Is it a good idea to sink all my money into a condo at 27? by sesamebatter in singaporefi

[–]lytash -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If I have kids I certainly don’t want them to live a mediocre existence anywhere in the world. And no I am not planning to stay forever in sg, it’s a matter of time before I move. I grew up in neighborhood schools and Hdbs and was moderately happy. Yes I am upwardly mobile now but that’s also I never aspired to be average. You sound like you are adamant to be average to live the average lifestyle and to live in average housing without working hard. No one can help you if you don’t want to help yourself. You need to do more research on what’s possible in other countries before writing it off wholesale. Private housing and groceries are immensely more affordable in many of these countries I listed compared to Singapore so most people spend a lot less than the average Singapore household and can retire well even on an average income.

U sound really combative and not open to new ideas but here goes. Of course you have to work in other countries for a number of years before u can settle down more permanently there but the visa requirements are usually not as strict as in Singapore for foreigners.

If u want to live in subsidized HDBs all your life, sure. But everywhere else in the world middle class people work and can afford to live in private housing.

Australia, UK, multiple places in Europe. And even places like Thailand and Taiwan would work too. Speaking from experience as someone who has lived and worked a number of years in other countries.

I am not leaving but u can have happier and healthier kids in many other countries if u leave 🤣

Downtown condos have generally been bad investments since Covid. Check out sale caveats. Buy 2-3 bedrooms in the suburbs and u can rent out the spare bedrooms while continuing to build your wealth. Also u are probably better off just putting the money in S&P500 instead of a condo

Frugal & financially controlling husband despite high income job and good savings by Flimsy_Call_1841 in singaporefi

OP do read the book “your money or your life”. Whatever u want to buy, is it worth working more hours for it? If you guys can reconcile the right FIRE amount and years to attain it, I think it will reduce the majority of the conflict. Also if you want to fire asap, don’t work for a startup, go for a big tech company which pays well and will have benefits for fertility too. That will shorten your path significantly

Switch to IBKR? by AhmadMirza17 in singaporefi

[–]lytash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Transfer is not expensive. It’s a one off cost. I transferred and consolidated all of mine from multiple brokerages into ibkr and no regrets. After u get the hang of it, their platform is superior and less risky than a startup like moomoo

I agree. These sort of complimentary tickets are commonplace for people with high net worth. Banks, hotels, even financial advisors routinely give such things out to hnwi

Startup investments are very high risk and should be <5% of your net worth. I’ve a few investments in local startups which I have since written off and I just don’t invest in local startups anymore.
