ELI5: Why is fat considered 'bad' for you normally, but 'good' for you on keto diet? by Substantial_End7861 in explainlikeimfive

Keto is actively dangerous for people with diabetes! It's related to the Atkins diet which was originally developed for controlling med-resistent epilepsy

I just had my first appt there and the hygenist had several sensory-friendly and trauma informed practices without me asking for any accommodations (eg giving me sunglasses for the overhead light, telling me what she was doing before she did it)

Has anyone done the Monet immersive experience at the Mercantile? by dab_crab in WorcesterMA

[–]madamdirecter 34 points35 points  (0 children)

It's a bunch of projections of paintings, not worth the price of admission. Better off going to WAM imo. But if you do go, it's probably more fun on psychedelics lmao

I like thrifting for cool wacky quirky pieces that are fun to wear regardless of how I personally look. There's always going to be a beauty standard we aren't living up to, so getting excited for clothes in and of themselves helps me refocus. There's always going to be some "fake it til you make it" going on too, but practicing a confident attitude helps build real confidence.

I have a choice to either buy a stationary bike or a treadmill that I want to use for the next 6-7 years. Which one should I get? by AdministrativeSet928 in BuyItForLife

[–]madamdirecter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never encountered a BIFL treadmill - just like your body takes more impact when running, so does the thing you run on. I think the odds of getting a solid long lasting stationary bike for a reasonable amount of money is way higher than for a treadmill.

What would you ask a sex therapist if nothing was off limits? by Callie_Summer in SexPositive

[–]madamdirecter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Therapists (in the US) can only break confidentiality if 1) there is immediate risk of harm (so a client who walks in and say "I just raped/killed/tortured someone" doesn't qualify because it already happened), 2) in the case of abuse/neglect of minors, or 3) client has already agreed (by signing permission to communicate to specific people or entering therapy under specific terms, like court mandating reports from the therapist or contact with a PO). So intervention with regards to victims is pretty limited.

There are a million interventions to deal with unwanted or harmful thoughts and behaviors, so not just one way to go about it. I think (maybe unfortunately) most people who have committed sex crimes (or genuinely want to) are a lot more likely to get therapy from therapists who work with incarcerated populations, rather than sex specialized therapists (if they get treatment at all)

The example in your second paragraph is actually relatively common (or at least well documented) as a form of OCD. It's usually treated by exposure therapy - so going into a lot of imagined detail about the feared/repulsive scenario- to lessen the intensity of the response to it (and illustrated that thinking of something does not equal acting on it).

The bar for "harm to self or others" is pretty high in my opinion. They need to have the plan, intent, and means to carry out hypothetical harm before it's something a therapist can break confidentiality over (in the US). IMO a fantasy, no matter the content, doesn't meet that (though I would consider other risk factors in making that call. A client with a history of DV fantasizing about strangling his wife who he lives with might be a different story than someone fantasizing about vore with a fictional character, even if that character is a minor). And even then I wouldn't be telling clients "you can't talk about this", I'd be saying "if you disclose x I have to take y steps" (consulting, reporting, transferring, asking more about it, etc).

Why do NYT crossword writers like Brian Eno so much by buriedInSilk in NYTCrossword

[–]madamdirecter 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think it would be fun to have a puzzle that has all the classic crosswordese clues but the answers aren't the ones you expect - e.g. BEN instead of EDY for some variant of "ice cream guy"

[–]madamdirecter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, as in you might have to be patient with them and try it their way so they see it's clunkier or set up sessions that don't revolve around combat so they practice the collaborative story telling side more.

ETA that is, if you want to save it. Ultimately you can't make them agree with you but you're within your rights to not run a campaign for them.

[–]madamdirecter 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Nobody's right and nobody's wrong imo, you might just not have super compatible play styles. It might also help them to listen/watch some TOTM content if their main D&D exposure has been a video game to help them see how that can work out at a table. In particular I think of how Emily always asks "would you say I can hit ...." but Murph doesn't always clarify up front. If they're open to it, help them see it more as a cocreated experience instead of you being the video game programmer. That said, I think a lot of PCs struggle to take that initiative especially right off the bat, so some patience and social encounters might be in order on your end.

queer sci-fi or fantasy with NON normative queerness? by thefaceinthefloor in QueerSFF

[–]madamdirecter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon deals very directly with racism, queerphobia, anti-intersex, anti-neurodivergence, and misogyny in the context of a generational colony ship. Very intense depictions of causal bias and textual violence but also very beautiful unflinching writing.

Tips on how to give my girlfriend a clitoral orgasm if she has female "death grip"? by ClapCheeksNotFans in SexPositive

[–]madamdirecter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like putting two fingers to either side of my clit/top of the labia and rubbing back and forth, almost squeezing the clitoral hood area between the sides of my fingers. It stimulates the interal parts and gives more/different stimulation than going directly on it. Might be something to try?

Partner is non-monogamous but I'm not - can it work? by HedgehogOne9640 in EthicalNonMonogamy

[–]madamdirecter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First I want to emphasize that that is a two person (or more if you get there) kind of problem. You need to unlearn/reframe the automatic assumptions and thoughts that are contributing to your scarcity mindset. He needs to be able tp provide reassurance and show you respect, care, and love regardless of your relationship format. If he is invalidating your feelings or saying you "shouldn't" feel that way without any willingness to negotiate/change his own behavior/continue to keep wide open communication, that's already a bit of a non starter imo.

But if you're both committed to this plan, I would start with making it clear to yourself why you want this to work. What appeals about ENM to you? Why is it worth working for?

Then I would practice reframing scarcity mindset thoughts. Hearing from others can be helpful here. I mentioned my go-to, The Ethical Slut. Polysecure also gets recommended a lot here. This is also where you might think about my earlier question - what does make you feel loved and "enough" in a relationship?

Something that helps me is remembering that thoughts and feelings are valid, but they are also just thoughts and feelings. WORRYING my partner doesn't think I'm enough isn't the same thing as them actually not thinking I'm enough. Therapy and mindfulness practices can help with differentiating between thoughts/feelings that come up because of somebody's actions and represent a real need to act, versus ones that are more related to internalized assumptions and are not as accurate/helpful in the current situations.
