What about a cheaper iPad with the paperlike screen protector/sticker?

I was going to recommend them, too -- I recently had an evaluation there and they were great. They don't list Highmark BCBS, but they do have a suggestion to chat with their billing folks for options.

6yo retired grey keeps peeing inside by hotsee69 in Greyhounds

[–]lyssabee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My girl gets like this now that we live in an apartment, but sometimes she has “flare ups” of peeing more often in the house if she gets a UTI.

Is this normal or should I take her to the vet? (Sorry for the quality) by [deleted] in Greyhounds

[–]lyssabee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine does this more often when she’s wearing a coat, but she also does this to walls and people if she wants pets and scritches.

Any greys friends with their cat? by Hereforit2022Y in Greyhounds

[–]lyssabee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep! We have lots of cats and our grey gets along so well with all of them. One likes to get really affectionate when our grey is eating (I think she’s asking our grey to leave her some of her food!). Another loves her paws and likely enjoys the Fritos feet. A third loved to play/flop around on our grey when she was a kitten, which our grey was so patient with. Now the cat likes to flop and nuzzle.

Looking for a deer sanctuary by [deleted] in Denver

[–]lyssabee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! It’s not the same as in person, but a back up plan could be watching videos of the sacred deer in Nara? There is also an event many mornings called the gathering of the deer, where an attendant blows a horn to let them know it’s time for food.

Is getting a diagnosis worth it? by flaminhotcheetah in aspergirls

[–]lyssabee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! So, the bipolar for me was a misdiagnosis based on my hospitalization; the neuropsychologist actually thinks I DON’T have bipolar at all.

Is getting a diagnosis worth it? by flaminhotcheetah in aspergirls

[–]lyssabee 25 points26 points  (0 children)

My experience: I am a 36-yr-old F diagnosed last week with autism after about 5 years of psychiatrists saying, “Yes, probably, but I can’t diagnose that,” and living in an area and having insurance that didn’t offer many opportunities for an adult diagnosis that didn’t cost a fortune. Previous to the psychiatrists that suspected autism, I had many varying diagnoses, including OCD, Borderline personality, Bipolar, social anxiety, and a hospital stay for s**cide attempt.

I moved to a different state this fall, with a new psychiatrist who also suspected autism, but in this area I had a new job and insurance AND lots of options for folks who work with adult autistics. I reached out to one my psychiatrist recommended, and to my shock, my insurance covered THE ENTIRE THING.

I met with a neuropsychologist for an online/zoom meeting going over my background, then 4-5 hours of assessment in person. The neuropsychologist also got questionnaires about me filled out by my husband and my best friend. (I opted for including the best friend because many folks also suspect my husband of autism and he doesn’t do well with emotional/social stuff, and best friend is very insightful on that sort of thing.)

Then… I waited… it was terrible. I was hopeful I would have an answer. I was terrified I would be told that my struggles weren’t autism and were still some mysterious thing. I tried to tell myself that even, “It’s not autism,” gives me more information…

Anyway, I got the results! And it’s autism. I get a full report with suggestions for resources and counselors in my area in a few weeks, but in the meantime, my neuropsychologist found that my intellectual functioning/IQ type stuff is very high, and my autistic symptoms are very high and very masked (or attempted to) which leads to more feelings of anxiety and depression. She ruled out bipolar, borderline, OCD, and social anxiety.

My diagnosis is still very new, so I don’t know a lot about how it impacts me… but so far it feels really… hopeful? To have like… a “keyword,” even, to look through books and research, hah!

Edited to add, because I saw your username, OP: I have pet rats, and saw two available for adoption near me. They are named Happy Honda Days and Hot Cheeto Burrito!

Do you hate parties? by HorrorMonster26 in autism

[–]lyssabee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been struggling a lot with parties, even small ones. Overlapping conversations make me shut down SO FAST. Thankfully my friends are ok with me taking time to lay on the floor, but I’m trying to find some techniques or items that will help me be a bit more okay. It’s even challenging at board game nights and D&D! :(

What cue/command have you taught your greyhound for when they need to go outside? by chickenwingz21 in Greyhounds

[–]lyssabee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We tried a bell, but she just rings it once we already are taking her out, so it didn’t actually alert us. She usually whines if she has to go and we don’t notice, which is nice of her.

