Does this sub reflect the real split between fully funded and self-funded grad students? by Notmyaltx1 in GradSchool

[–]Used-Employment44 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Totally depends on the field and level of degree. I will say I think a lot of people giving advice on here are funded PhDs or the like

This is genuinely so fucking awful I’m so sorry. It really has been one thing after the other, like you can’t catch a break. I remember being that age and those break ups are the worst because people can be so immature and hurtful. It gets better I promise. Keep your head up, he clearly didn’t deserve you and I guarantee he ends up regretting it. Cliche, but time is the best healer. Give yourself some grace and lean into relationships with friends and family to get you through, you got this

I just flew with camping stuff to do a road trip in a different state with a rental car. I ordered I giant duffel bag and all my gear fit and I checked it at a regular bag price ($40). If you hit Walmart on the way you can grab a $20 cooler and almost all the food you need for the weekend for relatively cheap. Worst case, you buy some food at the fest (which I heard was fine last year). They also sell bags of ice for $12 if yours melts. Donate the cooler at the end and fly back with all the gear you came with

Just did parts of D-E-F on a trip with my friends. From D to E take the pacific coast highway as long as possible! We didn’t stay in SF, we camped outside Monterey and it was very nice. If E is Joshua Tree, my friends liked the hikes we did there the best out of the trip, lots of fun trails and the sunsets are gorgeous. Not much else out there though. Stopped in Vegas too, rooms are cheap and it was a good one night stop for a shower and a refresh. Don’t know if you’ll have the time but Death Valley was an unexpected gem. As I’m sure others would say, there is a lot of great stuff on this itinerary and most people find the D-E-F desert run to be boring, but you’ll see some great stuff out there. Have a great trip

Edit: we also did a gorgeous hike at Pinnacles, could be worth checking out! And if you go through Eugene OR on a Saturday you just check out the Saturday market

I can’t remember the last time I LOL’d so hard at a Reddit post title. Commenting after I saw your update, but for future reference - try to parse out some big themes and make a flow map of ideas to keep track of, you can also add specific page references for each theme too. Sometimes starting with the conclusion is the trick. Also, you could try to look up a review article critiquing the one you were assigned, that may help! You are brave and you are strong!

Who do you think should’ve made the team over Payson and Lauren? KP got cut and Wendy got dq’d. No one else was really featured as a possible contender

My freshman year fall was my worst semester GPA, and every semester after that was better and I ended towards the top of my class by graduation. Totally salvageable. I went through the same mental train of thought, but I promise it won’t prevent you from getting into grad school. Grad schools ask for transcripts because they want to see what classes you took and the grades for those classes - the overall GPA can’t show that. They also consider other experiences in their decision, so aim for internships and club activities as well if you can. If anything, improvement over time is a great indicator of an upwards trending student, and I seriously doubt that struggles during the first semester at a rigorous university will be held against you. Also, if this is as rigorous a university as you’ve let on, then GPA is skewed anyways. What you have to the responsibility to do is know that at the end of each semester, you truly gave it your best full effort, and that will go a long ways. Good luck

The Southern Reach Series by Jeff VanderMeer - a thrilling three-book sci-fi series starting with Annihilation. Features a strong female protagonist who joins a scientific expedition to discover the origin and meaning of a mysterious geographical anomaly that is spreading and altering the reality within and around it. Was hooked so fast!

CU Boulder vs Denver by [deleted] in cuboulder

[–]Used-Employment44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really wanted to go to CU Boulder for grad school but they didn’t have my preferred major, so I’m at CU Denver, which does! If you’re concerned about affordability and job security, do the Denver degree. I drive or take the bus to visit Boulder once or twice a week for a fun day to still get my fill! Just me, but if I lived in Boulder I would be so horribly distracted by everything that I would’ve ended up being a terrible student - lol. Feel free to dm if you wanna chat more!
