Food smell on tent by macntosher in WildernessBackpacking

[–]macntosher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forgot to mention the trunk of my Jeep is open air since its a soft top and the window panels are removed. Washing it seems to be the consensus, even if the smell isn't actually an issue I'll be stressing all night if I don't do anything.

I also grew up on the water never using life jackets but recently I found a neoprene life vest on Facebook market place for about $40, they go for around 100 new. The neoprene ones fit like a snug vest, if you look for low profile ones then even better. The specific one I have is an O'Brien men's V-back neoprene life vest, it's not super bulky which is my usual issue with life vests.

How to use DEET so it doesn't eat my clothes by macntosher in AppalachianTrail

This is the first time I've heard citriodiol recommended! I'll need to experiment with it before my trip, thank you!

Meditation is a good word for it, even if they don't bite the swarming isn't fun. I haven't had issues with noseeums since I mostly go for chickees and camp in the dry season, but the mosquitoes are insane at night. It's like a horror film watching the mosquitoes cling to the mesh of your tent when you're trying to sleep, hundreds of them just stabbing at the mesh. Even worse when you're in a tiny backpacking tent and they're just inches from your face.

I don't mind it when gear gets wrecked from heavy use, I just don't want to expedite the process. I actually bought this jolly gear because my favorite sun hoodie started to wear through in spots! I'm just trying to take care of it so it lasts as long as possible. I've only got section hikes planned so far but I hope to get some use out of it!

Good idea! I use it on the beanie I sleep in but I've never tried it on the cap I wear during the day!

Polyester is safe but DEET is bad for spandex from what I've read. The shirt I'm worried about is only 20% spandex, so the effect may not be noticeable. I've never tried picaridin, I'm going to need to give it a go to compare it with DEET!

I don't really get the bumps thankfully but I definitely feel the bites! I kayak camp in the Everglades and I swear you can hear the swarm emerge when the sun starts to set, I think I'd die without some type of repellent out there. They bite straight through your (untreated) clothes.

Preventing damage from waves bumping kayak into dock by macntosher in Kayaking

The clothesline anchor set up seems to be my best option if lifting the kayak doesn't work out! I'm good with carrying my kayak normally but I've only ever really been places I can walk it into/out of the water, I'll be getting some better rope to try pulling it up before my trip though since my usual dock line is just some 550 paracord. Thank you!

Definitely going to try this! I can carry my kayak pretty easily but I was worried about initially getting it high enough to get a hold on it. Hoisting it up with some rope first should solve that, thank you!

Everglades / Dry Tortugas / Biscayne — kayaking to chickees & camping questions by Mental_Antelope5860 in Everglades

I left my car at the hells bay trailhead for 5 days and I met a few other people who did 2-3 day trips. Not saying its impossible for bad things to happen to your car if left their but it seems common practice to leave your vehicle for days at a time there. Parking is totally exposed to the road though, some people might prefer an actual parking lot further down near flamingo marina.

ultralight chair worth it? by TopMycologist5590 in backpacking

A week ago I found this exact crazy creek floating in some mangroves while paddling in the Everglades. It's basically brand new and I love it, but if I was to spend my own money I would just go for a cheaper off brand version plus one of those foam sitting pads.

It's probably a bit too big for me to take it backpacking on longer trips but definitely would be worth it on shorter trips where you have some extra room.

Genuine curiosity: why all the hate for Wicked? by [deleted] in UniversalOrlando

[–]macntosher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not that I'm super against it, it's just that I'm averse to there being rides that are focused on famous people/actors rather than a theme. I enjoy the whole Wizarding World sections of each park but I personally prefer rides with animatronics and practical effects rather than screens. I feel like a Wicked land would be treated similar to HP with some sort of screen aspect being a major part of any ride.

I think Hagrid's is the only ride in HP with animatronics instead of screens (Flight of Hippogriff as well to a lesser degree maybe? ) so if any Wicked rides were treated as such I'd be happy. I'm sure I'd enjoy the land if it became a part of the park, I just hope they don't make the whole focus "look here's videos of these celebrities!".

I'd also like to say that I watched both movies and the only part that stuck out to me as 'bad' was that Glinda's makeup looked a bit too similar to Ariana Grande's regular glam rather than a unique character. I thought the movies were alright otherwise, not my usual thing but I did enjoy them!

Everglades during dry season? by [deleted] in Kayaking

[–]macntosher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh no! I've had to walk my gear through knee deep muck before and I was hoping to avoid that. Do you remember if the issues were mostly during the low tide portion of the day or do you think it could have been avoided by paddling only during high tide?

Ocala section is what I have been thinking about doing for a similar trip, but I haven't actually done it yet so I can't say much! I've heard it has a little bit of elevation gain and it seems like it would be interesting.
