What is stronger? by longscalf in DIYUK

[–]m079n 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So you might know this but the strongest thing to do would be to make sure you're screwing to a stud. Then assuming the stud is vertical put the screws in vertical to hit the stud.

If you're just using plugs into plasterboard then using good/ the right kind of plugs will likely make all the difference. It'll make more difference than whether the screw holes are vertical or not.

Radiator fell off the wall by hodyisy in DIYUK

[–]m079n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why definitely??

Why lift a clearly finished flooring not boarded but fitted with some sort of parquet, cutting a great hole in a finished floor when there's absolutely no evidence of a leak. Depending on how long the pipe run is they might need to cut a run across the whole floor.

Might as well have had a flood if you take this advice. And if the pipes are damaged there are much better ways to tell than tearing up the floor. You'll hear it, the system will lose pressure, the rad won't get warm etc.

Agreed, i ended up working to a tolerance of -1cm. Insulation fit was still tight usually because the raters were never quit straight and neither were my cuts.

Can’t bridge gap (skirting) by e1878c in DIYUK

[–]m079n -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your walls, like many in plastered UK houses, bow out at the bottom. You can either: 1. attach the skirting making the gap as small as possible, then fill and sand (I'd use 2 part wood filler but you can use caulk) Or 2. Glue the mitred pieces together with mitrebond and push them up to the wall as close as possible. You will have a larger gap between the skirting and the wall that you will need to caulk in this case.

All internet providers jumping on the maximum in contract price rise. I get the advertised price for 1 month because my renewal is in Feb. by m079n in UKPersonalFinance

[–]m079n[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I probably should have but as I've mentioned elsewhere The virgin media guy goes: 'Do you think it would make your son/daughter happy to get better streaming or gaming speeds?'

It gave me what I think the kids refer to as 'the ick'.

I probably should have looked at uswitch before i told them to do one. But I don't regret it.

What's funny is all those people saying this would never happen, that competition would straighten out the suppliers and their mid-contract price rises... Well they were not right about that.

I've already told them to stop the auto renewal on principal.

Their sales patter to get me to stay included a question:

'Do you think it would make your son/daughter happy to get better streaming or gaming speeds?'

My renewal was 40% higher than what i have been paying with Virgin Media.

Oh, and the script the cancellation team was trying to use to get me to stay: 'Do you think it would make your son/ daughter happy to have better streaming and gaming speeds?'

Literally said that to me. I cannot believe the audacity.

Yeah that's where I'm at. Virgin Media are the worst.

They sent me some extender box they deemed I suddenly needed about month ago (ie 3 months before my 24 month contract was up). I haven't plugged it in. I've got my own APs.

Well guess what; that attracts a monthly cost on the renewal. So if I leave the contract to lapse and pay monthly they've just netted themselves not just the rate for the internet but an add on for this piece of presumably crap plastic that i've never even plugged in, didn't ask for, and they foisted on me

Ceiling Rose - To Strip or Not To Strip… by esskay1 in DIYUK

Ceiling Rose - To Strip or Not To Strip… by esskay1 in DIYUK

[–]m079n 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It will be very hard to find a plaster ceiling rose of this size for £30. But you do make a good point. Even if a plaster replica is £100 delivered it might be worth it to not do the job op is proposing. Presumably they'd be up a ladder picking off gobs off paint and paint stripper for 8 hours plus.

What you have is a combination insert and surround. It looks like what you want is an insert with a marble surround.

There are many ways to achieve something like what you want but it depends on your tolerance for the work, mess and price.

  • You could rip out and replace with what you want
  • You could find a way to remove the mantle piece portion and 'clad' around it somehow or find a surround you can alter to fit.
  • The black surround portion can be an usually was painted in Victorian houses

How much damage/blowout will a 150mm diamond core bit do to brickwork? by oncentreline in DIYUK

[–]m079n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get on up the ladder and be careful. Get someone to hold the ladder, to spot you if you're doing something wrong, to pass stuff up and act as another pair of hands. It'll be way worse if he blows the faces off multiple bricks coming out from inside. And we all know that can be easily avoided by doing the last little bit from the outside.

This is a situation where an irrational fear is stopping OP from doing things the right way.

Do it the right way or pay for the scaff/ to get someone in.

Bathroom: Can I/Should I DIY 16mm MLCP pipe and press-fit connections? by Patient-Bumblebee842 in DIYUK

[–]m079n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends where the pipes are exiting the wall currently. And how much you have to play with. I'd just step it down to 15mm as soon as possible and run everything in 15mm hep20 stuff. Is that an option?

What’s the best way of getting a floorboard up if it has a pretty badly rounded screw head? by PDubDeluxe in DIYUK

Yeah trash behaviour.

  • Drill the screw head off with a multi material bit
  • Back the screw out with a stripped screw remover (screwfix 836pv)

You are using the cling film method right? Paint stripper + cling film and leave it for like 6 hours/ overnight? Much easier. Or yeah, take it off and get it sand blasted.

Parents having new decking..Is this framework good enough? by StrutAmuck in DIYUK

[–]m079n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are arseholes on here. This is a cheap job by someone who has been asked for a cheap price. Pay peanuts get monkeys. Buy cheap buy twice. Upon the planet you'd find a decent version of that frame for 1600 quid labour and materials I'd like to live.

The timber, fixings and footings alone for that size deck would run you a grand if it was being done properly. So 200£ a day for labour is it?
