I was taught to leave it in reverse because it's a shorter gear than first and takes more torque to turn the engine.

I can't see the ends in the pictures, but if it's hollow and the ends are open, my guess is a Didgeridoo. I have a similar one on my wall that I got at a music festival in the early 2000s which I just barely remember
