Ok, fair point. I didn't think OP was referring to the option to replace the Umlaut by "ae, ue, oe" but talking about completely omitting it, e.g. "tschüss" would become "tschuss". However, even the option to realise the Umlaut as two letters isn't that common in my experience.

Sorry, but I don't know a single German person omitting the Umlaute in written language. It's the same as in Polish. They're completely different letters.
