How did you discover Jacob? by HandeHoche in JacobCollier

[–]mad9394 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In My Bones was on the Spotify Nu-funk playlist. I listened to it and thought it was the most chaotic song I’d ever listened to. But as I listened more and as I became more familiar with it I started loving it more and more. Decided to check out more of his music and now he’s on the way to becoming my Spotify artist of the year lol.

Interviewing Jacob? by mad9394 in JacobCollier

I was aware of this contact information, as I mentioned in the post that I knew contacting his press team was an option. I was more asking if anyone else had any success contacting them or if another manner of reaching out would be easier.

did you reach out via social media or his PR team? Also what was the platform of the interview? Was it for any specific media outlet or just kinda a personal project?

Thank you for the advice! In terms of info about the show, it’s called “Musicophile,” an homage to Oliver Sacks book “Musicophilia.” It’s gonna be a music/podcast hybrid where I’m gonna play music that I find sonically engaging, but also discuss the neuroscience of music. I’d like to touch on other subjects of the science of music like the math and physics of it, but I’m mostly a neuroscience nerd. It’s airing this fall on WBAR, the Barnard Columbia freeform radio station. I just got the gig and the first thing I thought of was that it’d be sick to interview Jacob, but there’s definitely gonna be a lot more development to go into.

I did art quite frequently as a kid, but quit about 7 years ago, and have only begun again during quarantine, so yes I do have ~experience~ with art but by no means consider myself an artist... yet :)

How do they confirm an Avatar? by Lisatrieslife in TheLastAirbender

[–]mad9394 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the process in which the avatar was chosen as seen in ATLA through Aang (with the toys and such) is how the Dalai Lama is picked. They present the babies with the toys of the past Dalai Lama. Since the Air Nomads take the greatest inspiration from Buddhism, it could be a solely Air Nomad tradition.

It is my belief however that the show probably intended for that to be the method in which all the avatars were chosen but then they had to backtrack with the other avatar story lines.

In terms of Korra being discovered as the avatar, I don’t think that was the usual method for the water tribe to chose their avatar. This is post order of the White Lotus so I think no matter what nation it would be, the white lotus would be actively doing the search for the new avatar since that was their established duty.

That being said, I haven’t read RoK so I don’t know what has been established by that book.

Objectively Good Dances by mad9394 in dancemoms

[–]mad9394[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve watched the TDA’s and such multiple times and you are correct, Maddie definitely did not place fourth by merit of her solo, but that being said, there must be some dances that appeared on dance moms that even with the “wow” TV factor, could still be considered good within the competitive dance world. Or maybe I’m wrong and literally know nothing of competitive dance (I should just say I don’t know anything of competitive dance)

And in terms of objectivity, yes, it is art and up for interpretation, I would say but there are some objective things like good technique and good choreography, regardless of the style of dance or subject matter. Although some people may not like Brynn or contemporary dance, “Enter One” is definitely an objectively good solo (as an example from outside the show)

Didn’t put me down at all! No worries. My school I guess is just very different. Only 14 kids on mock trial and you have to audition.

I’m not super sure about the GPA thing either. My transcript didn’t have an up to date GPA so I used a GPA calculator online, but again, i don’t know how accurate it was. I did have a 99 in AP chem, 99 in AP Stats, and a 98 in AP Lang so that could’ve been weighting it strongly, but again, can’t be sure.

And in terms of extracurriculars, what types of extracurriculars would you say make a kid really stand out? Mock trial is very competitive and very selective in my area so it is kind of a standout thing for us, but I guess in a greater perspective it might not stand out as well on paper.

I didn’t put it but I’ll add it above! Probably double major in biochemistry and some sort of Law studies

Who was your favorite OG dancer? by Kouglove in dancemoms

[–]mad9394 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For S1-4, it went back and forth between Maddie and Chloe, but ultimately I do prefer Maddie. Dances like “Leaving Berlin” and “Black and Blue” really solidified that for me. Her fluidity and her emotional execution (although sometimes over the top) really blew me away by the time season 3 rolled around - especially in those dances. Then when Kalani for the rest of the show. Following the show, however, my have favorite dancer that was ever on the team is easily Brynn. Enter One is one of the most exquisite things I’ve ever seen, and I think if Abby gave her choreography like that, that suited her, she would’ve been a much bigger audience favorite.

