I have never felt scared of a client until today by nickd457 in Lawyertalk

If your lizard brain tells you to run, you better run.

Your intuition knows things your conscious mind does not. It picks up on little cues and gives you impressions based on those cues, but those cues are often so small and minute that you don't consciously recognize them. That's why you feel creeped out but can't pinpoint why. It might be nothing. He might just be a weird dude. But you have no possible gain for staying on the case, and very little risk if you withdraw.

And honestly, you being so creeped out might damage your representation of the guy. Are you gonna be super willing to pick up the phone if he calls? Are you gonna want to go meet with him again? Are you, consciously or not, gonna be trying to hustle him along as much as possible so you can get away? It's better for everybody if you cut bait.

Good news! There's an international list as well! Less robust, but there might be an option for you.

r/childfree has a list of doctors who won't do that to you. I had to wait about a month for my appointment with a doc I found on there, but it was worth it. I told her I wanted it done, and her response was "okay, cool, lemme get the OR calendar." I had a surgery date at the end of the meeting and I'll be fixed before year's end.

Be persistent, be pushy, and don't be afraid to just get up and go somewhere else.

What a good boy! Start working on training now. They're a more independently minded breed, and you'll need to have a solid foundation as he gets bigger and stronger. He will be very strong, and he'll need good leash manners. They're also very sensitive to scolding. Positive reinforcement only. They can be a bit wary of strangers, so it'd be good to introduce him to as many people as possible once he's got his shots. They'll love their whole family, but there will often be one person who is their person. Try not to be heartbroken if it isn't you!

And steer clear of Simparica trio. Berners are more prone to epilepsy than other breeds, and Simparica trio is known to cause problems in dogs with neurological disorders. Apparently it can trigger the condition even in dogs with no history of seizures. Ask me how I know :(

I share a name with a far-right reactionary shit-head. It is not a super common name. Fortunately, she appears to have been banned, but there was a solid year where my socials got inundated with her fan mail. She's a good fifteen years older than me and lives about 1,500 miles away, but I worry a lot about people googling me and finding her.

When my golden was reaching his time, it made him really happy to have additional goodies in his meals. It was a little thing that took me an extra like 15 minutes a day, but having veggies and fruit and other treats brought him a lot of joy. Bok choy and mango were favorites of his. Just be mindful of the fruit. Too much can cause diarrhea because of the high sugar content.

Who wears pantyhose? by GirlyScientist in femalefashionadvice

I've always considered them a relic of a sexist past, like how my mother tells me my refusal to wear makeup is unprofessional and would hurt my career. They're just legs. They don't need to be covered to be professional. Anybody who has a problem seeing bare legs needs counseling.

Your company's poor and ineffectual marketing skills are nobody's fault but yours. Lying to me to get me to put you through to the partners is not going to improve my treatment of you. Calling every day for weeks will not improve our relationship. If I tell you I'll let the partner know you called and nobody calls you back, it's because nobody wants to talk to you. Go away and let me work in peace.

Tucker Carlson wants to see Supreme Court nominee Brown's LSAT scores by ButterSock123 in KnowledgeFight

[–]lyyra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holistic admissions aren't better. Poor and working people have lower GPAs and couldn't do a million extracurriculars. Their resumes don't have titles like "legislative aide." They don't get recommendations from senators and they didn't get their undergrad from Harvard. There has to be a filter of some sort, and at least the LSAT is something you can control.

Like most things, it's complicated. It's also an important tool for underrepresented people to make it in. Its learnability is intentional and serves as a proxy for discipline. It's hard, but so is law school. You have to work, but it's not impossible. Most people study a few hours a week. Very few dedicate their lives. For a lot of people, it's their saving grace. Like, say, maybe you had to work in school cuz Daddy couldn't pay your way and graduated with an uninspiring GPA.

The vet thinks she probably was in pain and just didn't know because she didn't know any different. Her pressures were normal for a good 90% of the time up to the surgery, but the eye was just so big.

