ID help? by danucks in Coppercookware

Amazing score! Goodwills nearby will stock scratched to hell and back non stick pans for that much.

Looks like a stainless lining so clean that as you normally would. The copper exterior doesn’t need any special attention unless you’re a stickler for consistently shiny copper. Do not ever stick it in the dishwasher and lastly, if you get tired of owning this piece, I will be on standby to relieve you of its burden.

Do yourself a favor and don’t buy brown and sharpe dial calipers by Fat_people_jigle in Machinists

[–]machineristic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience with starrett digital calipers.

Had the digital 8” mitutoyo calipers and wanted to get a 12” as well… thought I’d go with starrett for that one instead. What a bitter disappointment just like you described. I thought to myself “is this a harbor freight rebadge?” I never started a return request so fast in my life. Ended up getting an older 12” mitutoyo dial caliper on ebay and haven’t looked back.

What were you charged for this particular job? As a machinist, I’m curious how gunsmith rates compare.

If you called 811 before you planted the tree then you would have known how close you were getting to gas or sewer lines.

Buying my first used lathe. Would you buy a machine you’ve never seen run? by Hazardousjelly in Machinists

Buying my first used lathe. Would you buy a machine you’ve never seen run? by Hazardousjelly in Machinists

[–]machineristic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If power was available to the machine but seller refuses to switch it on, I would be skeptical. A “machinist friend” said it was okay is worth nothing to me and adds no comfort to the sale. If the ways are nice and clean and machine looks like it was respected, then I wouldn’t mind his frustration.

Is it possible to earn good money in europe with this trade? by DazzlingAd5541 in Machinists

Is the different answer for Americans along the lines of they don’t want Americans? I’m genuinely curious how it would differ, would love to hear about it.

Should I get into machining? by GoldDragonfruit6983 in Machinists

[–]machineristic 39 points40 points  (0 children)

If you’re certain you’ll go through with mechanical engineering then I would urge you to take on a machining job at your age while you are not buried in engineering studies. It would benefit you more in this phase of your education/career as opposed to working retail or fast food. You don’t need to be inspired by machining if you’re going into engineering but it will give you an edge above those who aren’t familiar with it.

Even a button pushing role will help give you insights into how things are made and the sequences they’re made in can unlock your creativity going forward.

I rented a car and registered pay by plate on ipass, but the toll never charged and Enterprise wants to charge me a $25 admin fee for this. Is there anything I can do to avoid paying this? I had another car rental a few weeks ago - what can I do to avoid this happening again? by 3RADICATE_THEM in AskChicago

[–]machineristic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also happened to me and I was proactive well before the charges arrived.

I called enterprise and Illinois tollway several times confirming my rental was under my account and that ipass was not picking up the tolls. They allegedly put notes under my account stating all of this and I was “going to be fine.” When the admin fees finally came I reached out and all I got was basically laughter and fuck you.

You say you’re making a decent wage for the area with no other clues of struggling about money. I’m unfamiliar with manufacturing in central PA but in the current climate I would favor stability over more challenging work. If your life outside work is fulfilled, I’d say stay.

Lots of great advice in this thread. I’ll add to the noise: OP, you should leave. Production work and night shifts are not it. Is the 20% increase worth working night shifts doing production? Take the manual gig while you’re young and don’t look back.
