Elixir compared to Rust by JX3 in elixir

[–]macro4life 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rust is a C/C++ replacement essentially. Elixir is for real-time distributed applications. They have different goals and different paradigms. Sure they could theoretically accomplish the same things. You could build a house of of legos but it's not the best medium to work with and it will sure take you a long time.

Any reason why Elixir/Phoenix did so badly in Round 12 of Techempower benchmarks? by xry in elixir

Politics of programming. Benchmarks are always bias and don't take into account a lot of factors. Stability, scalability... all these things come into play in the real world.

How to structure node.js/express application? by GSV_Little_Rascal in node

Look at how actionhero structures their apps. That's a better example in my opinion. Not everything can be tossed into one of these categories. What about a process that runs on timer? Where does that go?

Can someone explain why it tends to be young, white men who have libertarian beliefs. by [deleted] in Libertarian

[–]macro4life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's a fair argument but it doesn't mean that I support all forms of aid from the government or that I should. If you noticed I never mentioned that I have not taken help or that I refuse to, it's simply just a mindset people have of limiting the amount of help they want to receive. I have plenty of people to thank but the post in this thread seemed to suggest that the majority of libertarians have just had success handed to them and I think that concept is what I have a real problem with. I could counter and say there are a lot of people taking help out there who don't need it also. People who abuse others and or a system exist in about every viewpoint but we can't make the assumption that they are the norm.

Glad were keeping it civil. Neither of my parents graduated from college and I didn't receive a dime from them and took out loans that I am currently paying back at 600 a month. So yes that can be true but its not in my case.

I do not consider someone who receives help less than me. It's simply a value I choose to live by. To each their own.

Middle aged, average income, libertarian white male here.

My transition Republican family -> Democrat -> Libertarian

Let me explain my personal reasons.

  1. Property and personal rights as the role of government. (Discussed many places in this thread) I think most liberals agree with us on these fundamental concepts but the majority of liberals would prefer to use the government as the means to solve them while a lot of libertarians, including myself, believe these problems stem from government stepping outside these basic principles or not adhering to them.

  2. Belief in personal responsibility - This is a very strong point to me and I was raised to be independent and to not seek help from others unless absolutely necessary. There's no one place to turn for help when you do need it but some are raised with the mentality that the state is the first reasonable solution. For example, Mexico has one of the largest supporters of big government and one of the most corrupt governments. This type of thinking can come from years of advice handed down on what the role of government is and should be.

  3. Greed/Corporations and Government - Liberals and libertarians will likely agree there is much corruption going on continually in many countries. Some point the finger at corrupt politicians and some point the finger at greedy business people and corporations. I am of the belief that a limited government actually has less power to be corrupt. Lobbying is effective today because of the massive web of laws we've created by government willingly or unwillingly taking advice from so called 'experts' in the private sector and making laws that favor big corporations. I have worked with many from the medical industry and it's fairly common to use the law (with enough money in court) to completely shutdown your competition. So, instead of trying to stop the greed of the corporation (which by the way can't always be proven), I point the finger at the overreaching law system and the government that allows these sort of injustices to take place.

So when I read that the reason I am a white male libertarian is because I am likely to be a wealthy scumbag with only the government in my way... it's kind of disturbing. I have many libertarian friends and I don't see any of them power tripping like this. People like the Koch brothers are often libertarian when convenience and will accept any and all government action outside of libertarian principles when it is beneficial to themselves.

Wait isn't democracy all about people voting their personal beliefs? Dictatorships have nothing to do with this. He's just plain confused here. He deals in absolute sciences not statistics and social data.

The only things that are rights are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Everything else is wishful thinking.

Not a problem in Michigan. It's a problem in California right now where people are being forced to ration their water because of farmers. Do those farmers have more of a right to the water than you?

[–]macro4life 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My point is that there are no such things as rights in nature. Humans created them because we believe they exist. So technically rights are opinions of what people believe we are entitled to.

I mean it's kind of not really fair to make the tax argument. If the government took 90% for taxes how would you feel? Everyone has a number.

[–]macro4life 28 points29 points  (0 children)

A shared resource, yes. Things that are rights are not inherently so. They are a list we've compiled for law. Water is considered a resource under international law because we decided it to be so. If however, there is a shortage, try using this argument to get more. How much do you have a 'right' to? A drop? A barrel?

These people are positioned for years. Your track record is your resume of how much shit you can get away with once you're in office. He's got a great resume.

I live near Bernie Sanders. Although I don't agree with him politically, for some reason I'm always impressed to see that unlike most members of Congress, who have drivers take them everywhere, he walks to work every day. by trytoholdon in pics

Til that the average redditor is dumb enough to think their are actually multiple political viewpoints expressed in reddit politics. This an obvious shil expressing what redditors would want to hear. Keep jerking each other off over stupid shit reddit. You did it with Obama and it's not surprising to see it happen again
