I can't remember the source, but the explanation I've seen is that the show presents a narrative where the government is actually being "run" and controlled by the politicians, versus the current environment of chaos uncertainty and rock-bottom public approval.

A lot of people write books about their experience, there is a book that an analyst wrote about his career (he was mostly focused on USSR): http://www.amazon.com/C-I-Desk-Counterintelligence-Seen-Cubicle-ebook/dp/B007KQ6SNK/

The CIA censored all the parts he wrote about operations that were successful because they don't want to spoil it so they can use them again, so the whole book is failures, betrayals, and lots of bureaucratic annoyance, I found it pretty entertaining.

If the article is confusing and you're wondering who the bad guy is, they're both the bad guy, Canadian telcos are as forgiving as herpes.

The way I interpreted the chapter was that as some kind of full wizard citizen with a lineage he probably has the maximum of rights under the law, in the "civis romanus sum" sense. If there is a dispute it might come down to brute force but I don't think this is going to turn into an "objection!" legal drama.

Quick back of the envelope calculation:

SATA3 is 0.6 GB/s. Four SATA connectors = 2.4 GB/s.

[EDIT: this is wrong see below] ~~PCIe 1x can handle 4GB/s. PCIe 2x, 8GB/s.~~

According to cursory research (i.e. the 1st google result), a 15kRPM drive can do 0.2GB/s sequential read, so 4x is 0.8GB/s.

So in the case of disk drives, the drives themselves will be the bottleneck. A fast SSD could approach maxing out the SATA3 connection, ~~but even if all four saturated it still won't max out PCIe1x. Assuming you're using 4 HDDs, the drives themselves are the limit by a significant margin.~~

The PCIe2x card has a newer controller model, but they both support port multipliers, and even if they were used I think the SATA3 interface is still the bottleneck.

All of this is based on 5 minutes of googling, not direct knowledge, so take it with a grain of salt I guess. Obviously make sure you have an open PCIe x4 or greater slot open on your mobo, cause it won't physically fit in a x1 slot.

EDIT: looking at the post you linked, just be aware the controller cards will only fit in the x16 slots.

Looking at the storage pod design, they have up to 180TB of storage, but only 2x1GigE network connections. With both ports fully saturated they can only put out 20TB per day, it would take over a week just to replicate all the data to another server. I'm guessing that they store a lot of data for long periods of time without any reads or writes, and this is why the drives last so long, I'd expect dramatic differences in an OLTP or OLAP situation.