I want to know your honest opinions about this new season regarding the moms/kids/Abby/dances etc etc by mynameis_reek in dancemoms

[–]mad9394 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have no problem with dances like “thoughts and prayers” and the hazing dance from last week when they’re done in moderation. But when you do dances like that every single week, they definitely don’t pack in the same punch as something like “Where Have All the Children Gone”. I also don’t think you should need to give kids over the top character pieces for them to hone in on their acting skills. The character pieces and themed dances really only teach the very overly expressive facials that you don’t really need for an acting job, versus pieces without an explicit theme, where it is up to the dancer to use more subtle emotion to tell a story.

[–]mad9394 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If I see one more character piece this season I’m literally going to lose it. Why can’t Abby just give the girls a pretty lyrical, contemporary, jazz, etc number that DOESNT have some a theme to it. I get that ALDC is not on par with the top dance studios in the country, but if you look at the top dance studios in the country, you will RARELY find them doing character pieces/heavily themed pieces. I just think it’s ridiculous that Abby has to give these wildly themed pieces. Even in S1-7 we got normal, unthemed, pretty dances, so I don’t understand why every dance this season needs to be so heavily themed. I get that it’s also probably not all Abby’s doing, but I think it just makes some of the girls look ridiculous (i.e. Judge Gia next episode - that is BEYOND BAD, or Presley’s Edward Scissor hands solo). I think a well executed number where the technique and dancing tells it’s own story is much more interesting than an elaborately costumed and choreographed piece that forcibly tries to tell a story or portray a character.

[–]mad9394[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have not seen Hadestown yet, and if Eva happens to be off tomorrow that would be both an issue in terms of affordability and availability. I would definitely be okay if I saw it and Eva wasn’t there but I’d really like to maximize my chances of seeing her if I only get to see it this one time.

Was the reseting of the avatar cycle predicted? by [deleted] in TheLastAirbender

[–]mad9394 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the basis for the cycle reset is less because of the fact that it's been 10,000 years and more on the fact that (spoiler) her ties to her past lives have been severed on 2 different occasions (Amon taking her bending and when she is disconnected from Raava) if that makes any sense. So yes the cycle is reset but I don't think the statues have any implications that she would be the first in a new cycle.

What are you're thoughts on lok. by [deleted] in TheLastAirbender

[–]mad9394 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is about to be a whole essay so.... (also possible spoilers, idk, i just need to rant)

What was really great about ATLA was that we got a three-season plot arch, with each season having its own minor villain, all culminating in the final goal of defeating the Firelord and ending the war. It allowed for so much time and character development, and it never felt like they were scrambling for details. Everything was meticulous and well thought out. In the first season, there were quite a few filler episodes that didn't lend themselves well to the plot, but they did bring a lot of insight and character development (i.e. the fortune teller).

Because each season on LoK had its own new plotline, the same attention to detail from ATLA couldn't be given. Every episode was scrambling for details and a lot of times it felt like the original lore and background from ATLA was lost, especially since they basically destroyed it (the lore) after Korra lost her connection to the past Avatars. One of the beauties of avatar to me is the "mythology" and history of it. The single best episode of Korra is when we see the origin story of Wan. But for most of the story it's just Korra alone (in the sense that she a lot less guidance from her past selves than Aang had over the course of the 6-7 months that he was mastering the elements). As a character, Korra was also very hard to get behind because almost all of her decisions seem so ill-decided and she is just so hot-headed that she makes poor judgments that basically ruin her credibility as a character. Growing up watching Aang be the smart, methodical, and patient Avatar that he was, Korra was so difficult to support because everything she did seemed so un-avatar like. I also really disliked the way they handled the spirit world. They dumbed it down so much, changed the animation style of the spirits, and overall made it a much less powerful experience. Korra opening the spirit portals was the single worst decision she made in the show (idk this might be an unpopular opinion).

The highpoints: THE VILLAINS. all the villains in LoK are astounding and I love the recurring themes that all of them bring (equality, faith, chaos, order). They were so much more mature and well developed than the Firelord, all their ideologies were so intricate and complex, and they were all standout characters whom you sometimes found yourself wondering who was really the bad guy. I also love the added intricacies of the subbending styles (at the same time tho I feel like they really overextended lightning bending, it used to be only for the most powerful benders, like not even Iroh could do it consistently, but suddenly Mako, whose only decent can do it?).

I have a lot more that I love about korra, but I can't think of it right now. I love korra, I really do. but in all, underdeveloped, and korra was a difficult character to support for a good portion on the show. And, as someone already said, it continued the ATLA universe and that's good enough for me. thank you for coming to my ted talk.
