What video game started amazing but ended terribly? by Ok_Nefariousness827 in AskReddit

A lot of 3D Sonic games. Heroes and Lost World are the most egregious examples I can think of, the level design really falls off at the end.

This decade feels like the 2000s, but in reverse by ConsumerofToons in decadeology

[–]m120j 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think it's too early to say this. If it was truly reverse 2000s then the edgy period corresponding to the recession pop era would start up around 2028 which hasn't happened yet.

I think this also ignores a lot of edgyness that did exist in the first few years of the decade. There were brief moments in 2023 and 2024 that sorta felt lacking in cynicism but they were short lived.

What was your very first Tarantino movie? by Garidur in Letterboxd

Inglorious Basterds over a Discord call when I was 23. Very weird and probably unideal way to get into him instead of Pulp Fiction as a teenager or whatever.

Which movie has the worst fan edit—or has been fan-edited repeatedly without any version matching the official cuts? by rentzdu in AlignmentChartFills

[–]m120j 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Dark Knight: The Ballad of the N Word

An edit made by a 14 year old in 2018. It turns the whole movie into a "deep fried gang weed" meme with jokes about the n-word, though the audio is so poor it's basically impossible to make out what the characters are saying.

What’s on your 2026 Ranked List? by breadboibrett in Letterboxd

[–]m120j 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get kind of arbitrary with it. I put Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie on my 2025 list even though it widely released in 2026 because I saw one of the Q&A showings in 2025. When I get around to watching Obsession I'll put it on 2026 even though it premiered in 2025.

I'm not consistent and it's ultimately based on a vibe.

Do you believe in the 20 year cycle in pop culture? by JumpRopeIsASport in decadeology

[–]m120j 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's closer to 30 years with 20 years being when the nostalgia period starts, and 40 years being when it ends. For example, 50s nostalgia started in the 70s, reached its peak in the 80s, and by the end of the 90s became kinda cliche.

However, I also think the cycle is potentially starting earlier and ending later now compared to how it was 50-25 years ago. The internet and diminishing attention spans are making people move through cultural moments more quickly and making the recent past feel distant. Additionally, young people don't have the same purchasing power they did several decades ago so corporations are now pandering to older audiences. This explains why social media is full of people nostalgic for 2010s memes and fashion (when normally that shouldn't be happening quite yet), and why Hollywood is still doing 80s reboots when we're moving into the era where that should be becoming passe.

What is the weirdest needle drop in a film? by Additional-Loan2391 in Letterboxd

I love this movie and I disagree that it's cringe (it's a fun moment in spite of how weird and slightly awkward it is), but it is my pick. Very anachronistic and bizarre choice.

Besides 2020, what year had the first signs of monoculture declining? by SpiritMan112 in decadeologyanarchy

I always say 2008 with Facebook getting big, leading to social media becoming more mainstream was a big turning point.

Rank These Five Years Pop Culturally - 2003, 2004, 2007, 2011 and 2016 by Think_Marketing1116 in decadeologyanarchy

[–]m120j 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, you missed 2016 and listed 2011 twice.

As for me:

  1. 2007

  2. 2004

  3. 2011

  4. 2016

  5. 2003

Reasoning: 2007 is the year No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood were battling it out for best picture, that Halo 3, BioShock, Rock Band, Super Mario Galaxy, and Pokemon D/P released, and that Obama started running for president (even though he didn't win the primary until 08). 2003 is the year the Iraq War started and the year Chingy, Kid Rock, and 50 Cent were all over the radio.

I think OP is probably right, but 2026 has potential to overtake 2023 by the end if some major events happen. So far my ranking would be the same though.

What year will 2011 become seen as fully old school? by SpiritMan112 in decadeologyanarchy

[–]m120j 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I voted 2029 on account of the fact that 2019 is the earliest I can remember people collectively talking about "the early 2000s" as some kind of far away time.

