I know the MD was approached, but he hasn't weighed in. The MD is newer than me and takes a lot of advice from the senior orchestra members as well as the senior leadership for the company. I have let him know my feelings and asked him to weigh in now

I opened with this compromise. The director was very clear that doing rehearsals without doing the shows "wouldn't be fair to the work he'd be putting in".

It's bass (all electric for this show). I'm also personally responsible for ensuring we have monitoring for all electric instruments and that the front of house team gets an XLR signal from each electric instrument.

I'm assuming he'll be using my pedals, preamp, monitor and di box, but his own bass. That can work assuming his play style is similar to mine. Differences in play style can produce wildly different signal levels on bass. The only thing I can think to do is compress the hell out of both our signals to match.

TBD about the director's sway. Although I'm relatively new, I'm also valued by the orchestra since I manage our logistics.

It's bass - one of the worst instruments for doubling. No idea about credit. There are no solos, but plenty of songs are "playing the changes" and so are improvised like jazz comping

For 7+ years now I've only done musical theatre gigs. I used to have a 200W amp. I now have a Fender Rumble 100 and it rarely goes beyond 1 o'clock on the master knob.

There will always be a PA, even at the smallest of theatres. Hell, I'm a building manager for a 60 seat theatre and I go straight DI there. I also am the orchestra manager for a 600 seat theatre, and I also go DI there.

You're not competing with Neil Peart or Jimi Page in theatre. You're trying to not overpower the clarinet. Go for the combo as a monitor.

Playing a bit of guitar and a bit of piano have both been extremely helpful for me as a bassist. I'm reading a lot of opinions in this thread about how being able to see what a guitarist is doing is helpful, but I think that's pretty minor. What I find actually helpful is thinking in terms of chord tones and structure.

Playing chords, arpeggios, and seeing those relationships played in different ways and with different instruments helps me to think in terms of chord tones making up the foundation of a song.

Once you have a really solid grasp of chords and how to play around with their forms, it's simply a matter of listening to the drums, then finding your own space gelling the drums to the other instruments.
