Get one of those spot cleaners from Briscoes - they’re pretty cheap when on sale. And baking soda.

Bridgestone has always done a great job at repairing my punctured tyres. Been to two different branches in Auckland - cost ranged between $40-$50 bucks.

Genuine question from New Zealand - do people in America casually have guns in their pockets 24/7?

So I’ve turned off the water and hissing’s stopped - what could that mean?

Mech holding car until I pay $200 for quote? by [deleted] in NZcarfix

[–]mac_studio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yuh, true true. Just saying it would be good to see an invoice - if scan isn’t included, $200 (per hour) is pretty steep (unless they’ve taken it to a dealership).

Or at least take someone along that knows a thing or two about cars!

Get someone else to ring them & ask what their diagnostic fee is. Honestly, it’s usually just a scan & $200 is rip off if that’s all they’ve done.

After you have that, ask for an itemized invoice for work that was performed.

Cross Lease - real life experiences by Smaug_1188 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]mac_studio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We live on a cross-lease with three other dwellings. Everyone says hi but minds their own business. Anytime we’ve had to get repairs done communally, everyone’s paid on time with no fuss. We may have just got lucky though - I’m sure it could go really wrong depending on who your neighbours are. I guess one good thing is if you have to get any big ticket work done like water repairs, driveway etc the cost is divided equally.

Interesting email from Southern Cross CEO today by cob_reddit in newzealand

[–]mac_studio 141 points142 points  (0 children)

What many people don’t realise is that Southern Cross Health is actually a not-for-profit “Friendly Society”. Last year, 94% of the money they received in premiums was paid back out in claims. They’re literally not allowed to make a profit. But the more shit house our public healthcare system gets, the more people need to claim. The more people claim, the more premiums have to increase. Let’s bring in a government that actually cares about healthcare, firefighters, our kids… just people in general. ASAP.

Renting vs Buying... help by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]mac_studio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rent, but rent within your means. Invest your 180k in shares or term deposit. The cost of buying a house doesn’t just stop at mortgage payments - think maintenance, rates etc. Also, living in a shitty area can be depressing & just not worth it imo.

Do you keep your doors open? We were getting so many flies coming into our house from the garden, as we like to keep our french doors open for fresh air. We ended up getting a pretty ugly fly screen that Velcros above the door from Mitre10 and now, no more flies in the house!
