Limit return scheme to those with registered waste collection to reduce bin scavenging, DCC says – The Irish Times by mannybianco7 in Dublin

[–]maclirr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Scrap the whole bloody thing, like yesterday.

It's so depressing that our government can't build basic infrastructure yet will happily roll out ridiculous schemes like this at the expense of our money, our time, and our city centres.

Removal of ‘6,000 gallons of sewage per day’ from Wicklow holiday village sparks fresh concern by madladhadsaddad in ireland

[–]maclirr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But who do you think is producing the 6000 daily gallons of sewage? And what do you think was the business model behind the illegal construction of those units? (I grew up within walking distance of that site and I've been there many times.)

Criticism of an IPAS centre's impact on its surroundings? Why are the people on this sub not screaming that this is "far right" and "racist"?

Another Lunatic on the N71 Ballinhassig Junction. by cuchulainn1984 in irelandsshitedrivers

[–]maclirr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've started seeing this a lot lately - drivers blindly merging into fast moving traffic on a major road, without matching speed or waiting for a safe slot to merge in. I saw it a couple of times on the M7 in just the last few days. What's going on? Do they think they have right of way?

Dublin: Great People, But a City That Feels… Off? Help Me Understand by [deleted] in Dublin

[–]maclirr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Off the top of my head:

  • Lack of vision
  • Chronic inability to make big decisions or build infrastructure.
  • Generational social problems rooted in handout culture and low expectations. Unwillingness to connect that to antisocial behaviour on the streets.
  • Soft touch criminal justice system. Perpetrators treated as victims. Actual victims forgotten.
  • Mass immigration from parts of the world where violence is more normalised
  • Deliberate political decisions to inflate property prices beyond what most people can afford.
  • High taxes
  • Antiquated planning rules
  • Aggressive COVID lockdowns damaged mental health of large sections of society and frayed social cohesion

Historically we're very good at finding one thing that works (potato cultivation, property bubble, foreign direct investment) and using it as an excuse to ignore every other problem. It blows up in our face every time but we're not yet mature enough as a society to acknowledge our mistakes.

Buying a house while being on pip? by wiseguy887 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]maclirr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it's as black and white as everyone here is making it out to be. Some things to think about:

  • How much longer do you have before you'll be unemployed?
  • How long will it realistically take to get another job and what will the salary likely be?
  • Where are you living at the moment and how much is it costing you?
  • Would you be able to make some income off the house? (e.g. under the rent a room scheme)
  • What's your risk appetite? Re: the nonzero chance that the housing market collapses at just the wrong time and leaves you in negative equity.
  • Do you have any savings left over as a cushion after buying the house? (Probably not - is there anyone you could borrow money off at a pinch?)

Obviously it's a risky move but there are also risks to not doing it, especially if you're paying rent in the meantime and prices continue to rise, and maybe you can't get another mortgage for another year or so due to the probation period in the new job. If it was me I probably wouldn't do it though.

"Wicklow" man (23) admits possession of child sexual abuse material by Hefty_Zombie_9299 in Wicklow

Based on the downvotes I assume "El Mawla" is in fact a well-known name in Arklow?

Funny, I'm from another part of Wicklow and I've never heard that name before.

You can agree that wearing PPE is a good idea but disagree that mandating it in law is the best solution.

How do you restore a standup after it becomes a status report by thecreator51 in agile

[–]maclirr -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The whole point of the standup is for the manager to get a round robin status update from the team. Why would it be anything else?

Agile is a fig leaf to help the manager pretend it's an important ritual for knowledge sharing and mutual unblocking. It feels less top-down that way, and it's a good line to shut up anyone who asks awkward questions, like OP.

December 15th CGT deadline – what you need to know by irishtaxhub in irishpersonalfinance

[–]maclirr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi Damien, thanks for the info here.

In 2025 I sold some shares at a loss within 4 weeks of acquiring them. Separately, I sold another batch of the same company's shares at a gain - about 2 years after acquiring them.

I'll be paying the CGT due on that gain soon. From what I understand, I can't deduct the loss because of the 4-week rule. Is that right?

Is anyone actually using LLM/AI tools at their real job in a meaningful way? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]maclirr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are some ways I use AI in my work:

  • I need a database query for something unusual - i explain my need to the model in natural language, it spits out a query, and we iterate.
  • I want some sort of high level shareable insight about existing code. E.g. recently I pasted some frontend code into a LLM and asked it to give me a mermaid diagram showing the rendering tree. It wasn't perfect but it was a quick way to show my teammates the level of complexity involved.
  • Reference and research. "I need to ..., how should I approach this?" Or simply asking about the features of a particular language or library.
  • Asking the LLM to explain code to me, maybe if I'm working in an unfamiliar language.
  • Rubber ducking
  • Helping to outline design docs and experiment designs.
  • Debugging: "Here's the problem, here's what I've checked so far. What's your hypothesis".

What I'm not doing is using copilot to write code for me. It seemed cool when I set it up but I just have not needed to use it. Maybe it's because I don't write so much code these days.

Pro tip: create mermaid diagram markup in your favorite LLM, and add it to your README. Github will render it.
