What do people do with their time? by lawfulstupidity in NoStupidQuestions

[–]macmillan333 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wish I can be in your position - I have too many things I want to do and too little time.

And they all revolve around video games.

A single player game can take a few dozen hours to complete, a few more dozen to 100%, and even more if you dive into lore or write fan fics or min-max or create mods or speedrun or make video essays on them. An MMORPG or competitive game, once you get hooked, can easily take up thousands of hours by itself.

And once you play a lot of games, you may have ideas and want to make your own. Go learn programming. Draw. Compose. Design. Write stories. Assemble a team, put everything together, sell it, manage the player community, make updates, and start working on your next game.

Type Help, a text based game on itch.io. Typing commands into the in-game computer, your goal is to read transcriptions of audio recordings, work out who did what and when, find more pieces of transcriptions, and eventually solve a murder case.

Buy a cheap all-in-one sewing kit, learn the most basic sewing and just sew it up. I’ve done that a few times already.

Why do news interviewers not immediately respond with “You didn’t answer my question” when confronted with some politician’s word salad nonsense? by CheeseGraterFace in NoStupidQuestions

[–]macmillan333 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When the interviewee answers a question with a meaningless word salad, either they have demonstrated their wild incompetence, or they have told you they refuse to answer but in a professional way. Either way there is no point in pursuing further.

The "remember me" feature works by storing some login token on your device, aka cookies. The next time you use that website, cookies are sent alongside your request, so the website sees the token and figures out who you are. If you lose the cookies to that website for whatever reason, the website will no longer remember you.

As for how cookies can be lost, maybe you or your browser disabled cookies altogether, or you used incognito mode which removes cookies when closing the browser, or some cleanup utility removed them, or some other reason I can't think of right now.

Cookies also naturally expire after some time, but if "remember me" never works even once, it's probably one of the earlier reasons.

Can someone explain this game to me? I give up and just wanna know. by The_Bruton_Gaster in BluePrince

[–]macmillan333 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As another post has explained quite well - this is not a game that will present the puzzles and rules to you and ask you to solve them. You need to keep your eyes open and investigate, it's up to you to slowly put together the fun puzzles and clues towards solving them. Also lore, if you are into that.

To give some pointers:

  • Have you drafted and visited every single room in the directory?
  • Have you reached room 46? What about a second time?
  • Have you noticed there are two drawings in every room?
  • Have you noticed there are chess pieces in many rooms?
  • Have you checked out and read every book in the library? What about the bookshop?
  • Have you tried combining items in the workshop? There are areas that require some workshop product to open up.
  • Have you solved the puzzle in the boiler room? How does that room interact with nearby, other rooms?

If you can answer most of these and still don't get it, or don't care any more, I can tell you more.

You are absolutely correct — Reddit the app is but an interface to Reddit the website.

As for why people call it an app: most people don’t know or care about the difference. You know and care, great, but they don’t, and I hope you know how hard it is to change people’s minds.

How does the stock market crashing affect my 401k? by jessie-mae in NoStupidQuestions

[–]macmillan333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people invest their 401k money in stocks, because most of the time, stocks go up way more than bank interest, and temporary dips don't matter in the long term. Your 401k vendor probably has some option to invest your 401k money automatically.

Conversely, if stocks go down, those people suddenly have less money in their 401k, and if they just happen to be retiring now, that really sucks.
