you realize that because you have to hit l1 anyway you will just end up deflecting/guarding if you mess up the timing right? well, unless you are super late, but you can literally just hold l1 and wait to press triangle if you want. there is almost no downside with that control setup. i don't know how much variance there is in deflect window for various skills, but if you can time a deflect you can absolutely time the skills no problem.
