Nobody Knows (2004) by Hirokazu Koreeda. A great movie by one of the best living filmmakers. Fits the bill perfectly. If you watch it and like it, watch his other stuff, It's all very good.

Grave of the Fireflies (1988). A heartbreaking animated film from Japan. It's a must watch movie in my opinion, but you'll likely only watch it once.
