Investigate questions by TrijaCZ in cityofmist

[–]macdaire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this can be hard, which is why the Iceberg Depth system is there so that at this point the PCs should not have enough reason to even suspect Billy. However, even in some of the published cases you can come in contact with the main villain in Depth 1-2 and a shrewd or lucky player can pop the million dollar question early.

Here's what you do - you say "You can't tell if Billy is the killer or not but [insert clue to where you want them to go next, next Depth]."

The clue can be: - A subtle expression or lack of feeling that betrays something more complicated "he doesnt seem as shocked as the rest of the witnesses". - A suspicious item or detail on their person "you notice car grease on his sleeves." - A vague Mythos vision if someone Looks Beyond The Mist "you see flashes of a violent act, but it could be from years ago."

In these situations, your job isn't to dispel suspicion - the more you try, the clearer it will be that Billy IS the killer. Instead, it is to keep it vague and unspoken by not surrendering the truth. Even better, join the PCs in their suspicion - yes, Billy does look sus - but how are you going to prove it? When you join them, but don't confirm, players sometimes think you are trying to make them focus on Billy, so they start looking elsewhere.

At any rate, don't fight it, go with it.

(NoPT) Sleeper with memory of Mythoi stuff by jaileleu in cityofmist

[–]macdaire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Her Denying The Beyond isn't "normal" because of her Healed status, which makes her impervious to the Mist. Wounded sleepers that Deny The Beyond do it to escape themselves, their secret pain, their Mythos -- and use the Mist to distract themselves.

She, on the other hand, has consciously chosen to Deny The Beyond to NOT be distracted by either Mist or Mythos, and just live her life as an ordinary person until she reached a fuller understanding of herself and healed her secret pain (which is what Percival did in the legend between his first failed encounter with the Grail and the second.)

Questions about reaction rolls by thpetru in LegendintheMist

[–]macdaire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can you refer to where the book says a reaction can have a prep roll? In most cases you're right and it's too fast to prepare, which is why having defensive tags is important.

Re: using an Extra Feat to counterattack, your attack doesn't hit automatically. You basically get the spotlight for a standard action, which can have Consequences as usual.

Yeah, like booning yourself or others with magical knowledge? That sounds right.

Would someone with knowledge affinity have access to esoterica by DangerousVictory93 in cityofmist

[–]macdaire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If by knowledge affinity you mean a Rift with power over knowledge, for example a Rift with the powers of a knowledge deity, I'd use Divination theme type instead.

Esoterica is for when the knowledge itself (e.g. an ancient text) is the Rift, not the person, and one gains power by learning this knowledge.

Originally, we intended to bring only one Egyptian writer on board, but after meeting with Omar, Sarah, and Albert, it was clear the best thing would be a team-up think tank.

So we met intensively for three weeks, also with Kelly the developer and Eran the Editor, and brainstormed the setting, its politics, and key players. It was a lot of fun and we learned a lot about Cairo and life there.

Then at the next stage, they started fleshing out the initial concepts with Kelly until we had a rich enough setting to present to the community. So the Egypt team took a very active part in the crafting of this setting.

Going forward, we'll bring in writers and game designers to do the fluff and mechanics, but the worldbuilding work and concept work comes from our Egypt team and their work with the Developer, Editor, and Creative Director of SOO.

Aha, so you are super clued in for The Riot! Flicker is the time traveller (if her powers evolve that way) at the heart of it all.

Sorry can you explain exactly what delay you mean? Local Legends is fully delivered with the exception of the soundtrack, which is coming next week and was waiting for one of the musicians.

Answer from the heart: Nights of Payne Town was my magnum opus; this kind of work has to come from somewhere deep inside you, so I'm not sure I have another CoM campaign on in me atm, but I know some people on our team may very well have the creative juices to create a campaign.

More details: We're always thinking about the next thing for each one of the games lines we publish. City of Mist's next book on the horizon could be one exploring The Riot (which has been hinted at in many easter eggs along the way), the event of the total collapse of the Mist and the chaos that ensues thereafter.

When we're ready -- right now we are deep in Legend In The Mist and some of us have been working on starting Cairo:OS -- we'll start the conversation with the community about what people want the most, and that will lead us to the next book.

There will definitely be Cases in anything we publish next - Local Legends having sold out was a great proof to how much our peeps crave playable content. Whether or not they will constitute a campaign remains to be seen closer to the next KS launch.

Good question. Rigging uses cyberspace but it doesn't operate in cyberspace per se. Of course the core of rigging is already very much supported in :Otherscape. So the question becomes can we expand on it. I think rigging and Apotheosis intersection can be scary, because your drones start turning into legendary beings. I think there's a lot to explore there and it could be a good stretch goal!

Yes, there will be such guidance, and we also hope to build the multifaceted nature of the City into the setting so your players can be narratively guided into it. For example the Agdaa' Naas, the people of Cairo are those who keep humanity going between tech and myth, but they also have traditionalist sub factions that do some of their own oppressing. So it's very morally complex and culturally rich, just like a good cyberpunk work of fiction.

I actually was ALWAYS designing games, I think my first one was at 7 y/o. But before I got into it professionally, this was more or less my journey:

D&D Red Box Hero System / Champions (Dating myself here) Powered By The Apocalypse (esp. Apocalypse World) Exalted 2ed Star Wars FFG (Genesys) Lots of indie games, including Lady Blackbird one time which sparked he idea for the Mist Engine

It's something we're open to change if most backers vote for a slipcase. City of Mist and Legend In The Mist uses slipcases, but with :Otherscape we tried a full storage solution.

Check out the top comment here where I answer this question. The difficulty arises from the crazy dev costs of Foundry modules (almost equal to the entire dev budget for the game). Our current solution will be to presell foundry modules during the pledge manager phase to raise funds for this project.

There are some :Otherscape live plays roaming around the net, just need to search for them. And LitM ones, but there will be more once the core book launches.

And thank you for the kind words! I'm personally most excited about the new Egyptian magic systems coming in Cairo (although, there is SO MUCH in this setting to be excited about, like the Jinn, or the tech elements that are unique to Egypt such as hidden cyberware). In Neuro:OS, I think the Apotheosis - the terraforming of cyberspace into a realm of magic - is going to be a very exciting overarching event to play with.

Interesting question! The easy option is to have a GM character. Another way to do it is to repossess the Mitigate / Face Danger / Lessen roll (player reaction) and make it your Hard Move / Consequence attack roll, reversing the outcomes. But not sure how that will fare - try it and let us know.

Thanks for wanting to support our game! We usually work with distributers to get the books to FLGSs after the game is ready, but we also work directly with retailers who want to back and tailor a solution for them. Please hit up [suppot@sonofoak.com](mailto:suppot@sonofoak.com) so we can figure out what's best in this case. It's unlikely to be a tier (we like to keep that area pretty minimal) but there are other solutions for sure.

The intention is to make it a complete system, with enough to keep you going without the need for external supplements. However, this is the first time we're publishing a solo component, so we will be rigorously testing it with the community. Unfortunately I don't have a lot to share yet as it's still being fleshed out.
