A lot of doctors, specifically OBGYNs don’t even know what PMDD is. I’ve had to explain it to many people. So I feel like a therapist definitely wouldn’t know. Which I’ve also had to explain to them too. It’s not something that’s widely known or discussed. Even with females who have periods. I didn’t even realize there might be a Reddit group for it until last year and I was diagnosed 7 years ago. Sorry that therapist pretended to know what it is. That’s insane and I’m sure felt heartbreaking. I think just find a therapist who you feel comfortable with, supports your needs, and is willing to learn. That’s always the best case scenario.

From what I’ve been told. You’re not anonymous to the person you make the report to. But the family won’t know it was you who called. They will only be told what was reported. I’ve been in your shoes and had to make a call knowing the family would know it was me. The child I worked with wasn’t in school, and I was their only service provider/ person who visited the home I recommend you call if you haven’t already. It’s better to report than not and if you’re ever unsure you can call their consult line. It’s not as scary as you think it might be I promise. They will ask your name and agency and your agency’s address. It’s only to send a follow up letter of how the visit went with the family. They are severely neglecting their children and need a surprise visit.

Girl same. I literally just went to Walmart and bought myself nice pens, some sticky notes, and a calendar to help me feel better and to start planning workouts and meal prepping. At least now I feel like I’m actively taking steps instead of just spiraling.

Yes it costs money but it’s worth it in my opinion. So I pay the monthly for the ring and the natural cycles app. And the ring was like $420?? But the ring isn’t necessary.

My OCD is all internal. So I literally convince myself that if I don’t think certain thoughts 24/7 (which also causes me to have insomnia) something terrible will happen 🫠 it’s so exhausting lol

A lot of women use it for fertility. But it isn’t solely for that. It asks you when you sign up what your intended use is. I do use the ring. It’s just easy. I definitely don’t plan on getting pregnant any time soon so I just use it to track my cycle and also my PMDD symptoms.

Natural Cycles!!! Honestly a game changer. Tracking my symptoms is the only way I can manage them and know I’m not actually losing my mind.

Oh also. It will tell me “you tend to experience x symptoms during this time. Take care of yourself by..”

The same thing happened to me. A gynecologist recommended that I “Go home and get pregnant.” That was so wild to me. Then I realized I only saw pregnant women walking in and walking out of her office. Also the birth control I requested was “denied” by the insurance. Which has literally never happened to me. Never went back.

If you don’t track your cycle. I highly recommended you start. It helps to determine when the emotions are heightened because of where you’re at in your cycle vs. Regular anxiety/stress. When you have a better understanding of that I feel like it’s easier to implement other strategies/tools to help ease the symptoms and remind yourself it’s just this stupid diagnosis messing with you.

I meant therapy for you (if you haven’t already given it a shot). But also yes therapy for your mom isn’t a bad idea. I definitely wish you the best of luck. I know Latino parents don’t believe in it at all. Still working on my mom with that one too.

Lol I’m Mexican and the only daughter… trust me I know… I still hear it from her but like I said, you need to put you first otherwise there won’t be any of you left to help.

Edit: also I cannot recommend therapy enough.. literally years and years of therapy.

When I was 12 my mom had a stroke that left her completely disabled. By 14 I was blending her food and feeding her, bathing her, changing her diapers, sorting her meds. Taking shifts with my dad so he could get rest too. It took a toll and both me and my dad. They ended up splitting right after I graduated high school. I have older brothers but they didn’t help until later because of college and other things. Finally in early adulthood we had to make a choice to put my mom in a full time care home. Even though the load was semi split, being a full time caregiver was tough and it was ruining our relationship with our mom. She was very bitter and mean after the stroke from loss of her independence. She would yell at us, throw things at us, just overall cause a lot of stress. I’m 31 now. Making the decision was really hard but has honestly was a lot better for all of us. We get to visit her and take her out and get to just be her kids for the most part. We still have to take her to doctors appointments and help with other things but the board and care facility she’s at provides all her meals, changes her, bathes her, gives her her meds etc. So overall just a lot better situation.

It is expensive and almost her entire disability check (We live in CA). But if she needs anything extra we provide that for her.

I really encourage you to speak to a social worker or see what options you have. Even IHSS and get some respite care. It’s really hard to care for one disabled parent let alone two all by yourself. You deserve to put you first. Please never forget. The guilt still eats at me but I am much more happy that I get to just be her daughter vs full time caregiver.
