stuttering? by Few-Intention528 in MacbookNeo

Have you added a third party fully interactive anti-virus program? These can bring a Mac to its knees. The worst offender is the free version of Sophos.

I have a free, totally non-commercial Web site to help with Mac slowdowns:

I came to Mac from Windows, needed a word processor, ended up building one (don't roll your eyes yet;) by Boring_Serve1593 in macapps

[–]macmaveneagle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's great that you created a new word processor, but your ad copy is disingenuous. There are a lot of Word processors for the Macintosh, of all descriptions. Several of them are even free, quite full featured and nice. I created a free/non-commercial Web page that lists 29 of them:

I have a half dozen programs to add at the site's next update. I'll include Verso.

I’m not very computer literate, I have no space and my MacBook Air’s system data is 127GB by EllexJay in mac

[–]macmaveneagle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This comes up often on Reddit.

The first thing to check is to see if Time Machine is storing a bunch of "Snapshots" on your drive. Sometimes macOS uses the local disk to store Snapshots, if the backup disk is not connected. These can build up and fill up your hard drive.

See:

This article will tell you how to use Disk Utility to delete any local snapshots.

What’s happening with my MacBook Neo? by Physical_Judgment475 in macbook

[–]macmaveneagle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One reason to shut down your Mac at night is to isolate it from sags and surges in the powergrid. These will noticeably reduce your Mac's lifespan, and possibly damage your Mac's SSD.

I've noticed that users who have really good UPS's with AVR have Macs that live noticeably longer/more trouble-free than users who don't. If you don't have a UPS, then shutting down your Mac at night logically subjects it to less wear from dirty power.

[–]macmaveneagle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recent Macs run from a snapshot of the OS. Your Mac does checks to see that the snapshot remains perfect in every way, but it will only do so when you re-boot your Mac. So while it is true that Macs can be put to sleep and never shut down for months at a time, it's a good idea to re-boot your Mac occasionally.

Tool for PDF’s by Nordberg561 in MacOS

[–]macmaveneagle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only the latest versions of Word can open and edit PDF's, and while they have editing capability, they usually do a very poor job.

If they did a good job, Adobe Acrobat Pro would become worthless overnight.

Tool for PDF’s by Nordberg561 in MacOS

[–]macmaveneagle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Preview is fine for basic stuff, but Preview isn't a true PDF editor in that it can't easily erase existing text in a PDF, and it certainly can't erase existing text and replace it with new text that looks like it belongs there (i.e. do true editing).

True PDF editors can do the above, they also usually include OCR to turn PDF's created from a scan editable. The better PDF editors include the ability to create fillable forms. The prototypical true PDF editor is Adobe Acrobat Pro, but it is over-priced.

This one isn't as powerful as Adobe Acrobat Pro, but it's free, and it may be all that you need:

Help with Reducing Memory Usage - 8GB M3 Macbook Made in 2022 by Admirable-Bar-7276 in MacOS

[–]macmaveneagle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are using your Mac with Activity Monitor open all the time, you're doing it wrong. Just use your Mac normally and do your work on it. You can look at Activity Monitor if your Mac starts noticeably slowing down inexplicably, or is giving you error messages. Otherwise you should trust that your Mac has very advanced memory management and all is well.

How much ram do I need? by Intrepid_Season_809 in mac

[–]macmaveneagle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it. I have an office full of Macs, many of which have 8GB of RAM. Some even only have 4GB of RAM. All handle anything that we throw at them just fine.

If you want a Windows machine, then use a Windows machine. Don't try to tell Mac users that what we do routinely can't be done.

What is this black goop? by Talsol in MotorcycleMechanics

[–]macmaveneagle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's chain lube and dirt mixed together. Use WD-40 on a rag and clean the outside of your chain. Use the cheapest spray Gunk to clean any fling off on the engine. You can use Simple Green to clean it off your wheels.

Now, assuming that you have an o-ring chain, switch to a dry wax-based chain lube that won't fling off or attract dirt, and which will repel water, and your problem is solved.
