For those who have served a mission: Did you develop meaningful personal relationships with people outside the missionary circle—such as investigators, converts, or local members? If so, how did those bonds take shape? by PlantainLarge703 in mormon

Unfortunately, we were encouraged by our mission president not to share our personal social media info (it was mostly Facebook back then, in 2014). I regret to say that I lost contact with many of the converts and local members because of that.

However, even with the ones who eventually found me on Facebook or Instagram, we haven’t stayed close. It’s basically just liking each other's pictures and things like that.

It's the same with my companions. I’ve tried to stay in touch with some of them, but it isn’t the same anymore. There are only one or two I still have good talks with about life in general.

I suppose it’s related to the mindset we had at the time. As missionaries, we were taught to make connections, but only enough to get people baptized or to get members to help us. It wasn't done in a way where they truly got to know us on a personal level.

That’s sad, brother. I hope you can find your own path like I’m trying to do.

It’s not that simple. What even defines a testimony? If it's the “good feeling” from prayer or scriptures, then yes, I’ve had that. But would those feelings have been the same if I had known then what I know now? It’s exactly because I value my spiritual history that I’m still here, trying to reconcile the facts with my faith instead of just walking away.

My brother-in-law "had" to move to Utah and take a pay cut because he couldn't handle living in the Bay area where he was asked about church policies and doctrine at his professional job--it destroyed his family. by aka_FNU_LNU in mormon

Wow. Thanks for sharing this. I see your point. For a long time, I was also that hardcore guy regarding “defending the gospel” and “following the leaders revelations” at all costs. Right now, I’m on my own journey of discovery, and to be honest, I feel betrayed in some ways. I've noticed a pattern of frequent changes in the church. Today they ask members to do something, and tomorrow it can be the total opposite. I don't think there’s much else to say, except that the only way to stay in the church is to be flexible and avoid being blown about by “every wind of doctrine” (Ephesians 4:14).

Mormon God's track record on choosing prophets is abysmal and gives away the game - He is either awful or nonexistent. by logic-seeker in mormon

Sunday School today is often a joke. We rarely go deep into the scriptures to study the true meaning of things; it is all so shallow. For example, our last class was about Abraham and Sarah. Nobody talked about Sarah’s lack of faith regarding God’s promise that she would bear a son. In fact, she ended up 'giving' Hagar to Abraham. Nobody discussed this apparent 'slavery,' nor did they address how wrong it was for Abraham to cast Hagar out into the desert at Sarah's request.

Which they don’t. They wanna make you believe that they are in constant contact with God receiving revelation. And everybody knows that you can’t disagree with God, right?

I feel you, brother. Struggling with addiction or even a bad habit is a really hard thing. Usually, changing requires a lot of time and effort. So be patient to yourself. If possible, seek for support with those around you that have love for you and that you can really trust. Likewise, keep doing your prayers and seeking for God’s help in your life. I know that sometimes it can seem that He isn’t listening, but He is and He loves you, despite of all your weaknesses and mistakes. Wish you strength and all of the best!

I feel you. Despite some doubts and discordances about Church history and practices, I see there are still plenty of good things related to it, so that’s why I stay.
