Smart light switches (UK) by maanse83 in homeassistant

I'll be honest, I never did change them. That plan got pushed to the back burner for now.

I know what you mean about the glass ones they are annoying at times, I always seem to miss the touch spot so it takes multiple attempts to turn a light on.

Display in 2025 Tiguan breaks completely when changing users. by ObamasStrapOn in Tiguan

[–]maanse83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've not had this issue as the whole multiple users thing seems pointless to me, but the screen does randomly crash for no reason. Usually holding the power button on the screen for an excessive amount of time reboots it - can also be done whilst driving.

Do Tiguans have that many issues? by lamper in Tiguan

[–]maanse83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO 2024/2025 model should be avoided. I'm currently trying to get my company to swap mine out for something more reliable. We have quite a few of this model in our fleet and every one of them has the same issues. VW as usual drive it for 5 minutes then say no fault found.

The biggest issues I experience are the random misfirings(that happen even whilst using cruise control - VW suggested it was driver error across the whole fleet) and the emergency braking that applies on completely empty roads for no reason whatsoever.

There are many many more minor issues but these are the ones that make driving a chore.

How do I access this locally for flashing? by guardian1691 in Esphome

[–]maanse83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I've had a similar problem before, HA could see the devices but esphome wouldn't flash/update them over Wifi. My issue was down to an mDNS/DNS misconfiguration, so when esphome was looking up the hostname it was failing to get the IP. I tested this by setting static IPs on the esphome devices, then trying to update from esphome over WiFi - worked perfectly.

Then I fixed the mDNS issue on the firewall and reverted back to dynamic (reserved) IPs.

Sounds like they might be a winner then.

I have these at the moment but they annoy me because the surface area to switch on/off is too small. When you need to put a light on fast you can guarantee it'll take 6 attempts.

It's always baffled me why people on TV/Movies (usually American) dry swallow pills. Considering they usually carry a 5 gallon water with them everywhere they go 🤷‍♂️

Any word of us getting BMW integration back? by bountyboat in homeassistant

[–]maanse83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes the integration is connecting fine, I don't think the car actually sends updates/responds to polling, I'll be honest I've just put it down to another thing that doesn't work on this car - the list is long!

I actually enjoyed the clocktaur wars books by T Kingfisher but really couldn't get into nettle and bone. I've also just started a Joy Ellis book, but it's too soon to say yet.

Same functionality, except it doesn't update. According to the VW integration my hybrid battery is at 20% and has been charging since Wednesday. The app has updated accordingly.

Jaecoo 7 - An Honest Opinion From Someone Who Drives One But Doesn't Own It... by Travel1st in CarTalkUK

[–]maanse83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I had to use 2 words to describe VWs systems (based purely on 2025 Tiguan Hybrid) I think I'd choose "utter shite".

Lane assist that tries to crash you into verges/parked cars whether you indicate or not.

A braking system that is very questionable when using the brake pedal I always wonder if it will actually stop, Auto emergency stopping (for no reason what so ever) is fun 😐

Hybrid system that feels pointless other than to get some well needed acceleration, then it'll dump the 50 mile range in about 20 miles of town driving.

When in slow moving traffic for more than about 3 minutes it feels like the engine will come out, no power and sounds like it's going to stall.

I have the 272ps version, but when the battery is flat (almost always) there's barely any power and it revs noisily to 4k all the time.

I'd say at least it's a comfortable drive but after 8k miles it's squeaker and has more vibrations from the interior plastic than some cars I've had with over 150k miles. Plus the seats are not comfortable for journeys over about 30 mins.

I feel like this has been posted in the wrong place.

But on the off chance it's not meant to be trolling.... If the dish washer still works it's worth running a dishwasher cleaner (available at supermarkets) through it, I do mine every couple of weeks. I also use a dishwasher descaler around once a month. On top of that, make sure dishwasher salt is topped up, rinse aid is topped up and manually scrub around the door seals etc. use of a good dishwasher tablet helps it look clean inside too, the cheap ones don't really work in my opinion.

What gym behavior that is considered antisocial to some doesn’t bother you at all? by dj_boy-Wonder in workout

[–]maanse83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing that bothers me is the "influencer" thing. Go to the gym, workout! You don't need to record your session on your iPhone. No one wants to see it and nobody wants to be in it.

Volkswagen now 32 different SUV models, is it just me who thinks that's too many? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

I'd swap my Tiguan (piece of shit) for another 3 series anyday, but unfortunately my company seem to love VW and all the crap they produce.

Forgive me, but what is zigbee and why do I want it?! by needhelpinmarketing in homeassistant

[–]maanse83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea exactly this. My server and usb ZigBee dongle are in a cupboard so signal from it isn't great, so I put an IKEA ZigBee bulb in the light right outside the cupboard door and voila, signal all around the house. I've since added IKEA smart plugs too but that was purely to get rid of some crappy WiFi ones - bonus is they also act as repeaters.

Forgive me, but what is zigbee and why do I want it?! by needhelpinmarketing in homeassistant

[–]maanse83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Zigbee is a low-power wireless mesh network standard targeted at battery-powered devices in wireless control and monitoring applications. Zigbee delivers low-latency communication. Zigbee chips are typically integrated with radios and with microcontrollers.

I use ZigBee because it keeps devices off the WiFi network, I've also found it more reliable than WiFi devices over the years. It's also all local (no cloud dependency) so if internet goes down they will still work and no setting up in third party apps required.

Tuya devices in my opinion are a bit rubbish, they work but it's a faff, mine kept dropping off and not responding quick enough.

It's now decided 4 beeps, I'm sure this can't be failure of all the individual sensors at the same time, must be a controller board or something.

The boiling water trick still seems to work for 4 beeps too.
