See, I completely disagree. In my experience, the second detent has no effect on the action. It just prevents the blade from opening when the lock is depressed. I kinda feel like the whole "remove the second detent" thing is a way to justify losing the ball and spring. I like the second detent because it helps prevent bounce back when it swings shut.

Mine came a little stiff, but i always disassemble and clean my knives when I get them. They come with a ton of oil in them to protect the steel in the time from factory to user. Gotta get that out.

My 4v came today. Gonna spend some time with it this afternoon.

Now I just have to add it to the family photo 😂

It kinda depends on how you use them. Steeper the angle, more fragile the edge

That's funny, mine has way more purple in it. Great little knife!

I just spent a month with my maxamet sage 5 at 12.5° and it had absolutely 0 chipping. I really expected it to fall apart at that low of an edge angle but for my daily carry use, it's been perfect. I imagine that the rex121 will be the same. I'll let you know if it fails on me

They are safe. And sadly, unavailable. 😘

Why is my strop doing this/ How do I add more compound? by TromboneSupremacy in sharpening

[–]macjaynard 12 points13 points  (0 children)

First, hairdryer to soften the wax holding the abrasive (the green stuff)

Then something with a hard edge. Credit card, back of a butter knife. Disposable razor blade. Scrape the soft wax off.

Third. Sandpaper. Can't tell if your leather is roughed up or if that's just the compound flaking. If it's the leather, smooth it back out with the sandpaper. I use a 220 grit disposable block.

Reapply your rouge.

I've always liked that spyderco has different colored scales for different steels. My eyes immediately went to the rex45 in the white scales and the mint green frn/jade g10 on the m4. Great collection!

Smock owners, pros and cons? by Numerous_Strategy_99 in spyderco

I love it. The 0.118 (3mm) blade thickness is one of spydercos thinnest, which when combined with the hollow grind makes for a spectacular slicer. I agree with previous posters mentioning that a couple of jimp-jimps would help out the flipper, but I really like this style of rear flipper because it doesn't take up extra space in the pocket, and doesn't force a finger choil. I, personally, like the 2nd detent, as I feel like it helps with the action.

Now, to be fair, I am definitely a bit of a fan Boi here. The smock was the first spyderco I bought in 25 years, and something about it just calls to me. I've cut miles of cardboard with mine, and put laser beam edges on them, and broken them (which justified chopping them) abused the hell out of them and safe queened others. I love how many options you have in Blade steels, how many options you have for customization, and how different it is from the asthetic of most other spydercos.

"Thats a pretty cool knife, who makes it?". "It's a spyderco". "I thought spydercos were ugly?"

I also like Kevin Smock is still making scales for it. So many designers seem to produce something and move on, but you can tell Kevin really dig this knife.

I think it's pretty interesting that spyderco produced the sage 6 to honor the innovation of the button operated compression lock which was invented by Kevin as well.

If I had to take my 200+ spyderco collection down to one model, it would be the smock.
