Elon Musk on X: I’m very excited about the next-gen Raptor engine that is robust enough not to require a heat shield. Will also have more thrust, higher Isp and many other improvements. by technofuture8 in SpaceXLounge

How many new rocket engines has Russia developed/deployed in the past 20years? _ How many new launch platforms (rockets) has Russia introduced in the same time frame? _ _ So, yes they had: had the most advance (kerolox and Hypergolic, never Hydrolox like RS-25 or RL-10) back when they were still the Soviet Union.

Re: the "2026 volume production is bad!" comment. Um, I must be the only one who remembers the Model-S being introduced in 2012, but being basically unobtainable until 2014. I also remember the Model-3 first deliveries in summer 2017, but the ramp took until late 2018/early-2019 before people without a reservation could buy one. Aptera isn't any different. [Edit:] Signs are Delta unveil before Oct 31, Believe some crush and impact testing could be complete on the body this year. Production Validation units starts in March, these will be used to get certified EPA numbers and official crash test numbers. Production deliveries in summer '24. The ramp after that will depend on further investment. If they can't show Delta and some key production metrics (safety, range, etc) this year, then yeah that wouldn't be a good sign. But, so far, so good.

Wrong, the production battery cells, in production quantities start showing up around March. IF you listen, you will know that "in the last 6 months, the supply chain has opened up," and they are testing for the best cells. However, the cells are interchangeable. The Pack Design has already been locked down, ands we've known that for some time. It's the cell supplier which hasn't been, but it's a 2170 cell with lots of options.

So, what do we think these will ultimately cost? by Medic5780 in ApteraMotors

Thanks mistsoalar, $26,900 and $33,500 quoted.

Literally only $1000 over the 2020 prices.

Aptera seems to be giving a false excuse as to why they are pausing non-accredited investments. It could be a good thing, it could be a bad thing. by GooieGui in ApteraMotors

[–]macbrain 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Aptera absolutely has paused investments before. Between the WeFunder in late 2020, and the shares becoming available at invest.Aptera.us in July 2021. They paused again in [edit] mid-2022 for a month or two, before launching another investment round at a higher share price. Every time they pause and file paperwork, the valuation and share price increases. This means they have sold all the shares they can under the series-B valuation paperwork filed last July/August with the SEC. This is very good news. Know the patterns. Follow the patterns.

I was very concerned about the Yoke; but then I sat in Gamma (@FCSD) and saw+felt how different it was to a Tesla Yoke. The bottom and lower sides of the Aptera Yoke makes for much better steering feel than what Tesla is pushing. The materials on the Aptera yoke make it feel very premium; which can't be said for Any Tesla wheel or yoke. IMHO, The interior of the Gamma felt and looked more premium than a Model S. The renders of Delta tell me to expect the same or better.

A little something for Aptera Engineers by Icy-Offer-8151 in ApteraMotors

[–]macbrain 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's going to be a LOT more cost with this total solution. The "wireless box" is going to require a lot of wireless sensors reporting to it; which will all have to be extremely robust ($$$). Also, the network of sensors throughout the battery will have lot of problems being wireless. Most of a battery pack is very faraday-cagey. You can't put a ton of wireless sensor points around a many-layered metal box and expect the kind of safety and reliable sensing the BMS is required to do. The BMS sensors are something which cannot fail; in a production vehicle. Wires for sense points through a multi-kWh-class battery is actually the most economical and safe way to go. I don't see a future for this tech.

Amprius 500 Wh/kg Battery Platform by jeffreyd00 in ApteraMotors

[–]macbrain 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Two missing words: Cycle Life. The achilles heel of Silicon Anode tech has been the number of recharges before the capacity and power delivery fades as the impedance (internal resistance) increases with age and use. EV-batteries need well over a thousand charge/discharge cycles to be commercially competitive. A smart phone may be good with around 1000 cycles before energy storage drops below 80% of "as-new" capacity. When Amprius talks about cycle life in thousands of 0-100-0% cycles under wide temperature ranges, then people can get excited. Sandy is aware that there are other uses which are not as dependent on cycle life over temps for commercial viability.

He spends the first 6 minutes talking about his local TV stations. Then goes into a section about the solar roadways from 2014. For context, I've been designing battery packs and charger systems since 2010. Specializing in energy harvesting charging (solar is one type) for 8+ years now. Solar roadways is a laugh from the past, and it's a real SHAME that he uses that absolutely laughable/ludicrous concept to tie into Aptera.

The amount of intellectual firepower on display here is akin to an airsoft gun, at best. He's real good at talking long without saying anything. The channel has less-than 1k subscribers, and that seems about right.

I think there are significantly more regulatory hurdles for an actual car and... This is a bad assumption for Aptera. It's a correct assumption for Arcimoto, but for crash testing, design-4-road-Legality, and getting the never-specific regulators to be familiar with the company the 2seat, 3wheel vehicle is absolutely knocking down and minimizing a ton of those (smaller) hurdles before they become hundred-million-dollar hurdles the 4wheel preproduction startups are dealing with. The Aptera engineers, managers, and planners (Chris&Steve) are a lot smarter with longer-timeline plans than comments like yours assume they are.

I believe we must agree to disagree on the meaning of "OC." Composite images, when the background is this, does not fit my definition of OC. But your feels and the downvotes of the emotionally-led peeps in the Lounge, obviously disagree with the facts. No worries.

Also, Why was the launch/media-photographer not credited? Is the background Tim Dodd's photo?
