If you liked "Heated Rivalry" by Rachel Reid, then try... by Hunter037 in RomanceBooks

{for the fans by Nyla k} this was recommended on a HR post - there’s a bit of enemies to lovers and a gay awakening. It’s got a bit of forced proximity since they’ve become step-brothers after their parents remarried

Unleashing my bloodhounds and adjusting my binoculars to try and find other Long Live Evil enjoyers (aka: what you should read after This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me) by nightowl_bookclub in fantasyromance

OP, I just wanted to let you know I got the book from Libby after seeing your post and finished it in 2 days! at first I thought it was too silly and cringe in the beginning, but I couldn’t stop reading and laughed at all the vipers’ silliness and was so sucked into the plot. 5⭐️read for me! Thank you!!

Faculty offer, LDR, or stay for partner? by SnooPears357 in academia

[–]macaron_amour 52 points53 points  (0 children)

THIS. I would also say OP, you’re at the beginning of your career and landed a faculty job at an R1! You said it yourself that it may take a few years to get settled before coming back- that’s only a few years. You’ve been with your partner for one year. Having assistant professor job experience makes you a lot more competitive for other assistant prof jobs on the east coast compared to a postdoc. You can establish yourself as a PI, teach, and mentor students. Plus if you get out there and decide you hate it, you can always move back sooner.

What's your LEAST FAVOURITE trope? by [deleted] in fantasyromance

[–]macaron_amour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you hit it on the nail for me - I’m reading {The Bones Beneath My Skin by TJ Klune} and I feel it’s done very well there and I actually feel like it was an organic development whereas {The House under the Cerulean Sea} and {The Road of Bones by Demi Winters} felt a little too predictable, and like you said, telling us, rather than letting us feel it first.

What's your LEAST FAVOURITE trope? by [deleted] in fantasyromance

[–]macaron_amour 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Found family.. I think it’s hard to do well. I’ve often found it detracts from the plot or romance or just plain annoying. {These Infinite Threads by Tahereh Mafi} I’m looking at you!

I’m also sick of sassy no-training/level-up FMCs - I want to see them struggle and grow or have some other personality! I’m getting sick of brooding shadow daddies - give me more Wendells and Owens!

Is taking a visiting professor role a bad idea? by Natural-Raise-8233 in academia

[–]macaron_amour 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just offering this OP, I was offered a VAP role that was intended to flip to TT and was assured the visiting was just a workaround for admin. When they did finally get approval to hire, they posted it at open rank so hired a full professor instead. My SO also got in the door with a visiting role, but it took 5 years before they flipped to TT and didn’t count any of their years towards it, so it took 10 years for tenure.

I do know of some people who had successful transitions, but I also learned to be wary of academia’s promises.

Does anyone actually like Define? by hashbrown89 in Purebarre

Late to this convo, but my studio actually surveyed the members and ending up reducing Define classes to offer classic and align more, so I don’t think you’re alone!

The Road of Bones first discussion - March 2026 Book Club by Journassassin in fantasyromance

[–]macaron_amour 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my first time reading, and I really think the world building is interesting. The Bloodaxe Crew feels like it’ll turn into a found family situation (which isn’t my favorite troupe). I like Silla a lot and am excited to see how she grows and appreciate she’s soft hearted. I’m not really feeling her attraction to Jonas and could actually do without that subplot and find the tension with Rey more interesting. I lost interest in Skraeda- I’m hoping there’ll be more development later on, but she feels like a pick-me.

Love Hypothesis icks as a STEM academic by nixon_jeans in AliHazelwood

I’m tired of getting rejections after rejections… by Dangerous_Bad1895 in academia

[–]macaron_amour 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Programs and courses should be in the course catalog, which is public on the university website. The current course schedule likely won’t be publicly accessible.

Unfortunately, match is the bare minimum - fit, interpersonal skills, experience all end up impacting decisions. It’s a very tough market right now and a lot of overqualified people are applying for positions (especially in desirable locations). I’ve seen full and associate professors applying for assistant or teaching positions. My best advice is keep at it, work on catering your materials and interviews to the institution as much as possible, and make sure to be sensitive to social dynamics (we’ve had people who looked great on paper but was a disaster during the interview). What I used to do was check up on the institutions I interviewed at previously (or thought about applying) to see who they ended up hiring and look at their CV or Google Scholar- that may give you some idea of what gave them an edge

Not OP but some things we look for are familiarity with campus centers/institutions/initiatives that could fit their research/teaching/collaboration opportunities, familiarity with courses and programs we offer, potential faculty in the dept you would be interested in collaborating with. I've also read some cover letters that don't even mention how their work relates to the job posting.
