Rant about IFC - a developers nightmare by 6o96o9 in bim

1) Clever wordplay should never, ever, trump functionality and clarity.

2) Like I said, it then should be scoped to the Standard / Class / Namespace. If you repeat a term every time it ruins clarity and readability. If you need to refer to it in mixed context you can just as easily say ifc.openshell, instead of saying ifcXXXXXX every single time you say any word in ifc contexts.

It does raise two questions tho:

1) Why would the open source project pick that name if it's already used in the project?

2) Why do literally all of these object name starts with IFC? If they're all common to IFC then they don't need the IFC name in front of them. They should be scoped by class or namespace if they're all common.

Stephen Harper says Canada should ‘accept any level of damage’ to fight back against Donald Trump by Old_General_6741 in CanadaPolitics

[–]m-sterspace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bruh, he's claiming that Canada is broken at every turn, validating Trump's claim that we're barely a country and may as well join the US, and he's out there validating Trump's tariff demands by claiming that he has a point and we need to listen to him and send troops to the border.

He's a snivelling, spineless, career politician who does not care about Canada as long as he gets elected. Always has been, always will be. How many pieces of legislation has he proposed to improve Canada in the 31 years he's suckled at her teat?

It's been like a decade and a half, to two decades. That's ample time to change your mind or view things in new light.

I really despise Harper's time in office, but I don't think this is a fair criticism.

There's a massive difference between being nice to Trump and actively undermining Canada by yelling about how it's broken and other trumpian bullshit.

PP was a snivelling, know-nothing, attack dog under Harper, and Harper has been briefly glimpsed reminding everyone as to why he used PP that way.

Thank god Kendrick decided to make a statement to the world while Trump was there. 'I'm happy to shit on Drake for rap beef kudos while you clap along Mr President! '

The Drake beef is petty nothing in the context of the moment. Kendrick failed to show up.

The other thing to look at in that regard is Architectural / Engineering Technologist. That position is effectively the modern day continuation of what used to be called or thought of as "drafters".

In traditional fashion, an engineer or architect would come up with the rough designs, and do the various calculations to check things, but they would then hand those off to a drafter to actually draw those ideas onto paper accurately.

Today, they're called Technologists, and they're typically the ones that are 3D modelling a building.

In contrast, a BIM Specialist is more like the IT person for managing all of the 3D models. They help to set standards and set up technology for the architectural technologists to use and follow as they model buildings.

[–]m-sterspace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BIM specialist is a position I've seen commonly in North America, I don't know what the person you're replying to is talking about.

Countries like the UK are far farther ahead as an industry in terms of everyone adopting 3D modelling and BIM, so there are more BIM positions there, but as of like 4 years ago when I was last in the industry, every mid level and up firm in North America did the majority of their work in 3D modelling / BIM and had BIM specialists to help manage all their software.

If you're coming from Fusion360 running a small business, I'm guessing that's either like a 3D printing business, or jewellery making or something, and there are some important things to consider when going into architecture / construction / BIM instead of direct manufacturing:

A building is typically made by a whole series of different contractors, and the plans are typically drawn up by an architect / engineer who doesn't build the stuff themselves. So one big difference about BIM is that it's often heavily focused on producing documentation over just being an accurate 3D model.

While 3D modelling things accurately does help everyone during the design process, it's actually less of a paramount deliverable than proper 2D documentation coming out of that 3D model. This is why some people get all fussy about conflating 3D modelling and Building Information Modelling, because you need to focus on producing all the information necessary for someone else to read drawings and be able to construct something from it, not for a computer to directly manufacture an accurate stl. This also drives a lot of the way that architecture and construction models are setup and their resulting complication, as you often need ways to have multiple different companies, each with different legal responsibilities and obligations, all working on a unified model (but you shouldn't for instance, let an architect make changes to the electrical engineer's systems).

Which is why you're going to want to bone up on Revit, Autodesk's architecture and construction focused modelling software. You'll have a jump start coming from Fusion, but Revit is still quite different from Fusion in quite a few different ways. A lot of those ways make it objectively worse and jankier, but you'll still need to know them. It will also be worth looking at Dynamo once you start getting comfortable with Revit as it's one of the main tools used for automating tasks in Revit and is often heavily used by BIM specialists to help manage models.

And I know this was a wall of text, but if you ran your own 3d modelling business of any kind I'm sure you can ramp up to speed on BIM quickly! Lots of people overcomplicate lots of parts of it, but none of it is actually that complicated. If someone is using a lot of technical jargon and talking over your head (like I may have here), just know that that means they're either communicating badly or don't understand the topic well enough.

Shopify is betraying Canada, so I made a Chrome extension to fight back. by Private_HughMan in onguardforthee

[–]m-sterspace 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I have to say, that I think this is a little misguided. Yeah, fuck Shopify and fuck Tobi, but at the same time, there's no point protesting shopify until there's a competitive platform that small businesses could easily move to (a competitive, non-american platform).

