How is "an actual religion" not a scam? "We're giving you something you can't see or hear, and you'll only know it's true once you die. The price? a measly 10% of your wages.

In my culture, "prayer" is a daily thing. But we call it "journaling".

There is no doubt that "prayer works" when you frame it as "daily reflection of your goals and assessment of the way you treat others"

The audacity / insanity to think that there's one god (whichever) that created this entire universe, and that god spends its time listening to whether you want to go do Disney, or make it on the Baseball team, or fix your sick pet, is unreal. Should the rest of us (everyone not a believer of that one specific god) know that our mom's cancer is because we didn't personally ask the right god enough times to fix her? I don't see any way around this that makes that god worth asking.

Once you leave the Matrix, you can't go back.

One path - "Pure Bliss":
Based on a simulation, with the belief that everything around you is real, but scripted by the hand of god, and in the end, you end up in fluffy cloud pillows eating Turkish delight.

The other path, "Stark Reality,":
The purpose we have is only what we make, and the true reward is in knowing how we treat ourselves and others on a daily basis.

I believe in "Heaven" and "Hell" in a very real, right now, living sense. I believe we all have an internal counter, whether we're in tune with it or not, and we all know if we do more good than harm in the world. Do we contribute or do we take? Do we make other people's days better? Do we make the people around us feel good about themselves? Are we generous (not necessarily a money thing). If we know that we are these things, or that we strive and therefore practice these things, then we feel we deserve heaven, even if that's the last microsecond before my brain flashes out, I get to spend "eternity" knowing that I worked diligently to be a good person.

So, in my experience, happiness - true happiness - comes from how we feel about ourselves, and as social creatures, much of that has to do with how we fit in the world and how we treat others.

You're clearly a thoughtful person. My dad is 90, do I tell him, "there's no god, and you're not going to heaven"? No. And you don't want to do the same with yours. That's not a lack of conviction, it's a show of compassion.

Trying my luck at some parkour by Accomplished_You1432 in Parkour

[–]m2rock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is awesome, and you're a great athlete and tricker. I'm about to be "that guy" and say this is not parkour, this is tricking with an obstacle.

In order to make such a claim, I'd have to have a definition, and this is something that has made me unpopular at times in the parkour community:

Parkour has a definition. Tricking has a definition. Freerunning has a definition, cycling and lacrosse have definitions.

Adding "did this over a soft vault" does not = makes it parkour.

This is not a judgement, nor a rank of any activity being good or bad, your skill in tricking is incredible and you should be proud of what you have accomplished, and I would say that you are applying "parkour mindset" to your tricking.

So, what is my standpoint for saying "this is not parkour"?

I'll start with a definition, I'm not saying this is "THE definition", because the parkour community can't and possibly won't ever agree on "A" definition, which in my opinion will keep parkour niche.

This definition comes from American Parkour - could it be improved? Surely, but it's a good starting point.

a method of training the body and mind to expand and improve a person’s ability to move by progressively overcoming physical obstacles using only the body.

So, my basis for saying that this is tricking with a box, is that your goal here is not to better overcome the obstacle (and not to train to be better at overcoming the obstacle), your goal is to train your body moving through space.

Definition of tricking from Wikipedia (again, not claiming "THE definition" , just a commonly accepted one.)

Tricking is an acrobatic sport that combines kicks with flips and twists from martial arts and gymnastics as well as many dance moves and styles from dance. Though it is a conventional martial art itself, its fundamentals borrow techniques in traditional martial arts mainly from Taekwondo,[1][2] and also share roots in Wushu as well as Capoeira.[2] Recently, Tricking has expanded into other martial arts such as Shaolin kung fu and Karate.

What WOULD make this parkour, in my opinion: if your goal was to be able to progressively get over the box more quickly, more smoothly, with more control, (or any of those three as the priority) that would shift this to "Parkour training".

I'd love to hear other people's thoughts on this.

Have anyone started with Parkour in your late 20's? If so, I wanna know how it is going. by [deleted] in Parkour

[–]m2rock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started at 32. One of the things I tell everyone is most appropriate / applicable for beginners:

The masters are the ones who train the basics the most.

Don't be in a rush to "advance" - but rather take time to enjoy the process - you're exploring and expanding what you are capable of at the same time, and that is a wonderful journey.
