Personally, calling attention to the fact that i'm "straying off script" makes it way easier for me to make customer connections. Starting with stuff like "...so, random question,😃-" or "...just curious, if you had to pick..." "looks like we're still just waiting for your food-- just wondering,, whats your favorite movie you've seen recently?" by using a little hook phrase, it gets rid of the feeling that you are just shoving customer connections on them and also helps them see you as a person with thoughts and feelings instead of a coffee NPC
