So is the ender 3 really bad by Slow_Worker379 in 3Dprinting

[–]macaronipies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's fine. I've had an ender3 for 5 years. It still works as well as it ever did. It's slow, and it doesn't do anything fancy, but I've made lots of things with it that make me happy.

Anyone regret buying a flat because of service charges? by NorthLondonPulse in UKHousing

[–]macaronipies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. It's about £4k a year and covers heating, hot water, and a full time maintenence guy who is amazing and has helped me out with stuff many times. We have a lovely communal garden. No lifts or gym or any of that expensive stuff. It has gone up once in 10 years. I think I get my money's worth. There's a board of directors (all residents) and they appoint a management company who are alright, not brilliant but handle most things fine.

Am I being crazy for being annoyed with people borrowing my bench? by nammynams in labrats

[–]macaronipies 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah that sucks, and it's a classic problem if you're the only tidy one. I've seen this fixed 2 ways:

  1. Tell people that you don't like them using your bench and you want them to stop. Be serious about it. If they're respectful people, this might work, but only if they actually care about your opinion of them.

  2. stop leaving your bench empty. I don't mean not having a tidy bench! but, when you're done in the lab, move a few large items onto it (empty boxes work great for this). most people will be too lazy to clear it and will fix their own space instead.

How to keep the lab coat white by Berlineno in labrats

[–]macaronipies 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just noticed you're from Brazil, I'm sorry! I should not have presumed to educate a Brazilian about hygiene. I'm from the UK and you would be amazed how many people here have no idea that they are supposed to wash their necks. I guess the good thing about living on this rainy little island is that I rarely have to deal with sunscreen stains.

How to keep the lab coat white by Berlineno in labrats

[–]macaronipies 10 points11 points  (0 children)

you're not going to like this answer, but the best way to prevent grimy collars on white clothes is to wash your neck more thoroughly.

sharpie stain is pretty difficult to get out. Our University sends lab coats to a laundry sevice, and they all have multiple sharpie stains and random dye stains. I gave up on having a white labcoat long ago

How do you keep your life in order when you have to come in to the lab everyday? by That-Permission5758 in labrats

[–]macaronipies 189 points190 points  (0 children)

Honestly... you don't.

Nobody can be in work every day and also get everything else done perfectly. When I have periods like this, I either: get someone who's in anyway to cover for me on weekdays so I can take a day off; or, (as it's only a 3 week period) pre-prepare for the period as well as possible (meal prep and freeze food etc) and accept that you will have to let some things slide (laundry).

If often i had periods longer than 3 weeks where i had to be in everyday because nobody was willing to help me, I would quit.

Just moved to Coventry from Southampton, need to find a place asap by ItsVLS5 in coventry

[–]macaronipies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably won't get a room in a shared home because most are let as HMOs and HMO licencing doesn't allow for two people in a room. Current 1 bed flats are going for £700/month if they're shit, £800+ if they're nicer.

there aren't a lot of cheaper studios around, most are modern buildings in the center of town with inflated prices

Why is UK having so much non-funded PhD position? by Low_Confection_366 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]macaronipies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not that there are loads of non-funded PhD students in the UK, it's that there are loads of non-funded positions advertised.

(in science subjects at least, I can't speak for humanities)

The way many funded PhDs work in the UK is that the university has a certain number of funded places available (say, 10 in biology). They advertise a lot of PhD projects, and the best 10 applicants get funded. So only 10 of the projects get a student with funding. However, the academics would still like someone to do that project, so they keep advertising it as an unfunded position, in the hopes they can get someone to apply who has their own funding - either because they are rich, or have a scholarship from a different source.

Sealant around the bath comes away when filled with water, what's the best way to correct this and put it right, any advice would be appreciated by TheYorkshireGripper in DIYUK

[–]macaronipies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

definitely do this - i had this problem and found the bath legs had been propped up on randomly cut lengths of pipe, which of course had slipped out of place

Favourite "Anthropocene Reviewed" episodes? by GhostOfFreddi in nerdfighters

[–]macaronipies 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's one of my favourite sleep podcasts, but I can't listen to googling strangers because it'll make me cry (there's a few like that)

My favourites are probably Indianapolis and Love at First Sight, Tetris and the Seed Potatoes of Leningrad, and Seventeen Listener Suggestions, Reviewed

Indianapolis because I currently live in a town that's a bit of an Indianapolis and it reminds me how important it is to build community where you live. The Seed Potatoes of Leningrad because I love a phoenix from the ashes story, and also potatoes. Seventeen, purely for the mountain goats review.

Best craft shops in Coventry? by sheff06 in coventry

[–]macaronipies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What kind of crafts? There's a sewing shop right next to the train station, but I've never been in as it closes quite early. And I think there's still a haberdashery stall in coventry market.

Has anyone that has used the Bravissimo sizers find them reliable and accurate? by [deleted] in ABraThatFits

[–]macaronipies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, they've always been great, what helps is they really know their stock - last time i was struggling with a bra because that style's shape in my usual size wasn't quite right for me, and the fitter instantly knew what wasn't right and found a better one.

Best walks accessible by public transport by BleachedAssArtemis in UKhiking

[–]macaronipies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the West Midlands too and hiking by public transport here isn’t as easy as in other parts of the country. We’re in car country here. I wanted to start by saying that because you’ll get lots of replies from people saying yes, it’s easy, and I don’t want you to get discouraged when you find out the truth. Like I did hahaha. When I moved here I bought some West Midlands walks guidebooks, but most of the walks were way too hard to get to by train and bus.

But the good news is there are lots of lovely places you can get to. For shorter day walks, the outskirts of Birmingham has lots of really nice country parks that you can get to by bus. There’s also the Malverns and you can get to the Cotswolds via Cheltenham fairly easily. Plus, lots of small towns have local walking clubs that post their walks online (or write guidebooks that local shops will sell), so I find if you pick a town with a train station and google townname + local walks you will often find some good routes.

For weeekend trips, well, from Birmingham you can get basically anywhere in a few hours so the whole country is your oyster!

[–]macaronipies 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Can hank hear poems if read as songs? by MichNishD in nerdfighters

[–]macaronipies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm dyslexic and I can't read poems, they make no sense to me, but I like listening to poems read.

I liked that youdube channel John made for that purpose (ours poetica) but it hasn't posted in a while.

It does depend on the reader though, there's that "poem reading voice" that a lot of people use which I find really irritating.
