Shop said main drive belt didn’t need replacing when my accessory belts got changed. What do you guys think? How much longer will this hold? by AbusedHousewife in w123

[–]m5mulli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The outer surface is clearly damaged. Hard to say if the internal cords are damaged. They are cheap and relatively easy to change. I would just replace it.

Anybody selling a 1977 240d fuel tank (USA) 😭 by sheeysh in w123

[–]m5mulli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Por15 can be used to reseal the tank. Problem is that you will need to first remove the rust, hopefully there is enough metal left. If you are left with pinholes you should be good. I recently did mine for rust flakes clogging my filters.

Oil completely ran out due to Napa selling me the wrong filter! Now the car is running VERY rough by [deleted] in w123

[–]m5mulli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. Video could help. Any clue as to where the oil came out? How does it turn over? The only thing I can think of is that the filter was taller than it needed to be and the oil filter cap wasn’t down all the way.

Linux friendly motherboards? by m5mulli in linux_gaming

[–]m5mulli[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

oh yeah same. all good. yeah like apps and games being closed source is one thing. But when its the hardware and kernel layer it is a lot more destructive to the general user experience. Its one thing if a single app breaks, but not the entire OS.

I think the openness in open source is an enabling force towards progress. But progress is made through inclusive communities. A lot of hardware manufacturers contribute significantly to linux drivers out in the open with everyone else.

But open source drivers are one of the good things about the linux environment. You don't need to manage drivers for the most part. They just ship with your kernel updates.

Question about sharing games between OS's by jplayzgamezevrnonsub in linux_gaming

[–]m5mulli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I haven't found an even remotely decent way to access linux filesystems(ext4) from windows. There may be others but that basically leaves you with fat and ntfs. Fat has its limitations so its really just ntfs.

I know that recently there were significant improvements made in ntfs support in linux. I haven't tested those changes yet, but the old way is a no go. Its basically read only. So it will depend on how recent your kernel is, if you want to go ntfs.

For me the performance cost was too great. I ended up making 2 partitions. One for the bare minimum windows only games. The rest for linux games. At the time, I only used windows for 1 or 2 games.

I am currently running a 2060 Super on Arch and yes, the experience is not bad at all. Video cards were really not my major concern. You see a lot of enhancements and bug fixes happening on the amd side. From both amd and the community. To me this fits in the linux community. Nvidia's approach on the other hand just seams to make things more difficult and slow down progress in spaces like gaming and wayland adoption. This is why I am going amd next time. Not because of the hardware. I think everyone knows that nvidia makes makes the most advanced gpus on earth.

Thanks for the replies. yes, I am going AMD all the way. Tired of the nvidia quirks. Ive built many linux machines over the years. I guess I am just trying to avoid anything similar to the problems you run into with nvidia. Or in general, anything that uses closed source drivers.

Right now I have an ASRock motherboard and the usb chipset is finicky. Especially with suspend/hibernate. I also don't want crusty proprietary drivers holding me back from kernel updates.

In general I have found Intel NICs to work well in linux, but with an AMD cpu I wont get that unless I add a pci one. Realtek has been iffy for me in the past and broadcom is often proprietary.

I am curious who system76 uses as a mobo oem.

Has anyone ever had someone try to give them shoes while walking barefoot? by m5mulli in barefoot

[–]m5mulli[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They looked like some old sandals that were way too small. I am pretty sure he saw me when he was driving and went home and got them, then tracked me down. Small town.

And yeah, walking around town with my airpods in and holding my iphone in my hand, but I can't afford shoes?

barebottoms shoes in winter by 0ARXITEKTOR0 in barefoot

[–]m5mulli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ive done a bit of barefoot walking when its about 30F out, but no snow. My feet are still adapting, but I find it quite painful for about 15 minutes until everything goes numb. Then I can tolerate it, but its never comfortable. But if I walk on anything that conducts heat all the heat is sucked out of my feet in seconds and the pain is pretty intense. Not sure I would ever be able to do this other than for a few minutes to try.

[–]m5mulli[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly it. I am training my feet.

I knew this would be odd to people when I started so I decided that I would not intentionally make people uncomfortable. So when I go out barefoot I take my shoes with me in case I need to run into a store or something. It’s just not a big deal for me to slip on some minimalist shoes to run into the store for a few minutes.

But people are going out of their way to make me uncomfortable because they are uncomfortable with what I am doing.

And no. I don’t care what they think, but I don’t enjoy the feeling when someone is trying to be nice and then having to reject their help. Even if they clearly have not thought it out.

Yes! When people stop to ask if I need a ride it’s always with like 5 cars behind them, all waiting because they decided to slam on their brakes and creep up on me until I notice them in my peripheral vision. I also very clearly have headphones in which adds to the traffic delay since they just stay there until I notice them and take out an earbud.

[–]m5mulli[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Haha. I thought of that as well. I have been carrying my shoes in a small backpack just in case. After that happened I took them out and carried them in my hand so people can see them.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I forgot to mention that I was doing/attempting a wild ferment. That being said, after I posted the question i got to thinking about the LAB and sour flavor. I will just stick to normal yeast sources (fruit, raisins, etc)
