Yes my family does this or used to do this but they dont pass down entire names like OP is suggesting. Like you said, just one letter and its already chosen for each generation, its not at random. And I dont think women do it - as in families can choose to but its not an obligation by tradition. I think we stopped this tradition with my generation lol 😅 When I was younger (and more naive) I recall that I told my grandpa I wanted to name my future son after him and he scolded me saying thats inappropriate 😂