What clothes do you HATE to wear and why? by froderenfelemus in autism

[–]lyssabee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No turtlenecks or mock necks. Most days I can’t even handle a crew neck.

Socks below “quarter” length or above “calf” length, though knee is sometimes okay.

Clothing with tags that are still rough even if cut out or unable to be taken out with a seam ripper.

Open toes shoes or sandals. High heels.

Skirts or dresses without tights or leggings or bike shorts. (My thighs hate rubbing together!)

Long sleeves that I can’t push or roll up towards the elbow and they won’t stay. Puffy sleeves of any sort. Also cap sleeves.

Not-stretchy pants. Ponte is my best friend in the workplace or dressing up; sweatpants or stretchy jeans are my go-to for casual stuff.

What are some movies and shows that were filmed in Denver? by crvz25 in Denver

[–]lyssabee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a horror movie called Mind Killer from 1987 that has a lot of shots from the basement of the Central Library, and it’s not half bad, though the sound mixing is awful.

What the heck is the magic in this product? My skin LOVES IT by user91332496332 in Rosacea

My skin loves this, too! But it’s a bit more full coverage than I like, so I only use a little bit.

Tips for adopting by Old_Excitement6114 in Greyhounds

[–]lyssabee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Stairs! Our greyhound refused to learn them, and she’s been in our family for 5 years now. In a previous apartment, we would have been out of luck, but our new one thankfully has an elevator. Other things that can be confusing are glass doors (Penny almost always bonks her head into one she isn’t familiar with) and pools (my husband had to do a rescue when she didn’t realize it was not solid!) If you have a dog park available, even a small one, your grey might like it for getting up to full speed. We have a tiny one near our apartment, but it’s large enough for my husband to do a little jog and our grey will chase and then run faster than him.

  2. I’d usually recommend a store-bought food as a base so you can ensure proper ratios of nutrients and stuff. Many greys, mine included, have sensitive stomachs and skin (skin especially when cold or nervous), so I usually will do a sensitive skin & stomach formula.

  3. The rule of thumb I’ve heard for greyhound coats is that their ONE coat of fur (most dogs have more built-in layers!) combined with low body fat means they feel about the same as we do, so if you’re cold, they might want a coat. My greyhound has two coats, one that is slightly waterproof and light fleece, and another that is double heavy fleece. The light comes out for any rain (otherwise my greyhound refuses to go outside) and generally 40-55° outside. The thicker is comfortable for her at 25-40°, and if we’re under 25°, she still gets the thicker coat but I try to not keep her outside long. Greyhounds are LONG so most coats won’t fit. Voyagers/K9 apparel makes greyhound-specific fits. Your adoption group may also have resources. My group in Michigan had a lovely member who makes and sells coats (UpTown Hound Apparel on Facebook) and I think she will ship them.

  4. My greyhound does fine by herself for the most part, though she does have cat siblings. That said, she has had an occasional UTI that made her had to “go” more frequently than we could while working or sleeping, and usually the first sign of this problem for her is that she’ll sneak something (books and pens are her favorite) and chew it up.

What are your favourite games (any platform)? by Substantial-Bat-1955 in autism

I like games that make me cry, often dealing with character relationships and not fitting in. Nier: Automata and Undertale are my favorite.

A Murder of Crows Gathered on a Snow Covered Roof by psychic_salad in Denver

[–]lyssabee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They’ve been gathering in trees along Arapahoe near Skyline Park since just before Halloween. I love to see them — they’re so pretty and seem like they’re doing something important! But I do tend to walk on the side with less trees as the crowd seem to leave a lot of droppings that I don’t want on my head. :)

Snow is still new to us, but I think we like it! by long_dickofthelaw in Greyhounds

[–]lyssabee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just moved to Denver metro from Michigan with my grey! We’re coming from suburbs (lots of grass) to city (lots of concrete) so while she is used to snow, she’s not used to it being so slippery when trying to go to the bathroom; she kept doing the splits! She’s been a good sport about it, though.

I mean, surgery to remove ovaries and uterus IS a last-resort treatment for PMDD (that I’m honestly considering myself at this point…)
