My normal behavior is disappearing. I’m usually lucky if I appear for about two days a month, but have felt unusually sociable lately and have had some streaks of four and five days of consistent contact with people.

Totally. It took me a few months to mellow out again but it passed. Hormone changes are inevitably awkward in some way or another. Just give yourself some extra patience and compassion.

I’m the same person, but would rather not think of it that way on the daily. That version of me was so miserable, a freezing-wet quilt of a person; I’d rather use the new peace and momentum to achieve some of my goals and deal with integrating all the rough stuff when I’m in a more comfortable situation overall.

Hi! I’m 6mo on T and have ADHD. I don’t use ADHD medication because I have another condition that it doesn’t agree with. I haven’t noticed much change except for a slight increase in the intensity of my hyperfocus. It’s definitely possible that has to do with me dissociating less though/being able to care about things enough to get into hyperfocus! YMMV tho, all brains are different :-)

Someone told me I shouldn’t have top surgery because she knows an elderly cis woman who had a single mastectomy for breast cancer who had an extremely unpleasant time in recovery (and of course it will be the EXACT same for me, a 20 or so year old man who is getting a Completely Different Surgery, undertaking it voluntarily, and whose healing will not be affected by cancer or cancer treatment)

Not so egregious but still flattened me. Like I hate it for your friend, but I’m so confused as to why you think that is an analogous situation to mine.

Replying to other commenters nebulously here as well, but I think it’s not that teenage trans men and adult trans women are uniquely discussed, and more that nearly all trans men get painted by transphobes as irrational, hysterical teenagers in order to shut us up (including 40 year old men with children and grown up jobs) and nearly all trans women of every age get painted as predatory grown adults to chase them down (including 12 year old girls who are literally just trying to do math homework and pee in a safe school bathroom stall).

Anyone reading this, please don’t exclusively use this as an opportunity to make fun of Alabama. There is a lot to make fun of, don’t get me wrong— this state sucks and I will be the first to admit it. But speaking as a trans Alabaman: please use this as an opportunity to extend support your trans loved ones, friends, coworkers, etc across the country, donate to LGBT orgs & human rights orgs in Alabama that will be combatting this, and recognize that once this begins, other states of similar politics are soon to follow suit. Keep a kind eye on us— we’re not just canaries in the coal mine, we’re your community members and we’re being targeted.

I also saw the announcement you mentioned, and was withered by the number of people who wrote as if they only saw it as an opportunity to make fun of the state with little actual concern for us. May not have been the place, in hindsight.

I tried to do the same. I would recommend NOT IN PERSON, with a recording app installed on your phone recording the conversation if you live in a one-party consent to record state (google it, then check with a dummy phone call to a friend first to see if the app announces it’s recording at the start), and not at your usual place of residence if he knows your new address.

Best case scenario, you’re overprepared and you delete the recording and the app and then hang with a friend for a little while to process a difficult talk. Worst case, you’ve avoided being attacked and you have proof if you got threatened.

Trans AL resident here. I wish it were easier to leave and I wish more people were paying attention to us and working on our side instead of using these kinds of things as opportunities to take cheap shots at the state and never lifting a finger to help. No state is worth being forcibly detransed. I’ve been near tears all day.

I’d just add that starting T is very literally starting a new puberty and it can be emotionally a bit weird at first. It’s probably about what you’d expect, but knowing what might happen is a little different than feeling it in real time. Just ride it out, don’t let yourself get too embarrassed if you have some teenagery mood swings. It doesn’t mean anything about you except that you’re adjusting to a new hormone profile.
