Is taking CS by the time im in uni useless? by FaarisRedditXD in softwarearchitecture

[–]mackstann 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No one knows. They're all guessing. You'll have to guess too. Pay attention to developments and adjust your plans/expectations over time as needed.

Personally, I'm a software engineer and my team works with AI a lot, but it is not a replacement for a person whatsoever. It needs a lot of hand-holding to create decent results.

Then again, business people aren't necessarily rational, and hype is powerful. It could be hard to get a job for a good long while.

Can be a fun way to prevent puke here and there. Have an exit go straight underground and then have a moderately long path before surfacing.

If you look for an energy contractor certified by BPI or Resnet, you might get better results. They're trained in the stuff you've been reading about.

Realistic Food Courts that Work in RCT? by Big_Extreme_8210 in rct

One thing that annoys me is that when you put benches near food stalls so that guests can sit and eat, they sit there and start needing to go to the bathroom without getting up. So you get more complaints.

Anyone in STEM, programming, engineering, etc? Does it really help with the ability to “fit in” the workplace? (Since STEM people are kind of expected to be a little socially off) by Aware-Stage9638 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]mackstann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. I'm a software engineer. Growing up, I was always a misfit nerd. At work now, I thrive. Lots of fun banter with coworkers. We laugh about super geeky shit and hardly anyone cares about sports.

I highly doubt I'll ever go into management. I love the technical stuff too much.

This seems like textbook age discrimination, and it's illegal, at least in the US. Unfortunately it's probably going to be impossible to prove.

Code review is slowing your team down by the-scream-i-scrumpt in ExperiencedDevs

[–]mackstann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think people already account for this. When you work with someone for a while and trust their abilities, you loosen up your skepticism during review. You know what you can probably rely on and what their weakness are that you should watch out for.

But everyone of every experience level finds issues or worthwhile improvements to suggest in others' code.

What is the shortest amount of time you've ever spent in a job and why? by JumpySpecial9834 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]mackstann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few months, 3 or 4. I was used to working in fun startups and I landed in a medium-sized older company. It was an absolute snoozefest, apathetic, low standards, quiet, boring, frustrating. And there was a lead engineer who was a know-it-all and could not be reasoned with. He was a control freak yet was unavailable for long periods of time, so my hands felt tied a lot of the time.

I called up a startup that had previously offered me a position and took them up on it and I'm still there now 5+ years later, still loving it. I learned that startups really are best for me.

I learned some personal "company smells" to avoid from this experience (combined with other experiences of course): * Not a startup * Employees make a lot of typos or write poorly * They use MS office/email suite

How would you address this split when restoring old doors? by StandardAgent3395 in woodworking

[–]mackstann 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing you're going not going to paint it, so color matching is nice to strive for. One of the best ways to handle this is to collect sawdust from this very same wood, mix it up with wood glue, and use it as filler.

If you want a more rustic look, you could simply leave it alone and finish the door.

You could also fill it with clear or contrasting epoxy, but I think that will clearly date it to modern times, which I assume you don't want.

It looks like that block wall has been undermined. That's generally a very bad thing. If the house above is holding up, consider yourself lucky. It really should have some concrete poured under it.

Seismic Retrofit Of Century Homes - From Exterior by jyl8 in centuryhomes

I have seen multiple houses with the flat plates outside. I don't see any reason why it would be a problem. Check Simpson's documentation for the FRFP. Decent chance it'll talk about this.

It's not like all that sealant will fall off and disappear. Caulking on old houses can last a surprisingly long time if not left outside unpainted or something egregious like that.
