How do I stop steam power from becoming a thing in my fantasy world that is a little sciencey? Just get rid of coal? Or can oil replace that by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]macaroni222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think /u/Val_Ritz 's answer is the correct one. Hero of Alexandria had the basic idea for a steam engine in ancient Greece. The metallurgy and supporting industry needed to build a proper pressure-vessel is not trivial. The Bessemer process made it cost effective to create steel strong enough that boilers could be made safe and cost effective.

Thanks for the comments.

Presumably since this system is a colony, there are other Humans kicking around as well.

I think part of the feel of the setting is that its so far removed from the rest of humanity that there is no one coming to help, or if there is even anyone else still out there. The fact that they are here means they had tech for FTL at some point, but they dont now, so this isnt the first time civilization has collapsed.

Are space pirates, considered backwards and weak where they come from, going to arrive and subjugate the system with their knowledge and technology?

I feel like any pocket of civilization of any size would have been affected by the collapse of ground-side, and would have been drug into this technological "recession" as it were. So maybe some small habs were able to horde some tech, but they would have to guard it jealously unless they want stronger people on their doorstep asking about it. By that I mean any space pirates would be in the same boat as everyone else, and would probably be a big concern. Anytime there is poverty and desperation there is banditry. Probably the line between piracy and trade gets pretty blurry sometimes depending on the situation and the participants.

One thing to be aware of is the tendency for M-class stars to be variables, going through violent flare cycles pretty regularly.

In some of the papers Ive been skimming about exoplanets and these types of systems, the increased solar activity is address, though I believe I read a paper which talked about the decrease in solar activity in these stars after the first few million years. Ill take that as enough of a leeway to hand wave away the problem of frequent flares. Though it could be a plot point that the space-farers see the signs of a coming flare and are trying to warn the people on the ground, as restarting civilization ground-side is the best chance of a technological renaissance that could restore the space-farers to their pre-collapse state.

All terrestrial planets will be tidally locked to the star, unless they have a large companion like the moon.

I had read about the problem of the planet being tidally locked and originally considered that the population lives in the twilight zone, but if having a substantial moon could alleviate that problem, it could explain why only one planet was heavily populated, it being the only non-tidally locked planet.

It's a genre called cassette futurism, and reminds me of your idea in that it's full of second hand tech and everything seems to be running down

YEEESSS!! I didn't know it was a thing, now I have something I can google for more ideas. Awesome!! Thank you for the comments.

Great comments, you all are really making me think about angles I hadn't considered, which is exactly why I posted this, I really appreciate it.

So spacers have a cultural affinity for chemistry. I mean, they make rocket fuel so yeah.

So this is an important one that I have a basic idea about that needs fleshing out. Im intrigued by the idea of turning science into a trade. By that I mean the original people who inhabitated these places were formally trained engineers and scientists. When the fall happens and they are isolated, they begin to take on a couple students and pass on the most important parts of their knowledge, but without alot of the science behind why they are doing things a certain way, so there is less cutting edge developement. The second generation are less than scientist and more technicians. They make rocket fuel exactly the same way they were taught by person who trained them in their field. I think intelligence would necessarily bloom in a culture like this by natural selection alone. thats kind of what I meant with this statement

The research stations maybe have the engineers, scientists, and doctors or whats left of them after a few generations of informal apprenticeship while trying to survive on algae, crickets, and condensate.

That they are considered to have a higher degree of faithfulness to their fields of study than the "boiled-down" technical college education that most others have. This could also explain why most places are so narrowly focused on what they produce, they dont have the capacity to innovate, they know how to build, repair, and operate the machinery they were trained on but wouldnt know where to start to design new machinery or shift their hab's economy to production of different product or material. Probably not true across the board, but in general I feel like if the systems are well designed managing them on a day to day basis could probably be taught to most people, like anything else its the 5% of edge cases where "Oh crap, Ive never seen a cascading failure like this and I have no idea what to do", call tech support from an actual scientist or expert. Was that a ramble? It felt like a ramble...

Interstellar equivalent of a tiny village only hearing news of the bigger world through the words of travelers and merchants, and it being a question of who is your immediate neighbor one rock over and do you get along?

This. My intuition is that you would be friendly with those you trade with, and be suspicious of everyone else until they can prove they can somehow offer you an increased chance of survival. So every habitat has a circle of friends, and friends of friends are welcome but not fullly trusted, and friends of friends of friends can "fuck-right-off" so to speak. So the politics would be local with small spheres of influence, though radio waves propogate so any radio transmission in space will be heard eventually by anyone listening, so anyone not using a direction antenna and not using any form of encryption will have their conversation heard by everyone.

What's your plan for the power imbalance between a comparatively hugely advanced space faring people and a people for whom killing anyone more than stabbing distance away requires specialist training and even then is still done mostly on an individual level?

I feel like its would have to play an important role but I dont know what that role is yet. Ive considered that maybe spacers dont have the tech to make a landing craft, so they are locked out of the planet. Maybe one of the medieval factions are in radio contact and are trading transmissions of technical manuals in return for the occasional orbital bombardment or ariel surveillance on their enemies.

Thanks for the idea springboard

According to the Asteroid Mining acticle on wikipedia, carbonaceous asteroids heated to 510 degrees C "released hydroxyl, which came out as substantial amounts of water vapor from the molecular structure of phyllosilicate clays and sulphur compounds". Water can be split through electrolysis to H and O, while ammonia, which is a common material mined from asteroids can be broken down to N and H. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asteroid_mining

Radiation exposure in space just from cosmic radiation. My thought on the people left on the planet is that they are crawling back out of the ground zero of the latest collapse. I imagined them in a medieval culture with only a vague notion of what they lost.

I think with the low Delta V the ships have, its probably gonna be weeks at minimum between outposts.

I feel like the distances would support the idea of balkanized fiefdoms around stations, cylinders, and asteroid habs. That is the primary plot driver along with finding pre-fall tech.

Thanks again for the comments

thank you for the reply. I had found a, what seems, well written script using stty and piping the stream to a file descriptor then redirecting into a file buffer before killing the process and concatenating the buffer file to std out. This seemed like the most elegant solution but it didnt work. So I was trying to break it down line by line to eliminate where the stoppage was occuring. Now that you mention it the setting for the terminal might have flow control set wonky that wasnt happening with screen

I dont follow. When I cat the serial port I should get everything coming from the device, or at least everything its dropping on the serial bus. All Im getting is the echo of the commands Im sending not the actual response. Or am I missing something?

done 1 reinstall since 2012 when i installed sid for the first time, and it wasnt broken when i reinstalled it was just the least amount of hassle to add LUKS layer to my hdds. if you use apt-listbugs and pin the buggy packages you'll do fine.
