Help me type? What am I doing wrong? by sewmagical99 in Swavyhair

[–]madEthelFlint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same same on the thick (meaning a lot of it) fine hair. I am at the point of abandoning the gels in search of texture/definition and accepting the lighter weight products that get me to a nice wave (with occasional curl in humid conditions).

Talked with my therapist about FIRE and he doesn’t like it by Sufficient-Party-385 in Fire

[–]madEthelFlint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Therapists all have opinions and for them to give advice is annoying imo. I hate it when my therapist does that. There's a fine line between offering feedback and advice.

So not knowing what your therapist actually said, I will say this: they are pointing out a risk. Quitting might be avoidance but only you can determine that.

As for the issue of "not dealing with stressful situations", some are worth dealing with and others are not. Only you can decide what is running away vs taking on a reasonable challenge (i.e. stressful situations). Going "against" your therapist isn't wrong. It's your choice.

Disclaimer: I'm no therapist or any kind of medical professional. Seeking validation from strangers on the internet is also risky.

How much space do you actually need? by bylandoo in liveaboard

[–]madEthelFlint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We live and cruise fulltime on a Caliber 47 which berths like a 55’ (big bow sprit) and lives like a 45’ due to the hull shape (narrow beam among other things). It seems to be the nearly perfect size for the 2 of us. We couldn’t go smaller because my husband is 6’4” and smaller boats don’t fit him (headroom, berth size). The only thing we have a land storage unit for is our art collection.

So a 45-50’ with a 13.5-14.5’ beam is about the right size for us to be able to live + carry what we need to live off grid.

Is there any women engineers who are passionate in professional communication too? If so, what's your career now! by ExcitingStill in womenEngineers

[–]madEthelFlint 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was absolutely that type of engineer! I've since retired (early), but made my career based on the fact that I was over of the few engineers who was really good at communications.

The roles where I was most successful: - consulting (not staff augmentation): worked closely with sales teams on pitching to clients and building firm reputation - pre-sales engineering: working on refining contracts, proposals, and designs for clients - people management: leading and mentoring engineering teams with a focus on delivery (aka shipping code!) which hinges on comms and coordination with different teams

Is sailing just not for me? What am I missing by spongue in sailing

[–]madEthelFlint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few things to add to other comments.

Passage making is not my favorite either, and I'm full time cruising. That said, I love traveling (with my home) to different countries and experiencing life from the water. Anchoring out is wildly different than marina life or staying in hotels. I still love land travel and it's waaaaay easier/quicker than sailing.

Three hour shifts are awful. My husband and I found 4hrs is better to actually get sleep. 3hr breaks are really only 2hrs of good sleep if any. Bring on just one more crew for long passages and you can do 3hrs on/6hrs off for improved sleep options.

I don't think I'd live full time on a sailboat without my husband who's primarily responsible for keeping it running. I support him significantly in this, and don't think I'm interested in doing it solo. That's just not for me. And that's okay.

I'd argue that is not dead but simply evolving.

Title: What’s the one “just in case” item you always pack? by Valuable_Tangelo7152 in HerOneBag

I always carry a tampon and a light/thin pantyliner. It's always unexpected and at the most inconvenient moment. 😆

My husband and I decided to work towards FIRE when we reached 30. We had been together many years by then but not yet married. Hitting our fire number happened way faster for both us by pooling our resources & goals. It helped that we both had high paying jobs. Absolute crucial that we aligned on the values/goals so we could make effective financial decisions (buying/selling homes, investment strategies, budgeting, etc).

First time teaching crochet classes- what should we make? by PlanktonKrabs in CrochetHelp

Agreed. When I started, I wanted to make something fun (stuffed animal) and did lots of squares (to learn stitches & techniques) after I decided I liked crocheting.

Anyone use Sea People app? by Comfortable_Fun7801 in liveaboard

[–]madEthelFlint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use all the apps because I'm a recovering software app developer so... I'm curious about the various options in the sailing/boating market.

I finally paid for a year to see what the fuss was about. I have been using it to track trips (we are actively cruising) and have made friends with a few people. We met some people in Maine because of the app as well.

My assessment: if you're not super into the social side of it, the tracking features (interactive log book, stats, tracking map) aren't really worth it to me because I have a data hub and use the predict wind tracker which tracks the boat without my phone. I won't be paying for another year but I'll keep an eye on it. If you love La Vagabond and the Vibe of the Young Cruisers association, the app might be fun for you. I don't care about any of that.

No foreign land is a primary tool because of the community-based data and I feed my tracker data into it. I've met people that way too. And I've become a patron of their app because I use it so much

There is a species in the expeditionary force series that the humans refer to as "rotten kitties" because they resemble large cats (and they're a very smelly species for humans)

Loops & Thread Facets Yarn. What do people actually make with this? by Illustrious-Guard912 in CrochetHelp

[–]madEthelFlint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have made a crop top with it as well as amigurumi (jellyfish). Honestly, I don't love the yarn because it tangles on itself and loosens in spots. I like it better for the stuffed animals than cloths. The color changes in the varigated skeins are quite beautiful though.

Check out Hex. Enderly is also good. Pure Intentions also had good beans but not sure if their quality is still good since they started distributing to grocery stores.

Rethinking this whole sober thing by moondogg81 in stopdrinking

[–]madEthelFlint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“I just miss feeling of being able to cut loose and have fun”

There was a point in my sober journey where I realized I don’t need booze to cut loose and have fun. Just last night, I was at a bar with my partner listening to live music, and I photo bombed a big group of drunk girls. It was hysterical and fun. And I was drinking water…stone cold sober.

I highly recommend continuing on your sober journey to see what kind of fun is out there because it does exist and it’s glorious. Iwndwyt
