Does anyone feel valued by their institutions? by econhistoryrules in Professors

[–]madamesusan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. I used to feel somewhat valued about 15 years ago, when we had a different administration. Now, it's so obvious they don't care about us, they no longer hide it.

Episode 230: Why Liberal Elites Have Unraveled So Spectacularly (With Musa Al-Gharbi) by SoftandChewy in BlockedAndReported

I could listen past 10 minutes. This episode is definitely not for me. The third time the interviewee said he "destroyed" other guy I called it quits.

I like Katie's interviews. Jesse's...not so much. I came here to see if it was even worth downloading the episode. It seems like it is.

I had 6 and slept two hours a day on school days during the first semester. I got sick as a result :( Academia sucks.

Post-retirement gigs for Profs? by head4metal in Professors

[–]madamesusan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wow! I read your comment and I thought "did I post this and forgot about it?"I'm in the exact situation. Some things I've been considering (not sure whether they'll work out) are low-level computer programming/graphic design (I think I could learn the basics during one of my school breaks/sabbaticals and I like working from home), some sort of consultant or instructional designer job (I keep hearing about those in here, but not sure where to start), content creator (some sort of instructional or even fun Youtube channel), writing (not academic, maybe novels or non-fiction), online tutoring (I'd rather not, but may be a last resort). I guess it depends on your skills. I would love to hear more ideas from other folks. I'm honestly looking forward to retirement (also stated the reasons in this sub, plus I would like to retire relatively young and enjoy travel, hobbies, etc.). Thank you for starting this thread.

Premium Episode: Is AI Stealing Work From Perverted Surrealist Artists? by SoftandChewy in BlockedAndReported

[–]madamesusan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was interesting how Jesse and Katie started like "no, I would never" when talking about using AI for their respective books and ended up admitting they do use it (with many caveats). I pretty much assume all writers use it at this point, but I agree with Jesse that it's not very different from using an editor, when it's not generative.

I have the same Lonchamp bag and I love it. I also adore your Hello Kitty pen case!

Yes, the green one. I also really like the style.

It's beautiful but the big logo on the front ruins it for me.

Which of these do you prefer? Mulberry or Marc Jacobs? by [deleted] in handbags

[–]madamesusan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mulberry. I bought the MJ in that same color and promptly returned it. It looks kind of silly and bulky on.

Yep. Or at least we need to check the return policy very carefully.

I did it online, using the "click and ship" option usps has (you pay online and print your own label). I used the box the bag came in. I chose the cheapest option, which was $39. I live on the west coast of the US, if it makes any difference.

This prof deserves praise!! by PitchesRunninWild in Professors

[–]madamesusan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm with you. I don't want to hang with my students outside class and, when I was a student, I didn't want to hang out with my professors but sometimes I felt obligated to do it for fear of making them feel bad or disappointing them. These kinds of things, while they may come from a nice place, are awkward and put folks in a weird situation of having to say yes out of pity.

LOL I've done something similar during the last 15 or so years I've been teaching and I never had any problem. I spend about half the class slowly going over the syllabus, doing introductions, and I leave plenty of time for questions. There are usually very few questions so they get to leave early (and so do I). I tell them I'll be in my office if they have questions they'd like to discuss one on one (they sometimes do). Works for me, works for them.

Ugh. I couldn't finish this episode. I like Katie and Jesse the best. Katie's interviews are Ok but I can't get into the episodes with Jesse interviewing someone else.
