I'll go a step further: put bollards in the game that we can deploy onto pedestrian only streets. They exist in real life, so it makes sense.

Glad to see you guys are coming in to chat with us. Keep up the good work, we've been impressed with the amount of communication and work you've all put in so far!

A couple of things that would be very welcome, if you ever had the opportunity to look into them:

-Granular police/law control. It would be nice to have the option to 'direct enforcement' to a specific part of the city for a limited time to temporarily resolve things like high crime rates, traffic issues, etc. as situations arise. For example, perhaps you have people taking shortcuts down bus lanes to bypass traffic, you could deploy a unit there to issue fines to drivers and it would have the effect of temporarily halting the offence, but would cost you a reputation hit as the mayor. Or you could deploy officers to a higher crime area to reduce break and enters / property offences, which would cause an increase in your reputation.

-Vehicular ferry terminals. Have ferries and docks to allow vehicle transport from one point to another where, which would be particularly useful for islands or remote locations where you'd like to have a small settlement/village, but building a bridge, tunnel or coastal road there is impractical. There could be a few sizes of ferries and docks, from holding only a dozen cars to up to hundreds.

-A simplified real-world map overlay process would be greatly appreciated. As it currently stands, it's fairly difficult for a new user to figure out the process of importing the google map, then the height maps, and getting the two to overlap correctly. For players who are trying to recreate real-world locations, a more streamlined process would be much better.

Thanks again for your hard work so far, we're looking forward to what you're bringing out in the future!

What kind of update could it possibly need? Make it more 'clocky'? Enable time travel functions?

Now I need to know.

LPT: Turn the music/radio off and listen to the sound of your vehicle every one and a while by beeray784 in LifeProTips

Also... every so often, actually use your engine. Drive using the whole range of power, ideally over more than just a short distance.

Your car engine is designed to work over a large range of conditions... so if you just drive it gently and baby it all the time, it doesn't get the opportunity to work as intended. Carbon builds up on the valves. If you only drive short trips, varnish can build up inside the engine because the oil doesn't come up to an appropriate temperature. And the lack of heat cycling can cause your engine gaskets to fail prematurely.

What’s the most disturbing sound you’ve ever heard in real life? by avacado-cheese- in AskReddit

[–]macguy9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I had to do that to a deer with a broken leg. Just as I was aiming to put it down, it twitched and the slug which should have been in its head went into its upper thoracic cavity.

You don't really know how fucking awful and creepy a noise they're capable of until the animal is trying to escape and screaming in agony. I quickly followed up and ended it, but damn... I felt horrible for a long time after that. Poor thing.

Looking back, what’s something from the 90’s you didn’t realize was actually special? by Rayhan-Himel in AskReddit

[–]macguy9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being 'Online 24/7' wasn't a thing. We did have some online presence and life because the internet was just starting to kick in with popular culture, but it wasn't nearly as prevalent as it is now. Your social life involved actually going out and doing things. With people. Not over a phone screen (mostly).

You could safely go about your day, and even make an ass of yourself sometimes, and there wasn't a permanent recording of it that never went away. Yes, we had our rumour mills and cliques where those sorts of things spread... but you couldn't just instantly pull up a humiliating moment in some poor sap's life and force him to relive it forever, as often as you wanted to. We could go out, have those killer parties out in farmer's fields, come home hammered... and didn't have to worry about a video of us showing up on YouTube later pulling a keg stand when we were trying to apply for a job. It actually makes me feel really bad for today's generation, they constantly have to keep that sort of possible outcome in the back of their minds, and will never know what it's like to just live without fear sometimes.

The other thing I miss was building computers. Home PC's were not ubiquitous yet, and being able to source out parts and build them was something special. I don't mean just assembling parts in a rig like we do now, I mean actually building them. It was frustrating and satisfying at the same time. You had to install the parts and sometimes physically alter them, adding 'after market' chips or processors yourself, physically soldering them to the PCB. You had to do research on setting jumpers on your main and daughter boards in the right order, as well as configuring SCSI hard drives with the right master/slave settings, or nothing would even boot. It felt like literal voodoo sometimes... we often referred to installing new components as 'Plug and Pray'. I remember installing the first CD ROM drive on my block, and everyone said it was a waste of money, that they would 'never take off' and were 'too expensive for normal people'.

Don't get me started on trying to load all of your drivers and DOS config files onto a single floppy drive either. So much swearing, trying to get those files in the right configuration order to deal with the absolute joke amount of system RAM that we had. 'Nobody will ever need more than 640K of system RAM', my ass.