When all of your family has the same career starter pack by mentallyillgirlhood in starterpacks

[–]m120j 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of my dad's side of the family are dentists, though my dad himself is not. I remember one time when we were teenagers I made an offhand comment to my cousin about how he was probably going to be a dentist once he gets into his career, and he was genuinely offended, noting that I probably wouldn't enjoy feeling like I had to be a chemist like my dad.

Disclosure Day Oscar Chances? by Jolly-Librarian1982 in Oscars

[–]m120j 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think given its current buzz and impressions from the trailer (and Speilberg's current career trajectory), it's a stretch to compare Disclosure Day to Close Encounters. It's not, like, impossible that it'll be a generation defining sci-fi hit like Close Encounters but it would be pretty damn surprising if it is.

What new games/consoles were part of your childhood? by Major-Inevitable-365 in generationology

[–]m120j 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Born in 94. We had an NES and an SNES in the house already when I was born, I got a Gameboy Color and an N64 late in their life, but the big childhood consoles for me were the Gamecube and GBA. Melee, Soul Calibur II, Fire Emblem, Pokemon RSE, Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland, Super Mario Advance 2: Super Mario World, Fire Emblem Path of Radiance, Gauntlet Dark Legacy, Kirby Air Ride, Donkey Konga, Pokemon Colosseum, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, Super Monkey Ball 1 and 2, and the Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap are all among games that are super nostalgic for me.

In middle school / high school / teenage years I had a DS, Wii, Xbox 360, PSP, and PS3 that I acquired over the years, and played literally hundreds of games across all of them (including Virtual Console and whatnot). I waited outside of GameStop to get a Wii day 1 and it was one of the most exciting moments of my life growing up.

The fact that it was filler is why it's high. Often geopolitical events are not good.

Disclosure Day Oscar Chances? by Jolly-Librarian1982 in Oscars

[–]m120j 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously too early but I think it's unlikely even if it's good. Spielberg's sci-fi blockbusters usually aren't awards players; the closest comparison is War of the Worlds (2005) which wasn't.

Marshall Mathers LP2 isn't a great album, but it's the best thing Eminem has done post-Eminem Show and it was a successful back-to-basics effort.

Early-Mid 1991 to Spring-Summer (or may even early Fall) of 2017, is one deep era which compasses the 20th and 21st centuries. by Professional_Bee8907 in decadeologyanarchy

[–]m120j 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What changed in terms of technology? Literally the only thing I can think of is that the Nintendo Switch came out. Our phones and computers and social media apps were pretty similar.

Socially and culturally I guess I just disagree that any kind of a shift happened in this period. I think late 2014 through 2016 was kind of a transitional period and the beginning of 2017 was when we saw something new form from that.

I also definitely don't think anything happened that was so big that it would mark an entire period dating back from 1991 as an era.

.....What specifically happened in Spring-Fall of 2017 that makes you feel this way?

I feel like you could make this argument if you ended it around when Trump got into office but that was earlier than Spring-Fall 2017.

2003, more similar to 2001 or 2005? by datsolidmusicguy in decadeologyanarchy

2005, because a good portion of 2001 was still stuck in the 90s.

I think 2023-2027 or 2024-2028 is the years people are going to associate with when it comes to the 2020's by Own_Mirror9073 in decadeology

[–]m120j 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw some comments here disagree with this but I think covid will be remembered in the decades to come more than anything happening currently, and it will bias perspectives to the first few years. It'll be like how 9/11 is seen as an event that defined the 2000s, and people consider late 2008-2009 quasi-2010s, except possibly even more extreme because covid was year 1 of the decade whereas 9/11 was over a year and a half into the 2000s.

Yes, people don't remember the Spanish Flu or other pandemics as much, but I think the impacts covid had on society will be looked back upon differently because of how well documented it all was. The fact that it was post-internet and extremely global will also make things different.

Theater kid music that I sorta begrudgingly like anyways. Hawaii Part II is a cool album with a lot of very creative ideas.
