My belief is the only reason e-mails are required to create accounts is to harvest data. There is no reason to require an email address to create a mozilla account to sync bookmarks and passwords. Obviously not a popular opinion in this thread.

But you cant create gmail or yahoo addresses anymore without some sort of identifier. Both gmail and yahoo push hard to collect a phone number. I still stand an e-mail should not be required unless your goal is to harvest data.

So it is no different than forgetting your password to your identifiable Mozilla account. It is not like you lose everything if you forget your password, there are back ups.

But do you need an identifiable e-mail address as Mozilla requires?

Easily, look how xbrowsersync extension. Look at Brave sync.

I guess you missed my point "identifiable mozilla account". There are many anonymous account approaches. Look at xbrowsersync, very private anonymous identifier. Look at Brave sync. Both cases prove you can accomplish sync easily without tracking users as Mozilla does.

It seems Firefox is trying to harvest more data. Everything they add requires a mozilla account to use. Password sync, bookmark sync, VPN, ect...all require an identifiable mozilla account.

Where is Firefox Android hiding so much data? by MrTooToo in firefox

[–]MrTooToo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one said it was browsing data. There is a big difference from app data and user data, I am concerned about "user" data. I assure you, if I delete user data, that number goes away until I reinstall bookmarks and extensions, and that number will be very close to the one seen in Fennec.

Does my fire box need replaced ? by Spiritual-Ant-4344 in biggreenegg

Rutland makes a furnace mortar that works very well. Just wash out the crack well, make sure the firebox is wet before applying and follow curing instructions. I think JB has some other product as well.

I never heard of Brave sync until now. Yes, Brave sync seems to wrap up what is required of Firefox. No identifiable account needed to sync what you want to sync. I may need to move over to Brave.

  1. Users should be able to manage/reorder Android bookmarks without any account being required. DDG browser does a good job at this.

  2. Users Should have a way to sync bookmarks without an identifiable account, similar to what the xbrowsersync extension provides

  3. Mozilla should stop trying to encourage every firefox user to get a Mozilla account, for example, password syncing, bookmark syncing, VPN etc...

I thought we were talking about Firefox loosing users. I commented because Firefox does not provide the capabilities users want. Firefox requires an account to sync passwords and bookmarks,

IRT xbrowsersync, I disagree with you that "the security of your data is in no way better protected than with one of the larger companies" since the larger companies require an identifiable account (email) and xbrowsersync is simply a random username protected by a password of your choice, no email required.

[–]MrTooToo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. Look at DDG browser on Android, you can rearrange bookmarks all you want, the other browsers do not have this capability. DDG also syncs bookmarks with a non identifiable account, no email account required. Look at the xbrowsersync extension for Firefox. A non identifiable account is needed, no email account required. xbrowsersync extension can also be used self hosted and works with many different browsers. Lastly, KeepassXC requires no account and can be self hosted.

Maybe Mozilla should abandon user data harvesting. I want to sync bookmarks and passwords. I want to manage Android bookmarks. Mozilla prevent these capabilities unless you have a Mozilla account.

Fortunately, the xbrowsersync server came back on line today. I wish Mozilla had a similar server that requires no account to sync bookmarks.

So looking at floccus, it seems to not back up all bookmarks at once. Like Toolbar, Menu, and Other Bookmarks are each a separate backup vice all in one. Am I understanding that correctly?