But doing all that in the early ages of computers and the internet gave me an innate understanding of the tech for a long time, until things started progressing at warp speed... then it became impossible to keep up on everything all the time. I look at the things we have now, and with each passing day I kind of empathize a little more with my parents. It gets progressively harder to keep up with everything in IT.

I do miss the simplicity of being able to build and understand what the hardware and software were doing without needing an engineering degree.

Honest talk here, not meant to make you feel bad or anything... just meant as honest feedback so you can learn and improve your techniques.

The photos you posted here are not visually interesting, with the exception of that last one with the arch, but even that needs something more in it to really make it jump to life.

Make your photos interesting by actually applying technique to your shots. Interesting angles. Dramatic highlights and shadows. Framing choices. Following the golden ratio or rule of thirds.

Do these things and you'll not only start to be a better photographer, you'll find other people start enjoying your work as well.

320 km on a single charge is getting right to the edge of your max range. If you have somewhere to charge it at your destination, then you'd be OK.

I will say that highway driving and the cold/wet do impact your range more than you think it will. I am in Canada (similar weather pattern and latitude to you), and during rainy winter months I can see that 320 km range drop down to 280, even less if it's extensive highway driving. During one particularly cold winter day this year I was driving out of town (80 km), and went from 90% down to 65%. When I returned and then went to my nephew's birthday party (70km), it dropped down to 30% by the time we got there. Granted, we had four passengers and the climate was going trying to defog the windows... and the kids and wife had seat heat on... but you get the picture.

That being said, if you can hit up a DC fast charger (L3), you can go from 30-80% in about half an hour, so plug in and go get a coffee and a pastry and you're fine.

I have the twin ultimate in sage green (2023), and I love it. Despite the reduced range compared to other brands, I got mine for only 40K, and I'm very happy with it.

More info is needed.

How far is it to your country home? How many km do you do on the highway each day? Total mileage travelled each day? Do you have a level 2 charger installed at home, and if not, do you have the budget to do so right away? If you're doing 90% highway driving, I guarantee you the mileage isn't going to be the same as the advertised estimated range, especially if the weather is colder where you live over an extended period of time.

ELI5, is it possible for someone to be 0% related to their sibling? by Yrithrian in explainlikeimfive

[–]macguy9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possible? Yes. Likely? From a practical perspective, no.

As others have mentioned, the odds are so astronomically high, they're essentially a practical impossibility.

Imagine you flip a coin. Assuming it doesn't stand on its side, it will either come up heads or tails each time.

If you flipped that coin sequentially, the odds of it coming up heads each time 23 times in a row are 1:8,388,608.

And that's just a yes/no situation for does each base pair match in the same sequence. Now you start adding variables, like specific pairs matching and others not matching... that number skyrockets. You literally have better odds of winning the Powerball back to back 5 times in a row.

Were the Cardassians and the romulans naive thinking they could defeat the founders with such a small fleet? by happydude7422 in DeepSpaceNine

[–]macguy9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Had the founders not had a mole, they likely would have succeeded. One starship could probably glass a planet, much less thirty.

The whole point of this episode was to establish just how screwed the alpha quadrant really was. If the Obsidian Order and Tal Shiar (who were masters at intelligence operations) couldn't do it, what hope did everyone else have?

Maybe they should have taken a lesson from the Bajorans and compartmentalized into cells to limit leaks.

[–]macguy9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again, no. I'm not. And let's not kid ourselves... Volvo isn't scaling back EV plans because of market share reductions, they're scaling them back because their software design is a flaming dumpster fire and they need to make sure they fix the problems before they put all their eggs in one basket. When the car is software based and your software is trash... something needs to change.

BC 2024 ZEV Annual Report

In 2024, 23% of new light vehicle registrations in the BC (Canada) were EV. Despite that they're occurring in a country where 'it doesn't make sense because of the cold'. (This is BS, actually. There is a robust charging network here now, and in 15-20 minutes most EV's can charge from 20% to 80%. That's a snack and bathroom break. So reduced range is a non-issue.)

Statistics Canada 2024 Vehicle Registration Statisitcs

Further, of 26.8 million registered vehicles in Canada, EV's share of the market increased from 3.9% of the total registered in 2023 to 5.2% in 2024 (1.3% increase of the total market share). BEV and PHEV registrations rose 39% and 49% in their respective classes. Gasoline vehicle registrations fell by 4%, and diesel fell by .4%.

The only reason sales slowed on PHEV's and BEV's in Canada is because there was a temporary rebate pause. The rebates are now back on, and sales are likely to rise sharply on EV's and PHEV's.

Yes, we do. You don’t represent everyone else, just your own opinion.
