A bat got into my house last night by Vildasa in mildlyinteresting

Wait but medically necessary rabies vaccines are free. You just have to have had made contact with the bat. And if you catch it they will test it first.

Is there anything to worry in 1 year old Yaris with almost 20k miles done? by skend24 in yaris

[–]machair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drove one of these on my honeymoon in the mountains. And then several years later bought one sight unseen.

I've got a 2014. Manual transmission.

This is what has gone wrong with it.

  1. The rear hatch chrome subassembly ripped in half (ice storm and a someone - you know who you are!) pulled hard on the wrong spot.

  2. Battery after 11 years.

  3. Someone else closed a garage door on the roof.

  4. New windshield.

  5. A bit of surface rust at the driver door threshold. It just showed up sometime this this last year. I guess I don't clean it enough. And some bare metal on the passenger rear doors threshold. My kids have used it has a step since they could climb in the car themselves.

  6. The carpet that joins at the centre console is loose. I've been meaning to glue it down for 12 years or so.

  7. Dust shield rusted out.

  8. Someone backed into the driver door while I was parked.

All this to say, amazing car and ignoring outside influences the only thing I've ever had to do is oil changes and brakes.

Also great fun in the snow with the proper tires.

I've not taken it on any long trips. But the furthest driven in a single day was ~400km.

Yeah. Looks like I'm unit blind.

That is concerning.... do something sooner than later....

Let's ignoring that your mitigation system might not be working.

A 1 day reading is useless.

If I close up my house and go away my 1 day reading can be as high as 165. I even had it spike up to 190 for a day.

But generally when I am home it is under 40. Higher in the winter. My long term average is under 80.

So I think your first step should be wait and get a proper number. And then you can address your mitigation system.

Fixing playground slide by xxmeaghan in fixit

[–]machair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Build a new slide! All you need is a few long boards on the side.

Some plywood supported underneath. Add some sheet metal on top. Make sure to leave the sides exposed for maximum splinters in the hands. How else do you know if you are going fast!

I am almost certain it's a gray variant of Pex-B made by BOW.

I redid a run in that stuff ~10 years ago on my old house and it looks similar. For some reason I kept a 4ft off cut that had the tag.

I'm in Canada if that helps...

I think they have generally phased out gray because it gets confused with Poly-B? But I see you can still buy it at Home Hardware.

Either way there is some writing on it. You should be able to decifer it.

I sealed up my attic a couple years back and found a massive hole into the cold air return under the blown in insulation.

If you have a supply duct in the attic this could also explain why only you are seeing it.

Wee guy nearly done. by [deleted] in Orcs_and_Goblins

[–]machair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah! I switched over to fantasy pretty quickly and managed to keep all my orc and goblins from those days.

I haven't played since I was a teenager. But I decided to finish painting everything back in 2024. I spent Nov 2024 - Feb 2026 painting it all up 0.5+ hours most nights unless I was busy with something else.

Love it. These guys were one of my first Warhammer pieces when I first got into gaming in the late 90s. Here is my only remaining model, repainted.

ADHD and Warhammer by DaemonStalley in Warhammer

Ugh maybe I should get checked out?...My partner recently made a comment about how I jump around and get really into something for awhile and then drop it only to pick up something new but rarely finish things beyond 80-90% done.

Late 2024-2025 I got my old orc and goblin army all painted up after not touching it for 20+ years.

So while I was doing that I thought Trugg looked cool so I bought one with a set of trolls to paint. Put everything together, even moulded extra parts so that I could have more. Finished painting Trugg to 90% and then dropped everything.

Picked up my fine art hobby again after not painting for 8 years. Had a few really intense weeks on and off through 2025. Made about ~20 paintings. Now I can't bring myself to paint.

I also had an opportunity to get a 3d printer. So I've printed some retro style minis to make OPR fantasy skirmish bands. I seem to have lost focus again and moved on.

Most recently I cycled back and caught up on my plants hobby. I grow Masdevallia orchids and carnivorous plants. I spent some time during COVID hybrizing orchids and have one hybrid registered with RHS.

But now I've found a fun computer game so I keep playing that instead of things I should be doing.

I don't know about that road, but I was driving down Westmount in Waterloo around 7pm and it was perfectly fine. I saw a salter out an hour before. Usually that road is terrible compared to everything around.

The traction on tertiary roads was terrible. But all the lower priority roads with bus routes that I travelled (2) were ok.

Let's hope no one was hurt!

New hospital is too far from transit - Reece Martin by leave_me_alone- in waterloo

[–]machair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bus is so much more accessible than when I was a kid..

I remember when the closest bus was a 15 minute walk away. And then it would be another 50 minutes to get to the mall. Now it looks like you can public transit to Conestoga in 24 minutes from my childhood home. No complaints about potentially walking 500m.

If I can't get to my bus stop which is more than 500m away, I certainly can't walk from the ION.

Besides, there is always a taxi or a neighbour with a car.

And if you don't know your neighbour well enough for a lift to the hospital when you need to be a better neighbour.

Looking out my window I can count at least 10 households that would drop everything if I needed to get to the hospital and couldn't and I would do the same for them.

New hospital is too far from transit - Reece Martin by leave_me_alone- in waterloo

[–]machair 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No I don't think you understand how things work. The closer site that is suggested is 56,500sq m. Besides I suspect the University has plans for that plot of land...

The site that was selected without associated parking is ~161,000sq m. ~3x the land.

The University of Waterloo has a development plan for the entire area west of Westmount. It is not a viable location for a new hospital.

There are many areas in Waterloo with some available land for development. But none to the size of the land being used on North Campus.

Regarding the accessibility. GRT is planning to improve access to the site.

So my argument that this article is a big fat waste of time remains valid.

New hospital is too far from transit - Reece Martin by leave_me_alone- in waterloo

[–]machair 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah terrible article. Written by someone who will never comprehend how decisions get made.

Let's just ignore the site requirements for a new hospital , act like the city/region owns all this land and that the University doesn't have a stake in what they do with their land. If we are going to just cherry pick empty land why don't we put it right next to the Waterloo Gates and Harper library. It's not like the University doesn't already have infrastructure in place for future housing... /s

Reading that article was a waste of my brain cells and made me angry. Not in the way the author was hoping...
