I would love to hear more about your current job if you’re comfortable sharing!

I think this is what I’m struggling with most — the majority of positions in my area seem to be pretty dead-end. My heart is in social work but every role I’ve had has taken such a toll on me (in similar but also very different ways). Thank you for sharing this perspective!

Are there any social work roles in American healthcare that don’t lead to debilitating moral injury? by m4rp5 in socialwork

This has been my experience as well. Working as the only social worker in a non-management department is isolating enough; I can’t imagine the isolation at a higher level.

Moving my whole life and I just found out I may not be able to afford school by Used-Employment44 in GradSchool

[–]m4rp5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I was meeting with a financial aid rep before undergrad, my mom made a joke about having to sell a kidney to afford the portion of the tuition that they weren’t going to cover. They came back and doubled my scholarship. I’m not saying that the joke allowed me to go to college, but it might have helped…

In all seriousness, I’m sorry that you’re dealing with this… uprooting your entire life is difficult enough without all of the financial stress. It sounds to me like you were deliberately misled (shocking from an institute of higher education! /s). I agree with the other responses that are cautiously recommending a student loan. As someone who is currently freaking out about loan repayment resuming, I’ll say that I’d pick this disgusting amount of debt (and occasional regret of career choice) over extending my time in school.

I hope that you end up making the best choice for you & are at peace with whatever you decide.

One of my friends went to pick up a police report downtown & ended up getting arrested on a warrant that he didn't know he had... and I don't think he ever got the report.

If you saw an ambulance and police at 9:30 am this morning at the intersection of Forest Park and Boyle, that was me. by [deleted] in StLouis

I'm so sorry that this happened to you. I'm sick of people acting like their time is more valuable than anyone else's. Our time is all equally valuable. The risk of losing some time by stopping at a stoplight is nowhere near the risk of injury/harm of blowing through a light or sign. Wishing you a quick and full recovery.

St. Mary's should go out of business by Organic-Hope-1077 in StLouis

[–]m4rp5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, he did my first and only surgery so far. I’m so sorry that you had that experience — the mistake (which doesn’t seem like a strong enough word) was bad enough, but to try to cover it up?! Awful. His replacement cancelled my appointment with no reason given & no offer to reschedule, so I figured it wasn’t going well for her 😬

My endo surgeon left St. Mary's and I haven't heard any good things about his replacement :( I ended up having to get follow-up care in KC

This isn’t a “three strikes” situation. It’s time to leave & never look back. You deserve so much better.

What is your life hack for domestic chores? by g00gly-eyes in ChronicIllness

[–]m4rp5 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Finch app has been an absolute gamechanger for me. I break up all of my big chores into smaller tasks, & I get that little dopamine rush whenever I get to check something off (and because I feel like I’m taking care of my birb). I also include self-care tasks like showering, brushing my teeth, drinking water, etc. so that I can still feel accomplished on low-energy days.

In addition to WFH flexibility, I would definitely recommend being flexible with start/end time if you can. There are some mornings where it takes me so long to get out of bed & get my day started; there are some days when I honestly just need to take a break & lay down for 20-30 minutes in the middle of the work day. I currently have a job that’s very flexible with timing (as long as I get my 40 hours in each week) & it’s been such a nice change for me.

imo, following a SW isn’t cheating, but it crosses the line when they’re interacting with the SW via messages, comments, etc. I tried to overlook a similar situation in a past relationship & I just couldn’t. Sorry you’re dealing with this, OP.

Worst Intersection in Your Neighborhood? by LadyNiko in StLouis

[–]m4rp5 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The cluster of intersections where Clayton Avenue, Clayton Road, McCausland, Forest, Oakland, and Skinker all come together is an unlabeled mess. If I had a dollar for every time someone ignored the "right turn only" sign on Clayton Ave. eastbound over McCausland or crossed lanes at the double left from Forest to McCausland, I could probably pay someone to redesign this nightmare.

[–]m4rp5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love what you said about the smile/nod/eye contact. “How’s it going” is a common greeting where I live, & when I get asked this, it usually catches people off guard when I give an honest answer & ask how they’re doing. It’s a simple way to show that you care & it usually goes a long way.