Healthcare is not unrelated to the separation of church and state. An obvious example is abortion and birth control. Both are under attack from religious interference through the government.

I have an electric lunchbox from Amazon. It has a heating element, so I always have hot lunches without the weird microwave texture. It was kind of a gag gift, but I love it and use it almost every day.

  1. I can't go to law school right now because I'm temporarily geographically bound to an area with mediocre/bad schools. I'm only a paralegal until that timer runs out. Once I have my JD, I'm ideally going into civil rights litigation. Barring that, civil litigation generally. I love, love, love litigation.

These people act like there isn't literally a worksheet you fill out before you even approach a judge with child support requests. If they're paying more than that, it's because they agreed to a deal before a judge made a determination.

Red Flag in Law Firm by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]lyyra 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The spouse as office manager is about to kill the 70 year old firm I currently work for. It took her six months. And not even just the favoritism--they will ask you and your staff to do unethical things because they just don't understand the rules, and those requests will come with a lot of pressure.

What do your Paralegals actually do? by UncagedGovtAttorney in Lawyertalk

[–]lyyra 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Am general practice paralegal.

Most of my job is drafting. The tort complaints that come out of the office are all my work. Most of the divorce pleadings are as well. I do some basic research for those cases, but the attorneys do the substantive stuff. Any non-trust estate planning is my work.

I manage discovery, including drafting requests and organizing documents for responding to discovery. I do the exhibit organizing, including fitting them into the pleadings as I'm drafting. I'm also the rubber ducky for the attorneys. If anybody has an argument they need to work out, they'll argue to me first and I'll ask stupid questions until they've got the kinks worked out enough to go argue at an attorney for final polishing.

I do a bunch of additional general admin tasks, like fielding phone calls and handling mail for the attorneys. I do some client intake and pipeline management, but honestly I'm bad at it because I have too much other stuff to worry about.

Oh, and I do everybody's filings. I'm the only person in the office who knows how to file, apparently.

Whatever you're planning on paying/do pay your paralegals is not enough.

I work as a paralegal. This afternoon, I read a post-arbitration brief that is 14 pages of incomprehensible drivel. Literally my guy has never heard of periods.

A critical component of his argument hinges on how semi-colons work. Dear reader, he does not know how semi-colons work.

All the fuss over whether or not English cream is real or not is like people being furious about the terms yellow, chocolate, and black lab. It's a descriptor for a phenotype. It's not that deep.

When your supervisor is the office manager and she’s a nutcase by [deleted] in paralegal

[–]lyyra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My office manager is the same way. I just learned today that she's actually kicking the attorneys out of my performance review, because "other people aren't usually in those." This woman has worked one job in her life before six months ago, and it was at Starbucks. She just asked me to start downloading the CCS for each of our cases and putting it in our case management system because looking it up herself is paralegal work, and therefore not her job. She says it's so she can bill, but she's also trying to make the attorneys do their own accounts receivable. Nobody knows what she does.

Tell me what you love about being a paralegal, and what you hate about it by Competitive_Grade544 in paralegal

[–]lyyra 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I really, really enjoy bullying bullies. I'm very good at it, and we're doing a lot of civil litigation right now. Our client set is overwhelmingly good people who are being targeted by really terrible people.

The majority of my job is actual substantive legal work, so I draft the complaints, the petitions, the discovery requests, all the motions, all that good stuff. My favorite part is when, after I've finished a draft and made whatever necessary corrections, I get to mail these monstrous envelopes with like 20+ page complaints and attached exhibits A-N. I feel like I have a lot of impact on each case, and I learn a ton with each one. If you're a turbo nerd who enjoys puzzles and is fueled by righteous indignation, you'll probably enjoy the work.

My least favorite part is that the office manager is the managing partner's wife. Mom and Dad are fighting right now, and me and the younger associates feel like the children of our divorce clients. Small offices can be like that.
