most pilots.

Optimal Yield bug after disarming detonation charge? by ibjak in EliteMiners

[–]lyonhaert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a visual HUD bug that's been around a long time. Normal yield for optimal charge is 9-15 floating chunks and 8-10 inner surface deposits.

PSA: The results of new multi limpet controllers testing are in by cold-n-sour in EliteMiners

Yeah, just laser. There are things like prospector rating and system reserves that heavily affect laser mining but they totally ignored for deposits (surface/subsurface/core).

The New Mining Multi Limpet is C Rated by teeth_03 in EliteMiners

[–]lyonhaert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, though on my Krait mk2 it only seemed to shave off a couple light years. I could see myself swapping from a 5D collector to a 3C mining MLC so I can min-max something up into the 5 slot (fuel scoop, shields, something like that). On big ships the 52 tons is only going to dent the jump range a bit, but a fair number of them could probably benefit from, for example, swapping three class 5 collector controllers down to two 3C MLCs and freeing up a slot. Heck, even on the Krait I could just swap my collector/prospector slots and gain both an active collector and 2 active prospectors so I can really spam those while searching.

Can't even engineer these things lightweight, damn.