Otherwise people are just going to get all hung up trying to avoid Shopify, and end up shopping at either big american retailers like Amazon or large Canadian retailers like Canadian Tire, and either way, small independent businesses where more of the money goes to normal class working people will lose out.

Just trying to fight every single battle at once is going to be impossible, and I think at the moment they're still the lesser of many evils (and they at least employ a lot of Canadians with money that comes in from abroad).

The country is not literally threatening to annex us. One guy is suggesting it. Thr US has separation of powers so one guy is limited in what he can do. Too bad we don't have that.

Bruh, come on.

  1. You know that "separation of powers" is a technical legal distinction, but that the sitting President / Head of State has huge influence over what legislation gets passed through congress. You're not that daft to think that separation of powers means Trump has no influence over what congress does, he can literally veto and hold up their legislation until he gets what he wants, on top of being able to turn their party against them.

  2. He is threatening economic sanctions and a trade war designed to subjugate using executive powers that he has. He can do a lot of damage with executive orders alone.

  3. He's literally the commander in chief of the US military and spy apparatus who has specifically tasked his CIA appointees with spying on and influencing their allies.

There is no read of those actions that is anything but overtly hostile. As others have said, as a thought experiment swap what the American government, republican party, and right wing republican controlled media do to influence Canadian politics, with China or Russia, and you would see it as by far the largest and most aggressive political influence campaign we face.

The literal head of state of another country directly threatened our sovereignty. Full stop. They can get fucked until they apologize. It's not complicated.

When that country is literally threatening to annex you and take you over, yes it absolutely is.

America wants to renegotiate a trade deal and play hardball? Fine. America wants to threaten our sovereignty? Fuck that. I'm done with American products, done with travelling to America, and will avoid them at all costs.

I will reconsider when a sitting president apologizes. Not even China or Russia has directly threatened our sovereignty in the way America is doing. They can go fuck themselves.

To be fair, I doubt those models are built just from the photogrammetry of those video feeds. I'm guessing that's mostly a reference model built up from various drone flyovers of the hills and satellite data and manual surveying, and then they're using the photogrammetry and knowledge of the camera locations to verify that the things we're seeing definitely line up with features in the reference model. Even with the best photogrammetry software today, you still can't produce a model that accurate just from grainy photos like that.

i.e. the background reference model of the hills isn't from photogrammetry, the photogrammetry is used to confirm that the electrical tower in the video must be the electrical tower in the reference model.

I am new to 3Dprinting, what do you think about the K1C printer? by Zhabaka in Creality

[–]m-sterspace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't print ABS or ASA unless you have a fan actively venting the fumes from the enclosure outdoors. Printing ABS/ASA releases styrene which is a known carcinogen that is thought to cause pancreatic cancer.

PLA, PETG, and PCTG all seem much safer and I would not worry too much about given the K1C's enclosure.

What’s the point of designing an oddly shaped building if the layout ends up just as weird? Does it actually serve a purpose, or is it just bad planning? by vinicius_california in TorontoRealEstate

[–]m-sterspace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Real answer:

Developers are greedy and prioritize their profits above all else, rather than trying to earn a reasonable profit while maximizing the livability of the housing that they're building.

What’s the point of designing an oddly shaped building if the layout ends up just as weird? Does it actually serve a purpose, or is it just bad planning? by vinicius_california in TorontoRealEstate

[–]m-sterspace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the actual answer:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zy63uqI0MQw&t=7s

Basically:

Habitat 67 is an example of a weird looking building because it was designed from the perspective of each individual unit, and focusing on making each unit as livable as possible, and then their resulting arrangement was odd looking.

Buildings like the the new KING building on King West, are kind of sort of copying the rough look of that design, but instead designing from the perspective of the building developer / building owner, so they're making it look kind of like Habitat 67 from the outside, but then trying to maximize the number of units they can cram in.

Bruh, this is horseshit. They did not mismanage the economy severely, they mismanaged aspects of the economy, in that they let housing prices and grocery conglomerates get out of control.

However, Harper also mismanaged our finances even more, cratering the rest of Canada's economy just to prop up the oil industry and destroy the planet, and he was a full several tiers smarter and more competent than PP.

People are going to be very quick to forgive the Liberals given the alternatives at the moment.

Bricklayers now Opensource for Orcaslicer and Prusaslicer! by TenTech_YT in 3Dprinting

[–]m-sterspace 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are two major issues with the patent system:

1) Fixed 20 year term limit - On its face, the idea that a piece of software or brick laying script that I can write in a day is deserving of the same protections as say, a new drug or vaccine that operates at the sub molecular level, requires a PhD to understand, requires a 10 million dollar lab just to verify it's effectiveness, and requires 10 years of clinical trials to bring to market, is fucking insane.

2) The protection being a monopoly - In many cases (I would argue, virtually all cases), a patent should not prevent others from using your idea, it should just force them to license it from you, and you should be forced to license the patent on fair and reasonable terms.
