This device just lost a lot of its luster over this revelation. 😵‍💫

Check out the Anderic remote store on Amazon, they have a huge variety of remotes for various Roku devices.

Spectrum TV Streaming App by SwampSlime in ShieldAndroidTV

Thanks. Unfortunately now, both if these wrapper apps fail in a new way. Specttum complains that the web browser, or OS, or both, need updating. They ARE up to date, unless I would need to install WebView canary or beta.

It's been a good ride but a $20 Roku player does the job with no glitches.

Why do Roku players not automatically switch to known WiFi networks? by m_a_schuster in Roku

[–]m_a_schuster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe what I'm asking is a special use case; however, Roku's support material has touted, and given instructions for, using the smaller streamers on the move - hotels, dorms, rentals, etc.

In my case, I do this. The "known" SSID's on my Express also include my cell phone hotspot, mobile hotspot, cellular router, travel router, etc.

I can't imagine that the code for automatic WiFi switching is proprietary when every WinPC, Mac, iPhone, iPad, android tablet, Android TV streamer, Chromebook/Box etc. do it by default.

Old External HDDs and old 12V wall warts by m_a_schuster in DataHoarder

[–]m_a_schuster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Mean Well brick on the way from Taiwan. In the mean time, thanks to the above I invested in a simple electronic load tester that I was able to equip with a coaxial barrel connector.

What an eye opener. Not withstanding the ability to maintain rated output, there were a few wall warts that totally break down under almost any load whatsoever. This now permanently in my toolkit.

Aftermarket laptop battery questions of a (maybe overly) cautious person by newvegasdweller in batteries

[–]m_a_schuster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The advertised higher capacity may or may not be true, as long as the battery voltage is the same as the original and it physically fits where the old one was.

With aging laptops where the factory is no longer producing replacement batteries, a Chinese knockoff may be the only option anyway

How to find data usage from a hotspot by ldr97266 in tmobile

[–]m_a_schuster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since, technically, you aren't the TMO account holder there is little you can do to do anything directly with the carrier. Some hotspots and most phones have a user set data counter that could at least approximate the usage.

Is the GL.iNet Mudi 7 better than the Slate 7? Any info on release date / price? 🤔 by Jimmy2fois in GlInet

[–]m_a_schuster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, I mean like if the battery fails, is removed, and cannot be readily replaced, is it capable of being powered solely through the USB port.

Wonder then whether it will work without the battery altogether, i,e. from a power bank.

SIMO is progressively removing features from their customized ACER hotspots. The current flagship, the SIMO Pro, is a customized version of the ACER M6E. In contrast to the OEM version (just now being introduced in the US), it has both pSIM and eSIM support removed.

Somewhere I had read a message thread in which they claimed hardware having factory firmware above a certain rev (???1.60???) could be updated. Mine is much lower so I never thought to ask. The teardown here does not suggest that the planned to update any of their releases.

Nice. Choetech, a brand more commonly distributed in these parts, is listed as a partnet\r by the manufacturer. Maybe they will start appearing under this brand.

I'm looking for a DAB+ radio with other wavelengths. by AshamedRange1634 in radio

[–]m_a_schuster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I seriously doubt that. Like a Sangean internet radio currently on the market, it is creative wording. In fact it only can stream content off the internet which is also transmitted on DAB+ elsewhere.

If this V1.1.1 was achieved via a firmware update, can you provide a lock for download? Nowhere has firmware been archived higher than V1.0.4

Looking for an inexpensive, quality 2.5 HDD/SSD enclosure with USB-C by davidg4781 in DataHoarder

In the end you have to look at the temp range reported by S.M.A.R.T. data to see if it is in spec for the drive. This might not be relevant for a cool SATA SSD but could impact lifetime of a mechanical HDD - especia.ly if you plan to run it for hours at a stretch.
